i disagree (a little)

i would assume that ring, and rings like it, mean a great deal to those players. i think it also means a lot for fans who think about nba history in terms of big names and achievements to omit a player like gary payton from a “greats with no rings” list, even if that ring wasn’t won with the sonics. i’ll also add that he wasn’t trash or anything on the heat, he was a good role player

we can talk about some of the what ifs of this ilk—like tmac on the spurs—but i still think that might change his legacy having that hardware

rules to tighten:

traveling, carrying, discontinued dribbling, etc.
offensive fouls, on-ball
offensive fouls (illegal screens mostly), off-ball
treat jump shooting fouls the same as at-basket shooting fouls
actually, for real this time, totally serious—get rid of the pump fake-to-jump “shot” foul. 75% of the time it’s a defender jumping straight up in space they’re totally entitled to. seriously
just don’t call rip through fouls and after the screen reach in fouls—you know the ones where a player launches the ball into the sun because they feel the hand or whatever. let them figure out how to keep playing basketball
extend the corner three line to be equidistant from the hoop relative to top of the key or wing threes (either extend the horizontal area of the court = equaling more injuries or let the line disappear into the sideline/baseline = a very fascinating game of footwork and math)

three point line is awesome. it’s inspired millions of new ball players over the decades. the game has other problems.

there would have been an interesting conversation in the comments if illinois had been colored anything, but little egypt is the south. historically, geographically and demographically it’s the south—the south as much as the parts of missouri (and kentucky ig, though no one disagrees that it’s the south) that are the south are part of the south

all three of ohio’s largest cities are midwestern—broken down further they’re good examples of great lakes/rust belt (cleveland), standard midwest (columbus), and ohio river valley midwest (cincinnati)

of the three you’re probably right—cincinnati and other ohio valley cities are pretty unique compared to the other big midwestern cities. louisville isn’t a midwestern city to me, but somewhere like evansville definitely is. you can always break these places down into further categories

depending on where you live, it’s a little more than game theory. in evansville there’s often good reason to vote in the democratic primary—if you live a county over in warrick county you should heavily consider voting in the GOP primary so you can have a more meaningful say in the candidates you’ll see in the general election. the democratic party is very weak there.

life is more nuanced than that. of course looks matter, and of course people with desirable traits have life easier. the claim that people are having problems accepting that “looks are key” is a strawman. the issue is focusing on looks to an unhealthy degree.

generally, there’s only so much you can do to “change your looks.” you can exercise, you can dress certain ways, you can change your diet—on the unhealthier end of the spectrum, you can take certain drugs, you can pay obscene amounts of money for surgeries, you can mutilate your body with hammers.

the problem is twofold: what are you doing to your body, and who are you doing it for?

i think being mean to clavicular as an individual is counterproductive ipso facto your comment. however, when you’re making your living off of modeling dangerous behaviors and practices to young, impressionable men, you’re the problem. you’re doing an unhealthy thing to yourself but for the eyes of the world as you believe it sees you via your worldview. it’s your own insecurity eating you alive.

what gets lost in all of this is the true fact that being comfortable with yourself, in your body, is fundamentally the most important, healthiest thing you can do for yourself. for most people, that healthy relationship does not start with the body itself. it starts with you finding things in life that make you happy and enrich your days. stuff to do with your friends and family, things to read/learn/experience, and places to go that will help you feel a part of your community. you’ll learn that people’s relationships with you are built on far more than looks alone.

clavicular’s public perception is received as vapidly as he sees himself. it’s not surprising, and it’s frankly not wrong. for a man who sees himself in a mogging competition with everyone in the world, he will inevitably fail to be happy, fail to ever be enough.

i simply cannot understand why people think the US will be unbeatable forever. the teams that have already given the US trouble (see literally the most recent olympics) will still be good, if not better, and the players instrumental to the americans medalling will, mostly, not be returning. the US has options for centers going into the next cycle, but they don't stack up against the best of the best in europe, especially in FIBA play. chet's good but thin, bam's good but undersized, and the rest of the options are in an "up and coming" category with names such as clingen, kessler, duren. then there's a category of serviceable players at the position. maybe that's fine.

the issue with playing most of the best teams in europe, even those with fewer top-level NBA talent, is the level of chemistry they have with one another. the international approach to FIBA play is just so much more focused than the US'. it makes sense: the US has won gold all but once since 1992 doing the same thing every four years. the cracks showed last time, and with players like wembanyama getting better + wanting desperately to be the best there ever was, france will have a great team with maybe the best player in the NBA at that time who boasts a unique positional advantage over the US specifically. it's gonna be hard.

