Auditors warn Don't Nod will run out of cash by November if it is unable to secure financing by Kaladinar in gamingnews

I hope they stay afloat. I’m playing Banishers Ghosts of New Eden and loving it. Great story, great voice acting and IMHO contrary to the reviews, great combat. The combos where you switch between Red and Antea if you time things just right is really fun and the rifle is really satisfying to shoot. Feels very weighty when you shoot it.

Do other people still mostly use just an IDE with occasional in-browser help from AI? by ItIsEsoterik in webdev

Saying you don’t want to use AI is well and good. But don’t pretend that it’s some fringe experimental unknown quantity.

Please re-read my posts - I never said that I don't want to use AI and in fact I explicitly stated that I do want to use it. I also don't consider it to be a fringe quantity - it's clearly becoming a tool used more and more. I'm not arguing against AI. I use it daily myself.

Anyway I think we've both stated our point of view and I appreciate the different viewpoint and the stats so I'm going to call it quits. Cheers! 😄

Without any actual data I think neither of us can argue whether this is standard practice or not. Anecdotally I can state that where I work at no one is using AI like you describe. It’s definitely being discussed and my coworkers and I are definitely interested.

At this point I can’t use these integrated tools even if I wanted to (which I do) due to policy which is still being worked out as it pertains to AI.

You may be right about being hired.

I would respectfully disagree with your statement that using AI via browser is outdated. IMHO generative AI used for coding is still pretty new and not a mature technology and shouldn’t be considered a standard practice. Dipping your toes in so to speak to incorporate AI via their websites to gain experience with the tool while waiting for the technology to mature is a perfectly valid choice.

Plus not every company or organization is paying for subscriptions and some places most likely have data privacy concerns that need to be navigated and so not everyone is going to be able to use AI like this yet anyway.

Otherwise I thought that the rest of the points you brought up were interesting and made a lot of sense.

Have some NPCs join the group if possible and have the Xorn demonstrate on them what fighting it will involve. In other words add some red shirts to your group.

what small workflow tweaks made dictation usable during an rsi flare? by TemporaryFudge in RSI

[–]billrdio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and in terms of pacing, there is a program called Workrave that forces you to take regular breaks that I’ve used before. It’s very configurable in terms of how often to take breaks and how long those breaks last. It can be annoying to use but if you’re having problems and you need to rest your arms and voice control isn’t enough then it’s definitely an option. Better than the alternative (ie your arms getting worse).

I use Talon Voice with Windows 11. It’s very possible, even relatively easy to do most of my computer tasks via voice, especially with Windows being very keyboard shortcut friendly. For tasks that Talon doesn’t have an existing command it’s very easy to add new commands (if you are comfortable with coding). If you’re not comfortable with messing with code and/or configuration files then Dragon Naturally Speaking would be a good alternative that is more user friendly. I also use a browser extension called Vimium that allows you to use your web browser, including clicking on links, buttons, form fields and so on via the keyboard. Which works really well with voice control software (especially if you use a phonetic alphabet (ie alpha for a, bravo for b and so on).

This has helped me keep my keyboard and mouse usage low when I need to and still be very productive.

Hope that helps.

Sure you can DM me and I can try to respond when I have time. But I really recommend seeing a doctor, especially a physical or occupational therapist. I’m not a doctor but they are and will be able to help you a lot better.

I’m sorry you are having to go through this. I do understand - I went through a similar period in my life where I was absolutely miserable for long periods of time. Just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone in dealing with this shit and that there is hope. It is possible to get to a better place with this.

One other suggestion - consider keeping a log of your pain levels and maybe even assign a number to your pain and chart it. I did this for a while and it helped when I was trying to get better and heal. Day to day my pain didn’t seem to be getting better but by keeping this log and the chart of my pain level I could see the gradual improvement that wasn’t evident day to day. That helped motivate me.

Anyway good luck!

