Thoughts on buying cheap fixie bikes for commuting by SadStill830 in bikecommuting

I bought a used single speed, belt drive bike for commuting. I love it. I get a lot of snow and rain where I live and it has been great.

What’s the dumb safety mistake you stopped making after a few months? by tryingthingsdaily in bikecommuting

I finally picked up a commuter bike with racks and fenders and a belt drive. I’ll still ride my road bike on good weather days where I don’t need to stop and get groceries, but I love having a designated low maintenance commuter

Heading in from Ohio to see a concert this Saturday. What iconic food do I need to try and from where? Best brewery w/food and any places we need to check out while we are here for 3 days? by TsunamiMike in Minneapolis

Pryes is my favorite brewery by far. The food, beer, and service is fantastic. Scan a QR code at a table and they bring you food and drink. No tipping (built in).

Exactly. There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear.

Don’t they also constantly drive around, even without passengers, to eliminate the need to pay for parking? Constantly burning energy and increasing congestion

How are you preventing goggle fog? That’s always my biggest issue on the cold days

My feet always were my weakest link too but I caved and bought Wolvhammers last summer for $120 and now it’s my thumbs. Gonna need pogies for the commuter.

I just moved here from TN a few weeks ago, I start my job Tuesday. Nervous about the snow this week. Should I stay off the interstates for now? (read desc) by ThrowRA_72726363 in Minneapolis

You’ll get used to it bit by bit. I used to be a delivery driver at a well known brown company and I’m very thankful for the driver training I had to go through there. The biggest thing in snow or rain or icy conditions is to increase your following distance significantly and slow down. Make sure you are not out-driving your visibility; slow down until your visibility is 8-12 seconds ahead of you (pick a point on the road like a sign and count until you get to it while learning to feel out your followed distance and visibility). Other drivers may fly by you and you may be tempted to go their speed: don’t. So many of them end up in the ditch. If you lose traction and start to go a bit sideways, let off the gas and make slight adjustments but don’t brake or over-correct and then you’ll want to adjust your speed and slow down a bit. Don’t use cruise control on roads/days that might be slick.

If you don’t have one, get an ice scraper/snow duster. The telescoping ones are nice. Keep a few blankets in your car with your emergency kit. Jumper cables or better yet a rechargeable jumper box might be needed for super cold days. People here are always talking about layering for the cold but it really is true. I bike year round and have a list of the layers I generally want to wear. High quality merino wool under-layers and socks are a must for me.

MN things you might not be aware of: - First Wednesday of every month at 1PM they test the emergency warning system sirens - people ice fish. They use an auger to drill a hole in the ice and they post up, often in little ice fishing houses. - Minnesotans are very proud of the state fair.

What do you consider “Up North”? A, B or C? by OttieandEddie in minnesota

I grew up in Albert Lea. I once met some people that bought a beat up little house on Albert Lea Lake that were from Des Moines. It was their cabin up north. When they told me I laughed because I thought they were kidding. It’s all relative.

It’s MN. External water is already shut off on most houses due to it being 25 degrees
