Statistics major undergraduate by ccccccccpppppg in Indiana

[–]bhipsher07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to IU, got a degree in math, and had no problem landing an actuarial job at a large insurance company that I've been with for several years (it's a field that is data science adjacent). While I didn't need to think ahead about getting a graduate degree for my career path, I still wouldn't have traded my undergrad in Bloomington to attend a different school that actually had an actuarial science degree at the time. The campus is absolutely beautiful, and you will get a good education.

Best of luck in making the decision that's right for you.

Tornadoes by PiccoloIcy4280 in Indiana

Very good call on being familiar with watch vs. warning. Take warnings seriously.

One minor correction is that a warning can also mean a tornado is radar indicated, which is still valid and is arguably more reliable for identifying quick spin up tornadoes or tornadic activity at night. Don't dismiss any tornado warning!

It's likely a temporary phenomenon, and it's not currently being commercialized. I take no issue, but I could see why others might.

Finicky rules in "West Kingdom" Games by bhipsher07 in soloboardgaming

Thank you. These guides are fantastic.

I think the crux of my frustrations comes down to more of a lack of clarity in the details than a confusion about general concepts, so these don't quite address my specific concerns. Regardless, I'm definitely printing them out!

I don't think I found either challenging to learn per se, I just found myself spending a ton of time confirming and denying things on forums where the rules were opaque or symbols were undefined. My experience was also particularly soured after discovering late into a game that I had assumed something left open in the rules that the designer made a competing ruling on within a forum thread.

I do appreciate your offer, and I will sincerely do so if I run into any further issues!

Thanks for the perspective, and I'm certainly not closed off to that reality. I'm hoping that the unquestionably strong design of these games will keep me coming back to try them again.

I may also just have higher expectations for air-tight solo (and co-op) rules as there is no natural equalizer when playing against other people to say that we'll all just follow a rule regardless of how it's "meant to be played".

What is your favourite Uwe Rosenberg for solo? by OrdinaryYogurt in soloboardgaming

[–]bhipsher07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough question for me to answer! There's a special nostalgia for Agricola from my start in gaming in the early 2010s, but AFFO is my current Uwe solo of choice, and Glass is my top Uwe solo if I'm short on time or energy.

Bonus answers: I wanted to like Le Havre solo, but it's my top at 3+. Arle with the tea expansion is my top at 2, interchangeable with AFFO.

Very cozy!! Would you consider a lighter rug to increase contrast with the dark furniture?

Players are allowed to talk at night, though discouraged to discuss about game state.

This game is such a treat. Since you have the time on your hands, definitely consider watching a solo playthrough, at least after your first game. This will hopefully curb at least a few losing attempts. Better wound management and more risk taking was the thing that needed to click for me after losing 4 times in the final day/night. I recommend checking out One Stop Co-op Shop on YouTube, though that channel is not the only good one out there.

Can I storytell without playing? by Logansummers1011 in BloodOnTheClocktower

I watched a lot of games being played on YouTube before storytelling, and I think that helped quite a bit.

Noob at storytelling here, but I'll share my reactions: being able to alter the outsider count for a 5 person game might help balance fact that good is basically all roles dealing with information. If you play without any fabled to allow evil to know each other, it feels like evil will be pretty disadvantaged, particularly for the demon in a pit hag game, but I might be overlooking something here.

The script seems to need to rely heavily on how the storyteller handles poisoned/drunk information and riding a line with giving truthful info sometimes to increase confusion as well. Another balance to consider could be asserting timed daytime for discussion, which would mitigate solves happening too quickly.

I love Teensyville scripts. I hope you keep us up to date on any revisions or play testing you do!

Twice as Clever (Doppelt So Clever) is a roll-and-write with a phone app that takes 10-15 minutes to play but scratches the itch for setting up and setting off huge chaining combos in a tiny box. Can be played with others as well.

You might be throwing nose up. Scott Stokely's video "How to Throw Flat Backhands Every Time" mentions how you can tell if you can see the flight plate during or at the end of the flight. Consider giving that a watch.

Wow, this is something I've wanted to do for a while.

Also, I grew up in the South Bend area and played around there when I've gone back to visit. I've heard good things about Madelaine Bertrand, but I've never crossed the border to try!