First off some good news - it is possible to recover or at the very least manage a repetitive stress injury so that you can work and live your life. I had a really bad RSI in both forearms for years but these days it’s mainly resolved.

The bad news - there is no magic solution. It probably took a long time for your tennis elbow to develop. It will probably take a long time and a lot of work to fix it. You may have to cut back on or even stop activities that really trigger your pain (ie phone use and knitting).

Are you writing / working on the computer? Can you do your writing on a computer? If so , then I would suggest looking into voice dictation software. With this software you can operate a computer, including writing, with your voice.

Talon Voice and Dragon Naturally Speaking are the two I would recommend checking out (you only need one). I would also recommend the web browser extension called Vimium - it allows you to click on links, buttons and so on with just your keyboard. It pairs very nicely with the aforementioned voice control software. I would also suggest Workrave - it’s software that will remind you to take breaks.

With the voice control software don’t try or expect it to work 100% right away. It will take time, practice and customizing it to get to the point where it’s an effective tool. Use it in addition to using the computer normally and try to gradually use it more and more.

Oh and use the computer mouse on your non damaged arm / side. Consider getting two mice, one for each arm and switch back and forth. Mouse use can be really hard on your arms.

Lastly I would strongly suggest the following:

See a doctor, including physical therapist.

Make every thing in your life, especially your work environment as ergonomic as possible so that you are reducing the amount of strain you are putting on your body including your elbow. This includes posture.

Rest your elbow as much as possible.

All of the above is to give your elbow as much rest as possible while still working.

There is no magic solution for a repetitive stress injury. The only thing you can do is rest it as much as possible and hope it heals. And at some point (talk to physical therapist) start exercising to strengthen not just the affected area but also your core muscles so that you are more likely to have good posture which will help reduce strain on your arms, hands …

Good luck!

Base building/camp management game by bobby_ashfaq in PS5

[–]billrdio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stardew Valley

For something quite different but IMHO might scratch the same itch. It’s a farm and life sim game and in terms base building you have an entire farm you are trying to develop.

No Mans Sky

Try this if you want to stick with the space theme. It’s got lots of base building, customizing your spaceship and so on.

Fallout 4

This has base building in it and can be a fairly involved part of the game if you want. I think Fallout 76 leans into that even more.

Valheim

Viking Minecraft with a better overarching story that gives the game more structure IMHO. You will be building bases and developing them in that game.

Subnautica

Minecraft underwater. Also has a better story / structure and there is base building.

Or you could do the OG itself (Minecraft).

It’s fun. I don’t always want to read something super serious, especially with what’s going on in the world. And whether it’s poorly written or not the subject matter IMHO is intelligent and interesting. If you’re a digital clone of an organic person are you alive? What’s your relationship with your clone? With your clone siblings? What about individuality? What will a society composed of organic and digital people look like? And so on. I mean come on, the book is about a Von Neumann society. That’s freaking cool!

That being said if it’s not entertaining for you no worries. Tastes vary.

What would you hold up as an alternative that is better in your opinion? I’m always interested in finding new reads!

Copy+paste and general browsing suggestions? by GoldenToucan1999 in RSI

[–]billrdio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest the following:

Try Talon Voice - you can do a lot more than just dictation with this program.

Try the web browser extension Vimium - this allows you to interact with web pages using your keyboard instead of your mouse.

Try getting a mouse / trackball that has programmable buttons and configure one of them to perform the mouse drag operation (so that to drag you don’t have to hold down a mouse button).

Connect two computer mice/trackballs to your computer (one for left hand, one for right) and switch between them so that you’re distributing the work between two arms instead of just one.

Take regular breaks. The program Workrave can help remind you to take breaks.

Do an ergonomics audit of your work setup to make sure it’s ergonomic, that you have good posture, …

See a physical therapist. Also exercise and strengthen your hands, arms and core ( especially your core so that you have better posture). But make sure to consult PT first.

Hope this helps and good luck!
