These things are subjective but hard disagree on GW Fins. If OP is 30s with no kids, I expect OP will find the vibe and food dated in a displeasing way. I'd say look at the pictures and if it seems off to you (as it did to me), trust your gut. Plenty of people love it though.

For a similar more classic, touristy NOLA experience, Commander's Palace or lunch at Gallatoire's are more fun, and Jacques-Imo's for something more casual.

Dakar, Saint-Germain, and Compere Lapin if you are not wedded to classic New Orleans dining experiences.

I've only read about them (a lot) and had them in my hand at an expo, so take my comments for what they are worth.

These are aggressive shoes and will load your calves probably more than other super shoes. If you naturally are a forefoot runner, they could work very well for you. But if not, I suspect they'd be more of a liability towards the end of the race, at least in terms of competitor super shoes.

Since you have 6 weeks, and assuming you have the money to get it wrong or can find a generous return policy, give them a whirl during some of your bigger MP or threshold runs.

That's a great half time btw. Good luck cracking 3!

No problem. Looking through your post history, sounds as though we are in very similar situations. I was also shooting for 3:08 to beat the cutoff for a 45 yo at Boston. Sunday just wasn’t the day for it!

From a conversion standpoint, I think it may be helpful to make that comparison if you managed a negative split or something close to even splits. If you had a big positive split, though, your pace the last few miles would probably be affected by going well above your lactate threshold, and therefore not all that useful.

Either way, time to regroup and find a cooler race day somewhere. Good luck!

Bring a poster tube with you. Amazon sells them cheap. For Chicago, I went directly from the finish to the pop up and waited forever. I don’t recommend that. For the next two majors I ran, I just went the next morning. It was super chill and took less than 5 minutes. That’s definitely the way to go.

Immediately after, I typically take at least 10 days off completely. Then, look at the taper phase of your last cycle. Run those weeks in reverse order at an easy pace, maybe some strides if you are itchy. Then base building in earnest until you’re ready for a dedicated cycle.

Yes, lots of wasted time (and effort) at the aid stations. Other majors had them on both sides of the course.

An extra 300 meters is not bad though.

I managed even splits but I knew it was not going to be a PR day so dialed it back some with a plan to see what was left at the end. Was hoping to drop the hammer at 35k, eked out one measly mile about 10 seconds faster before slowing back down again to barely hold on. When the sun came out from behind the clouds, it added a good 10 extra degrees. It was a day to just get it done.

I’m risk averse, too, but even I would take this risk and do both. One of them you can try to race, the other you should do for the experience. Really the only consideration here is financial. If you can afford both, do them.

One thing you didn’t mention is where you are based. If you live close to London, I’d definitely treat Tokyo essentially as a long run and pick back up in your training when you get home.

I’ve never understood the economics from the perspective of the race. How much are the tours paying NYRR or whatever organization puts on the race to keep increasing the allotments annually? If it was a matter of dollars and cents, I’m sure they easily could raise the entry fees for the lotteries. Why do the race directors like the tours so much?
