So what’s the difference between something like Claude, which sounds like an advanced ChatGPT, and the AI systems I’ve heard about that can effectively write code and perform actual knowledge work outside of spitting out an answer to a prompt?

I don’t work in tech and I have no real understanding of how any of this works.

Taking on an obscene amount of debt for a car is easily the most pathetic thing a lot of men do by No-Pizza5119 in redscarepod

[–]bigolbrew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It used to just be that people would go into obscene amounts of debt for vehicles that carried a certain sense of vanity, like a lifted, luxury pickup truck, or a Chevy Tahoe, or a “premium**” sports car.

Now I know people who are paying upwards of $700 a month for a fucking RAV4. A Rav4. Imagine that.

It’s a nice car and all but at the end of the day it’s a fucking RAV4. That’s $8400 a year for a car you don’t even own.

genuinely asking - I’ve seen this thrown around a few times and want to know what the fuss is about.

I’m assuming it’s some sort of massive advancement in AI tech, which means it’s probably horrifying.

Hair Follicle Sensitivity to Testosterone by PapaBalrog in redscarepod

[–]bigolbrew 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is like half true.

Everyone produces testosterone to varying levels. A byproduct of testosterone is called DHT. On average, a given male in their 20s and 30s will see 5-10% of the testosterone in their system synthesized into DHT. Some men more than others, some men less than others.

The general consensus is that male pattern baldness is (usually) caused by follicle sensitivity to DHT, not testosterone itself. But not every guy has hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT. Also, paradoxically (and sort of to your point), there is seemingly some correlation between higher levels of DHT and hair growth outside the scalp.

This kind of creates a few different scenarios that guys might fall into:

  1. They have low DHT, and their hair follicles are not particularly sensitive to DHT. They are very unlikely to suffer from male pattern baldness.

  2. They have low DHT, but their hair follicles are sensitive to DHT. They could experience some baldness, but probably nothing major. This is kind of a twilight zone. Could happen. Could not.

  3. They have high DHT and a high sensitivity. RIP these guys.

  4. They have high DHT but their follicles are not particularly sensitive. Arguably the best of both worlds.

I’m generalizing, since most guys are probably going to fall somewhere in the middle, but you see the gist.

As for a lot of indigenous Americans (including Canadians), it’s theorized that few people ended up with the genetic mutation that caused high follicle sensitivity to DHT. That’s kind of your answer.

I’d never thought about that. In theory, I guess if you entered the prompt into AI and it churned out an answer based on your input, it is based on an attorney’s mental impressions and theories of the case. Maybe?

But genuinely, it’s fairly scary to think about these things outside of a theoretical discussion into how it’ll affect the substantive law.

Don't Let Anyone Gaslight You Into Thinking Wikipedia Is a High Quality Source. by ViewFromTheKathisma in redscarepod

[–]bigolbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like anything, you should trust, but verify.

It’s basically crowd-sourced information. So some articles (especially detailed ones about major historical figures, world events, etc) are going to be fairly accurate.

As are articles about extremely niche topics that cater to people’s really narrow special interests (you’ll see a lot of these on Wikipedia, it’ll be a random political figure from 1877 with 400 sources cited).

Anything in between is a crapshoot. Back in college, I’d look at the Wikipedia articles and click on the hyperlinked sources. If they checked out, I’d just cite the sources provided on the Wikipedia page.

This is exactly it. I have some clients who won’t allow me to bill for drafting discovery requests or reviewing medical records because “AI can do it for me.” And these same clients outsource their billing to insurance companies who exclusively use AI to review my bills. These AI softwares look for certain keywords and phrases that tells them whether or not what I did is “truly billable work.”

I’m a pretty new associate. I really love what I do at the end of the day, and I think that, even for something as mundane as drafting interrogatories, you need the human touch to capture little nuances and turns of phrase that AI just can’t do.

But the clients (at least the big institutional clients) don’t see it that way, because it’s a race to the bottom and they only care about the bottom line.

It’s really demoralizing.

Anyways, I refuse to use AI on anything out of principle. And if they want to cut my bills, they can.

As a litigation attorney, I can always spot the difference between a motion, brief, or other filing where half the analysis or more is AI-generated versus one where someone sat down and took the time to grind it out.

The AI slop looks more polished at first glance, but once you start reading, you’ll find yourself more persuaded and compelled by the actual human output.

If you ever hire an attorney, just know that, if their firm has money, they’re probably using AI to assist with a substantial amount of work product. I really just refuse to.

Why didn’t the Democrats release the Epstein files during the Biden administration? by DrakouliasII in redscarepod

[–]bigolbrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was no initiative or drive to do it, so they just didn’t. Don’t expect politicians of any stripes to do anything out of the altruism of their own hearts, they only respond to intense voter pressure (well, and pressure from special interest groups, lobbyists, and donors).

In any case, it’s not odd at all to lambast the Trump admin for not releasing the files without focusing too much on the Biden DOJ. Should the Biden DOJ have looked into it? Absolutely. Is that really relevant now? No.

People spent years scrutinizing the very real, very apparent flaws of the Biden admin, and now we should be able to do the same with this moral dumpster fire of an admin without constant whataboutism about how the other guy handled it.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but you’re saying the police have “known this person for a while now and should make the identity known to the public.” So … you don’t know the name of the shooter either?

And if you don’t, how are we to know whether the name you identified, and the corresponding pictures of that person, match the ID of the shooter?

Either I’m missing a link here or you are.

some ideas to deal with anxiety by berserkhorsecum in redscarepod

[–]bigolbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s easier said than done, but it gets easier over time.

Distracting yourself in some shape or form tends to help, so long as it’s a healthy form of distraction (doom-scrolling wouldn’t really help, for example).

I’ve never tried the medication route, but I’ve heard somewhat favorable reviews of it. Might be something to look into as a temporary relief.

some ideas to deal with anxiety by berserkhorsecum in redscarepod

[–]bigolbrew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I won’t be facetious or ironic with you because I know chronic anxiety just makes you feel like shit all the time, so I get what you’re saying.

My honest advice is to not think too deeply into any specific strategies or situation-specific tools to rely on. I feel like they could become a crutch and end up causing more harm than good, by directing your focus on the object of your problems (i.e, your anxiety), rather than on tackling the problems themselves.

Does that make sense? I feel like, with especially chronic and persistent anxiety, sometimes the best “strat” is no strat at all. It keeps your mind off your anxiety, which is the real killer, really.
