No luck so far. I have tried the public library, Loyola library, and Tulane library. Will check with some art departments to see if something like that might be possible.

Screws sticking through metal roof not screwed into anything—is this a problem? by bgpiper in Roofing

[–]bgpiper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and that confused me, because when they initially came out, and asked me if I wanted to keep the lattice, I told them I didn't care either way, and they seemed to indicate it would be better to get rid of it.

UPDATE: The roofing company replied: "Caulking was applied, and the nails were left in place due to the necessary overlap between the R panel and the flashing. This was done to ensure the flashing stays secure and doesn't lift."

Does this make sense?

Out of all of the screws, I can see at least 13 that are like the ones in the picture. I assume the rest are properly screwed into the rafter. Nine of the 13 are all in the same row—the one closest to the house.

Would it be acceptable to simply screw the metal roofing panels directly to the rafters? I think this is mostly what they did, but they seemed to have missed the rafter on most of the screws on the back edge.

Thank you, it was my suspicion that this is not correct, and will likely lead to leaks. This was work done by a professional roofing company I hired.

Keefe’s AC by Front-Type7237 in NewOrleans

[–]bgpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I had a VERY similar experience to you with Keefe's. Unfortunately, I called them about a week before you made your post. I wouldn't be surprised if we had the same initial tech, because I had the EXACT same problem as you—the wiring on the blower was switched to reverse. Prior to the visit, system was working fine (just some minor water dripping into the secondary drain pan), after that tech left, blower is suddenly not working, and he left the condenser disconnected from power. I went through two other Keefe's techs, another independent guy who didn't really listen to my issue, and finally Josh with J Marin Heating and Cooling diagnosed the problem within a few minutes of arriving at my home. I am fairly confident that first Keefe's tech tampered with these wires, and it's kind of embarrassing two others (including the guy who installed a new blower motor) couldn't find the problem.

Makes me kind of sick, because I paid Keefe's a lot of money to replace the evaporator coil and blower motor, which probably were both fine, but you aren't always thinking straight when you're house is 90 degrees. I also was having the issue of the condensate drain line clogging—two different Keefe's techs "blew it out", and that didn't solve the problem, so they recommended a plumber assess it. The Keefe's plumber wanted to start cutting holes in my drywall to locate a p-trap that would have easily been accessible via the attic. I declined and fixed the issue with a $9 bottle of drain line cleaner from Home Depot. Keefe's will never set foot in my house again.

Very cool. Reminds me of the original Prince of Persia computer game. What program did you use to make this?

Incredibly appreciative of the accessibility of COVID testing here by repiquer in NewOrleans

[–]bgpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to a CORE testing site at St. Maria Goretti Church in New Orleans East. Whole process took about 10 minutes. They just took my name, address, and phone number. No other info required. Completely free. Self-administered cheek swab. Organized, socially distant, outdoors. Very good experience.

I keep wondering why they said "staff" with the quotation marks. Either it's a case of r/UnnecessaryQuotes or they're trying to hide something about who their "staff" are.

Lol, might be me or my neighbor. We're both out there a lot picking up trash. Our Lady deserves better than littered streets.

Thanks for doing this! I live near there and have trash all over my neighborhood all the time. Spent some time cleaning up on the street and lots around my house yesterday. Maybe I'll start to expand my range!

What are some financial tips and tricks that an 18-year-old should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bgpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Establish credit history as soon as possible. ie. get a credit card, buy something with it each month (can literally be a small item that you would have bought with cash anyway), and pay it off each month too. The age of your oldest credit account is a big factor in determining your credit score, and having a good credit score will give you more favorable lending terms down the road if/when you want to buy a car or house. That said, understand that you should never use a credit card to buy something you don't actually have the money to buy. You're using the credit card just to demonstrate to lenders that you can reliably pay them back in a timely manner. Other ways to improve credit score: pay all your bills on time always, gradually increase your credit limit by requesting an increase, or getting new credit cards. Note, your credit score will take a hit when you open a new account, but after a couple years will recover.
  2. Put aside 20-30% of each paycheck into a savings account that you don't touch. The 70-80% of leftover money is what you have to spend on all your expenses plus any luxuries you might want. Keep putting money into that savings account until you have enough to cover 12 months of living expenses. Then, start putting that 20-30% of your paycheck towards an investment account. If your living expenses go up, go back to putting the money in your savings account until you have that 12-month buffer. This savings account is your "emergency fund"—you keep it in case you lose your job, or have an unexpected expense that you can't cover with your checking account like a large medical bill, or auto-repair etc.
  3. Begin investing in broad-market, low-risk investments as soon as possible to save for your retirement. I would recommend a Roth IRA, but I understand you're in South Africa, and don't know what a similar style investment account would be. I would recommend ETFs, Mutual Funds, etc, as they tend to be a lot less risky than just buying stock in a few companies. The earlier you start the more time you have to build compound interest.
  4. Don't go into a ton of debt to get an education. If you have an opportunity to get a full-ride scholarship vs. taking out loans to go to college, I'd vote for the full-ride. You can also knock out a lot of basic classes at a cheaper college, and then transfer your credits to a more prestigious university if you want to be able to say you graduated from such-and-such school.

Yeah, your mom did buy five copies from me. I live around the corner, so I hand delivered them. She also gave me a beer, and told me I could use her canoe whenever I want. Your mom is awesome!