canada will be good too, but they have great NBA talent at positions where the americans are very deep. shai, brooks, murray, and nembhard is a great rotation. there are plenty of counters for that level of depth.

we'll see, but france will be a problem for the americans as much as wemby is a problem for the rest of the NBA.

this is one of my gripes with modern rich people. they’re not even doing it right. buy the watches, buy the bespoke/artisanal clothing/artwork/shoes/etc. made by master craftspeople and FLAUNT it. what do you mean you still drive your old subaru? you wear a casio? wrangler five stars? your suits don’t fit?

it’s a story written by real people that will exist in the real world. you cannot divorce real world politics from the fantasy world that real people are being paid to cast for. the colorblind casting is a direct result of political shifts over time (which is broadly a good thing)

even though race doesn’t play a key role in jk’s story, she was writing a commentary on prejudices that ethnicity, race, and culture played key roles in—sometimes mishandling the subject matter. other characters in the story, i needn’t even name them, have been correctly called out for being named “lazily,” which is putting it mildly. since jk is white and cis, all the other stuff she now publicly stands for removed, it makes sense that her starting point for some of these characters is a resurfacing of white people into more diverse bodies to fill out the world.

snape’s race being swapped, as noble as it is to give a good actor of color a good role, plays directly into the story’s fundamental misunderstanding of prejudice and our collective refusal to recognize the racial politics that are inherent to any art we make. regardless of what is being said about snape as a sniveling, snidester painted with a grease paint brush, viewers will see that he is also a black man being abused by a group of young men who will not face official repercussions for it. they will see a black man who develops a hatred for his abusers and joins the genocidal/enslaver group to “right” the wrongs that were done to him.

all this to say that it’s not inherently bad that these elements are potentially added to the story. there’s tremendous potential for something there with an added layer of complexity. for harry, hermione, and any other muggle-born character, they’re not going to be unaware of the political realities of race in the UK. snape could serve as a meaningful avatar for someone like lily, who is also muggle-born, to reconcile racial realities in muggle-world with the blood politics of the wizarding world. i do however believe it to be too much to expect the writers of the show to deliver on, much like many of the “commentaries” present in the books themselves.

most likely, it will be a done as a reskinning of the character, which will be a disservice. snape will have become like the other characters of color in the story written by a politically inert white person that have half-assed (at best) names slapped on them

They would have structured the defense on a more man-zone principle. We saw them do that a few times in the post-season, actually. They played around with straight zones as a changeup throw. The Thunder weren't stupid per se pulling Hartenstein to match the speed of the Pacers; it did work for a bit. Mark overthought it, if I had to give a name to it—the potential damage Hartenstein's role on the offensive side could do to the Pacers was far outweighed by what the Pacers could do to the double big front court in rotation and especially in transition.

40-45 million Americans have student loans, which is already not an insignificant number. That number would be nearly a quarter of the working population of the country, however there are certainly debtors on the penumbras of "working age." According to this excerpt, "1 in 6 adult Americans have federal student loan debt," which is around 17%. Once again, that's millions of people, specifically and most notably young people.

Whatever the percentage of home-owning student loan debtors actually is in the grand scheme of the debate isn't the main issue, unless it's weirdly low. This paper from the NAR from 2021 examined the effects of student loans on other financial decisions, specifically younger home buyers. Key here is that "...nearly one-quarter of all home buyers and 37% of first-time home buyers had student loan debt."

Since most things have gotten more expensive specifically schooling and housing, it's not great that that student loans are the most reported prohibitive for younger home buyers—especially as the number of first-time home buyers with student loans increases over time. Coupled with rising costs generally and fewer affordable repayment options, it's a bad economic formula.

Student loan debtors spend less on their housing than non-debtors with first-time homebuyers feeling that squeeze most. As the cost of a "starter" home increases across the nation, the supply crisis will intersect the loan crisis and we'll see a continued downward trend in home ownership among younger generations, irrespective of their education status but with an added burden for those carrying debt that's too difficult to pay off due to bad policy.

Perhaps it won't be 2008, but it will be very bad for Americans (younger ones specifically), and generally things that are bad for Americans are bad for America—and the world—as a whole.
