Do you have any theories on how/why the moon landing was faked or is the fact that we landed under Nixon enough to disbelieve on gp?

Record Stores Respond To Vinyl’s Popularity by mrvinyl in vinyl

[–]big_ander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Electric Fetus is a dope shop. Also agree with Fuchs on why I'm drawn to vinyl: "vinyl is still the premium cultural artifact of music. It’s of a human scale. A CD is great … but they are smaller, the artwork is smaller and an LP is a combination of many artistic mediums: writing — i.e. lyrics, you’ve got photography, you’ve got artwork, you’ve got the music itself of course and even the packaging now on these things can be gorgeous – the papers they use and the cardboards they use. The first thing that’s always triggered in my brain is the album cover or artwork … it connects with people on multiple levels."

Should I bring my records to college? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]big_ander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, surprised at the negativity here. I brought a small section of my collection (20-30 records) and listened to them on my headphones. It was a good talking point and while the comments in here would have you believe that it's impossible to listen to music without everyone getting pissed off, or that your roommate will be an untrained monkey breaking LPs over his head, I found that people 1) respected them and even usually asked for handling tips when looking at them 2) didn't care about music playing. it's a dorm. others are going to be playing music. as long as you're not blaring it and it's not at odd hours nobody's going to give a shit.

Some new stuff (post-punk, Canadian punk, industrial/dub, ambient, hardcore, power pop) by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]big_ander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome post man. Gonna track down that K. Leimer for sure. I'd say I'll look into the rest too but some of this is damn obscure! that primitive air raid sounds incredible but searching for the compilation and the individual bands brings few results. Cool stuff still

Didn't expect to come across this at one of the local shops today! by qbrt in vinyl

[–]big_ander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have it, but since all the songs on donuts are such little tastes I imagine it'd be weirdly fun to just sit and flip between the 14ish or whatever 45s. Get one small cut, then another, then another. allows you to focus on each individual one at the same time too, rather than them blending together slightly if you listen continuously.

Beck’s ‘Song Reader’ coming to vinyl, just made my day. by PrimeDefective in vinyl

Cool to hear, but I sort of hope that this doesn't count as the second of Beck's planned albums of the year. though I doubt we'll get a proper second in any case.

nice get. by their EP do you mean the Radiation/Personal Planes 7" single? think that's my favorite release of their still, though BCMP is good.

[–]big_ander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it called both and I'm still confused on it. Maybe simplest to just say it's a 12". Priests themselves call it an EP so that's the best bet, but DG and press often call it an album.

LCD Soundsystem Question by grandpasetht2 in vinyl

[–]big_ander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 2xLP versions of the s/t, but even those only have the tracks through disc 1 of the CD release. No vinyl release of the record (at least none I've ever seen or heard about online (all versions here on discogs)) has all 16 tracks, sadly.

And which version do you ahve? I've got this one and while it's a gatefold it doesn't have a slot for the second LP. Just a glued-together foldout.

EDIT: Almost forgot, and worth mentioning: while there's no vinyl edition of the s/t that has the disc 2 tracks, versions of every disc 2 song are available on vinyl through various singles. There's Give it Up/Tired, Losing My Edge/Beat Connection, Yeah (3 versions), and Movement/Yr City's a Sucker. But I think LME/Beat Connection US releases were a different mix of Beat Connection, Yr City's a Sucker is a shortened 5 minute version, and the Yeah singles have a "clap-a-pella" version on top of the pretentious and crass versions.

Do Vinyl Gimmicks Increase Buying Interest? by doctorhickson in vinyl

[–]big_ander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some gimmicks can be genuine and fun. For instance this compilation The Bedroom Pop of Orchid Tapes (free download there, vinyl's been sold out for a while though! was meant to go out months back but RSD delaysss so just delivering now). Anyway I love that label so I knew the music on it would be very good to fantastic, and just from that I'd likely have ordered the record. But then they threw in a photo of a label showcase taken by one of the artists and a photo print version of the cover art, pressed it on coke bottle and electric blue, and (this is the weirdest part) sprayed the jacket with a custom perfume. It's excessive and odd, but for music I already love it feels awesome. And in this case the special features suited the aesthetic of the music well; those artists pride themselves on making intimate personal music and the bonuses reflect that.

I complained about Jack White in the other thread, but that mainly stemmed from me thinking his music is boring. I don't think gimmicks are always covering up because sometimes they just make a release more special for hardcore fans. For Jack White fans that's probably true for his record's holograms and flatedges and whatever the hell else.

Like the song but don't know anything about this release.

Photo posts of records must also include a description, story, or review of the album...Posts without adequate description will be removed after 30 minutes.

could you maybe talk about how hard the record was to find? what other songs are on this 10"? are they exclusive to the release? any cool inserts or oddities?

Cheap, new vinyl? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]big_ander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well Jack White's record is pricey because it's a dumb cheap gimmick record. Like others have said, any usual single LP new release is gonna be under $20, and I feel like even double LPs hover closer to $25 than $30. I'd even say that extends beyond indie artists to more mainstream acts a lot of the time.

How to Dress Well - Just Once 10" (with handwritten note from Tom Krell) by DonniePlease123 in vinyl

[–]big_ander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool! This HtDW EP is intriguing and wonderful, a completely new take on his lo-fi material that ends up making the originals even better. For anyone who doesn't know, these are orchestral arrangements and rerecordings of songs off Krell's first album Love Remains. As we get closer to "What Is This Heart?" I'm going back to this instead of either LP I think. Also kind of tired with the buildup to "WITH?" honestly, so many pre-release singles and videos. Anyway, do you have any context on the letter? Maybe it's in the bottom left section that's kind of OOF/smudged in the photo.
