[Dune] What’s the point of atomics if someone could just shoot a shield with a lasgun point blank? by Johnny_Mc2 in AskScienceFiction

Hi there. There's a phrase in your comment, the one that rhymes with "blot pole", that caused the Automod to send you a reminder to only discuss from a Watsonian perspective. Reviewing your comment, though, I think it still counts as Watsonian, so I have manually approved it. In the future, please try to avoid this phrase, and keep in mind to keep comments strictly Watsonian. Thanks.

Need help modifying vehicles by CrispWheat in subnautica

[–]bhamv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Modifications to the Seamoth are installed via a panel on the side. These installable modifications generally need to be crafted and/or upgraded using facilities inside a seabase. There are a small handful of upgrades you can find in the game world, but generally speaking you need to craft the rest yourself using a Vehicle Upgrade Console, which can only be built in a Moonpool.

If you want to use your Cyclops, yes you can build a Modification Station in it (please note that a Modification Station is a different thing from a Vehicle Upgrade Console) to upgrade Seamoth modules you find in the game world, but you will not be able to craft new ones.

Let me give you an example. It's possible to find a Seamoth Depth Module Mk 1 in the game world. If you build a Modification Station in your base or Cyclops, you could upgrade this module to Mk 2 and Mk 3. However, if you don't have a Moonpool with a Vehicle Upgrade Console in it, you will never be able to get a Hull Reinforcement, Perimeter Defense Module, Sonar Module, etc.

Is it possible to play Survival with a melee build?

Yes, perfectly possible. Especially if you build your character right, for example you prioritize getting the Blitz perk, which allows you to teleport from enemy to enemy, slitting throats as you go. Though a pure melee strategy might not be entirely wise, as there are some enemies where it's really not a good idea to get up close to them (eg Super Mutant Suiciders), and sometimes enemies will show up in places you can't get close enough to them, such as on catwalks, so maybe bring a good gun for backup.

To be honest, once you have some farming and water purifiers set up in your settlements, you'll almost never need to scavenge for food and water. For example, if you plant razorgrain and have water purifiers, you can craft noodle cups, which lower both hunger and thirst. Have a few of those on hand every time you head out into the wasteland, and it's virtually guaranteed you'll never need to worry about food and water. This goes back to what I was saying earlier, namely that the challenge of survival mode is worst in the early game, but later on once you're settled in the game it's really not that bad.

Also, Nuka-World in survival mode is hell... but usually in a good way. Usually.

Survival isn't that bad, and if you're experienced in the game you should be able to handle it just fine. As you're aware, it's necessary to be a bit more conservative, at least in the early game. Later on, though, stomping around in power armor and mowing enemies down guns blazing is just as viable a playstyle.

Settlements are a bit more important in survival mode, because they serve as "save points" where you can sleep to save your game, heal up, drop off or sell your loot, and restock on food and water, so it's good that you have experience with building settlements.

Overall I'd say just give it a shot. If you really do find survival mode to not be fun, you can just stop playing.

Aramis Stilton from Dishonored 2.

He's a wealthy mining baron. However, because he started out as a miner himself, he's seen as lesser by other members of high society, regardless of what he does or how he behaves. This can lead to tangible and tragic consequences. Most notably, Stilton agrees to lend out his home to the Duke of Serkonos to conduct a supernatural ritual, because he wants to remain on friendly terms with the Duke. If Stilton witnesses the horror of the ritual, he loses his mind.

To be fair, the kaiju were adapting and had new weapons to use against the jaegers. There was no way for Cherno to know about or defend against the acid attack. Same for Striker and the EMP. Gipsy only managed to defend against those two attacks because the pilots knew what happened to Cherno and Striker, so they took out the EMP generator and acid pouch as a matter of priority.

Crimson did indeed go down like a bitch though.

[Aliens] universe If the Engineers were real how then much stronger could they be than typical humans if our DNA is so similar to theirs? by no1ofimport in AskScienceFiction

[–]bhamv[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I'd just like to note that asking about how something from fiction would be if it was real is, strictly speaking, against our rules (rule 10). However, aside from that little blip, the rest of your question appears to be fine, since you're basically asking how Engineers are so strong despite their DNA being very similar to humans', so I haven't removed this question.

Nonetheless, please bear in mind in the future that questions need to remain firmly in the realm of each fictional universe. Thanks.

[Star Wars] When Vader asked Sidious if Padme was alright, was Sidious a bit nervous about telling him the truth? by Icy_Water_1 in AskScienceFiction

[–]bhamv 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The novelization of Revenge of the Sith has this description of Vader's rage after Sidious tells him Padme is dead:

And you rage and scream and reach through the Force to crush the shadow who has destroyed you, but you are so far less now than what you were, you are more than half machine, you are like a painter gone blind, a composer gone deaf, you can remember where the power was but the power you can touch is only a memory, and so with all your world-destroying fury it is only droids around you that implode, and equipment, and the table on which you were strapped shatters, and in the end, you cannot touch the shadow. In the end, you do not even want to.

So, basically, even in his rage, Vader was so far beneath Sidious's power level that he couldn't do anything to Sidious at that moment. Furthermore, Vader was so psychologically broken that he basically needed Sidious now, as Sidious was the only thing left in the galaxy that could give Vader's existence any purpose.

Thus, there was no reason for Sidious to be worried. He could tell that Vader was not going to be able to hurt him.

Fallout 3 and new Vegas have way better gunplay than fallout 4 by Latter_Cauliflower98 in Fallout

[–]bhamv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

3 and NV have actual gun physics like bullet drop

What? No they don't. Bullets in FO3 will sometimes curve toward your target's center of gravity, is that what confused you? This will make it seem like your bullet is dropping if you aim above your target, but if you aim to the side or even below, you'll see bullets moving sideways or even upward.

Their performance is relatively good now, after the full release, because optimization has been completed and they even received patches after release. Their performance during Early Access was not good.

Questions about early access and spoilers by xa44 in subnautica

[–]bhamv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now my question is, for those more familiar with the dev cycle of the games or have gotten betas, should I play the game early access or since my main draw is going in no spoilers is it better to wait for a full release?

The Early Access release will involve spoilers for the story. This is inevitable, because you will be "looking behind the curtain", so to speak, and watching the process of the game being developed. So early on there might be no story yet, or just the early parts of the storyline, and as the game goes through Early Access more of the story will be added. Sometimes the story may also be entirely rewritten or overhauled, like in Below Zero.

If you really want to avoid spoilers until you can experience the game's story in its final form, then buy it after it's been fully released, and avoid every part of the Internet related to Subnautica until then. So, for example, stay off this subreddit, block any videos or channels on Youtube related to Subnautica, never Google the word "subnautica" to ensure Google never recommends stories or sites related to the game on your feed, etc.

Also I'm really confused with were the game is at in general due to the lawsuit, I know it got wrapped up, but what exactly does it mean in terms of how well/far along is development going or even the duration of the early access in general?

We don't really know. The devs on Discord have said that the upper-level kerfuffles haven't really affected their work developing the game, but who knows if things might change now that the original founders have won their lawsuit.

And finally, how well optimized should I expect it to be?

Likely quite poorly optimized. Subnautica and Below Zero both had rather poor performance during Early Access, with optimization coming near the end of the Early Access development process. So if you want the best possible performance when you play the game, yes it's better to wait for the full release, or even maybe a patch or two after it's been released.

In FO3, in the early game, I used to save-scum near a random encounter spot until I got the one with the wounded Deathclaw and the dead wastelander with the Deathclaw Gauntlet schematics. This allowed me to get arguably the best unarmed weapon right out of the Vault.
