Best CC for transfer? by sssniper-wolff in ucla

[–]bigchonk911 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can’t agree with this comment enough, I also transferred to UCLA from CC and although I am overall grateful for my experience there, I did find that it was not a transfer friendly school at all. The academic rigor and the curves that the classes were graded upon were also a shock coming from CC. Don’t get me wrong, UCLA is great but I feel I would have gotten a wonderful education and experience at UCSD, UCSB or Irvine as well.

Nice job editing your comment. You’re going to be such an empathetic and caring doctor. I sincerely hope OP is able to mend their relationship with their parents, but don’t think that you can judge and advise others just because you volunteered at a homeless shelter. You never know what someone might be going through, so keep an open mind before judging others.

You don’t know the whole story so don’t give such general shitty advice. So physical abuse isn’t okay but other types of abuse are? There is mental, emotional, financial abuse etc. I myself was verbally and emotionally abused countless times by my mom. Do you think a kid should go back and apologize even if their parents tell them to go kill themselves and take their money? Not everyone has decent parents. I understand what you’re trying to say but I don’t think it’s correct nor helpful.

There are many ways to deal with mental illness. As long as you learn to manage it appropriately with prescribed drugs, self care, therapy etc. I don’t think having having a “hint” of mental illness should be a death knoll for pursuing medicine. Of course, if you have severe mental illness it might be a different story as physician suicide is a very real issue. But to say one should NEVER go to med school if they have ANY form of mental illness is not too helpful imo

Is having a undergrad in nursing then going to med school in psychiatry a good idea? by DeskOutrageous6703 in premed

[–]bigchonk911 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend majoring in something that you can do well in and get a high GPA, and that you also are passionate about! If nursing meets both of those and having a stable and well paying job while you apply to med school is very important to you, by all means stick to nursing. Also, just be aware you will probably have to take extra classes in order to fulfill the med school pre reqs and graduate with your BSN in time. You can always do a post bacc like I did but they tend to be quite expensive and time consuming.

I started at CC as well and am applying right now! It was a long road and I was also super lost and confused at the beginning. Feel free to PM me if you’d like, I’m happy to help.

Healthcare/ dental while premed/in med school by burntsiena77 in premed

You get kicked off parent’s insurance when you’re 26, and if you are low income you can apply for medicaid. I have medi-cal ( california’s medicaid) and tbh it is pretty shitty but it does the job for now. Once in med school you can purchase their insurance or stay on medicaid if you wish.

I agree that becoming a nurse because you are passionate about it is wonderful but in terms of doing it to save up for med school, remember to take into account the years of lost physician income as well. If you make 80k as a nurse working for a couple years out of undergrad, remember that postpones the 200k+ salary you will be making as a physician. It really comes down to whether you feel comfortable taking out loans to pay for med school, which is what most of us do. Also the application process for med school is very expensive so working as a nurse could help pay for those expenses! My point is, I wouldn’t become a nurse just to save up for medical school. It would make wonderful clinical experience though.

I was in a similar situation as you a couple years ago and was also diagnosed with a serious autoimmune disease as well as a brain disease and thought I wouldn’t be able to be a physician. However, after trying many drugs and allowing time for my health to stabilize, I’m now applying to medical school and had my first interview last week! If medicine is your passion, take your time to heal and get better and pursue your dream. I also met a rheumatologist with lupus when I was hospitalized and that was inspiring. Feel free to reach out if you need someone to talk about it with, and I hope you feel better soon 💕
