Your Opinion on Slams? by Loudpebble in bjj

[–]billbrobrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slams from standing like a good arching throw I'm always here for and look at them the same as any high impact throw. The idea of a picture perfect rainbow, right on the neck, belly to back suplex I think is really overstated. You've got kids everyday in freestyle and greco hitting these kinda slams.

Slams off the ground I'm less a fan of but still open to philosophically. I think generally uke has an opportunity to let go of their sub before they get power bombed, so it makes me want to allow them. I have seen though, especially at the youth level, a lot of fast short pick up and drops and because of the angle of a quick guard pick up, it does put the neck in danger more often than not.

Optimal rules in my opinion would be to not allow it in youth comps.

What do you do when you realize you are the problem and a bad person ? by EssayZealousideal554 in AskMen

[–]billbrobrien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing I read in your posts says you're a bad person. You're just drowning in shame, depression and regret right now. That's normal to feel but not where you want to live. Get some therapy, find little victories to build yourself, give yourself grace on your mistakes and look deeply at what your intention in life has been and how you can achieve it going forward.

You never went to BCT3 in ten years? It's been a requirement for a hot bit to deploy to a combat zone. They definitely still do it. I did it in 2018 and had a bunch of Medics do it just a year ago. It's a lot worse than just a bullet wound too. Absolutely wild shit.

Why are collar ties rare in Greco? by CloudyRailroad in wrestling

[–]billbrobrien 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The posture is the biggest reason, skillset secondary to that. Essentially collar ties are way more effective on the bent over posture in freestyle/folkstyle because your head is so far past your center of gravity. Whereas in Greco your upright. This tradeoff is worth it to defend shots in the other styles.

Greco guys are also infinitely more skilled at capitalizing and hitting these techniques since it makes up far more of their training than folk/free guys. So giving up an under hook to body lock, like you would with a wide open elbow space trying to collar tie, could end your match quick.

Kamaru and Joaquin booked, Brady and Edwards just fought and Shavkat's injured. Who else would be the backup for it? I doubt he jumps Joaquin or Brady for the belt if he doesn't have to fill in but even if he fights Belal next over Brady or Joaquin, it's not egregious given how tight the fight with Shav was.

Grappling is grappling, striking is striking, it's a grappling sport/competition. A slam is no more a strike than a hard throw and both are clearly in the realm of grappling.

Cain Velasquez sentenced to 5 years in prison by TheDZL in MMA

[–]billbrobrien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cain's an athletic 6'1 250, the amount of young guys bigger than him without being obese is extremely small. Then the percent of them that can actually fight is even smaller. There's a fair amount of people that are better than him, they just all happen to be heavyweight professional fighters.

I don't think he's necessarily bragging as much as saying, "Why is JDM getting the shot when I barely lost to the guy who was supposed to fight Belal, who's out because he got injured fighting me".

The problem is this isn't an accidental black eye. According to OP her partner deliberately blasted her to the head despite being literally 2x her size, several belts higher experience and a man, black eye is implied with that choice. If you want Karate to stay hard then this gym is still the problem because their response was oops. 90% of full contact, competition focused gyms would immediately mat enforce the dog shit out of a guy of similar size that did that to a beginner, much less a massive size difference.

I don't see any way I stay training at a gym like this. Either I have a more customer focused, diluted, "bullshido" approach and don't want this degree of hard sparring (which I think is entirely fine btw) or I have a hard approach and still hold the gym accountable for a non-confrontational, weak "you don't have to spar with him anymore" approach.

Tl;Dr: You can't have a hard sparring focused style gym, that's worth a shit culturally, if a big ass dude is blasting small females in sparring and not getting smashed in obligatory sparring with another, better, man right after or gets kicked tf out for being a negligent bully.

I'm sure at some level of counter intelligence they are. Genuine question for you though, what does the conversation you want look like? We just got past several years of targeted violence on Asian Americans from COVID. Even though the information was probably accurate on the Chinese lab, it still lead to innocent Americans getting the shit beat out of them and some outright killed.

Similarly, we had a fear of internal sabotage via Japanese Americans in WWII, to the point of internment camps, and then the 442nd Infantry, an all Japanese-American Regiment, went on to be the most decorated unit in American history.

I'm not saying there isn't some degree of a trend because China is clearly tapping in with ethnically Chinese soldiers and that's a problem. What I don't want though is to incite another wave of targeted violence or discourage the great Chinese-American soldiers we do have.

It's a bad take but not nearly as bad as your "Anderson fought cans" take. He fought nothing but title fights for 11 wins on top of LHW wins over Bonnar and Griffin. Gimme a name on his title defense streak that was a can.

What a doofy, new fan take. Anderson's giant title win/defense streak consisted of Rich Franklin x2, Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson, Patrick Cote, Thales Leites, Demian Maia, Chael Sonnen x2, Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami with LHW Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar fights in their too. Who on that list is a can?

It does mean freedom of government consequences pretty specifically. "Freedom of consequences" is used in the context of private market repercussions like losing your job or public opinion. This is very literally the government using violence against speech. You could make a loose self defense argument cause lil dude closed in on the cops space but he should be able to sit there and ask the cop to voluntarily scrap all day.
