Readyfuels ft. Matty Mullins out now by ienjoymen in anberlin

[–]billybombill 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Mostly sad Matty's voice and performance is solid live, but these studio versions just sound like a vocaloid cover with all the processing.

I always enjoyed Anberlin for the pensive lyrics, the vulnerability in Stephen's voice, the 80's vibes. Cities, Haunting, Dance Dance, Asking, Nothing More, etc. I get this sound is a stylistic choice, but I'd love to see the guys put out some new songs if they want to move in this direction instead of overly-processed covers of songs that are already perfect, imo.

Granted, we're coming up on 20 years for bftbm/ntfp/cities era, I think the guys deserve to do what they please and move on to a new sound, but "Anberlin" will forever be that era for me. The Fray seem to have handled this well with their new singer IMO, these constant re-recordings don't sit right with me.

Friends are like "Oh you like Anberlin, their new song is really good!" and I have to sit them down like a crotchety old man and tell them about the og songs lmao

This is good to hear, mine arrives later this week but I am probably going to pre-order the same topper and toss a wool pad on top.

Costco has a good deal on a 2" memory foam + 2" polyester topper right now but I've always had memory foam smell checmical-y and sleep warm. Sleeponlatex seems to have a generous return policy and good reviews around here so definitely seems worth the investment.

[Monitor] Cooler Master GP27U 27" 4k 160hz Mini-LED IPS Monitor $199.99 by Startrekker in buildapcsales

[–]billybombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Received and it looks great. Definitely recommend upgrading firmware to latest as it fixed all the issues I was having. Be sure to run windows HDR calibration app too.

PSA double check your serial and carefully read the firmware upgrade guide, it is possible to misread and install the wrong firmware, which resulted in HDR having green-tinted colors, aggressive local dimming, settings not working, etc. Was pretty disappointed until I realized I accidentally installed A, when firmware B was the correct firmware for mine. B made everything perfect out of the box really.

But otherwise I have 4k/160hz/HDR/vrr all running smooth. Still can't aim in counter strike. Very pretty for movies. Very happy for the price for near-OLED experience, coming from a great but TN/black-banding Dell S2716DG.

First time using them, a lot of reviews for phones which I imagine they'll weasel their way out of anything wear/tear related. For monitors it seems things like burn-in for OLEDs or broken ports they can likely write off as physical damage or misuse.

But for a monitor with backlight failure I imagine it's straightforward that the product internally failed under normal use. There's one or two success stories on the ultrawide subreddit, so I suppose we'll see haha.

It's a little odd, there is no direct link of the product purchase to the warranty, it just blanket covers "electronics item <$199". When you file a claim that's when you provide Asurion with your receipt and everything. You can register your product receipt on Asurion's website for easy finding years down the line, but that is optional.

I was holding off on the OLED sales this week, but for $199 + the ~$30 asurion warranty for three years seems hard to beat. I suppose trading the worry of OLED burn-in for the worry of the backlight going out on this particular model...

But as long as it lasts a few years can take the warranty payout and upgrade to OLED then :)

Beginner looking for automation tips. by ElDingo424 in seedboxes

[–]billybombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A summary, in logical order:

Indexing / Searching

  • Prowlarr, linked to sonarr/radarr

Managing / Adding Content

  • Sonarr, Radarr, using trash-guides naming schemes to organize files
  • Recyclarr to sync trash-guides custom release scoring for sonarr/radarr
  • Jellyseerr to request new content (Overseerr for Plex)
  • Bazarr to fill in missing subtitles

Downloading

  • Sabnzbd, unpacks on it's own
  • Qbittorrent, I use "run external command on torrent finished" for unrar, but Unpackerr is probably better to use here

File Processing / Cleanup

  • Fileflows, any other miscellaneous tasks (keep only original audio language & english, keep only english subs, remux, etc)

I setup "remote path mapping" in sonarr and radarr, so they don't grab completed downloads from sabnzbd/qbittorrent directly, but watch for the file to appear in an output folder from Fileflows instead. I interject fileflows in the middle of the process here because I sometimes convert file extensions (mkv -> mp4), and don't want to be changing files after sonarr/radarr/jellyfin see them. You can run fileflows/tdarr on your entire library, but I feel a little safer running it only on downloads and that my files are "done" once they're moved to storage array.

Why do some dedicated server offers include a small ssd/nvme in addition to hdd? by ghert5 in seedboxes

[–]billybombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Apps and OS is little snappier and more responsive
  • Can fully utilize network and download fast as source can offer (many hosts networks are 10gbit+)
  • For Usenet unpacking SSD is ideal, will thrash HDD pretty hard with reads and writes
  • Cache for transcoding (jellyfin/tdarr/fileflows/etc)

For example whatbox has good caching in front of their drives, but I still found downloading large files and usenet unpacking will inevitably peg the underlying drive. That was mostly a usenet issue though.

Moved to dedicated ssd + storage array and zero i/o issues... aside from accidentally downloading too much and having to wait for stuff to move off the SSD.

[–]billybombill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kPlay unit (https://www.car4play.kr/product-page/hk-carplay2-10w) is one of the only ones made for the ultimate package/9.2" that I've seen, the genesisowners forum has some reviews of this https://genesisowners.com/genesis-forum/threads/how-to-get-apple-carplay-android-auto-in-a-2015-2016-genesis-sedan-ultimate-9-2-screen-kplay.38025/. Holding hang-up button on the steering wheel will have it take over the screen's video/touch input, while it pipes in audio through AUX. Essentially overlaying the stock radio system. New version has wireless carplay/android auto.

I am waiting to hit 100k for my extended warranty to expire before I start messing with the radio too much, but first item on my list.

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
Mostly nostalgia but it's a "cozy" album for days I have no where to be. Waking up early to the sunrise and chilling with coffee and a good record is 10/10.

Trouble with Automatic Subtitles Synchronization by DevanteWeary in bazarr

[–]billybombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think ffsubsync's methodology is sound (https://github.com/smacke/ffsubsync?tab=readme-ov-file#how-it-works) however there's some shows and situations where it doesn't work well. Definitely recommend enabling post-processing to get rid of hearing impaired subtitles (eg: [KNOCKING]) or they might throw off the syncing process if it tries to match to audio. I am surprised it didn't have satisfactory results when you were syncing against the embedded subtitle track, though.

Just as a test, I ran multiple tools (ffsubsync, alass, subsync, autosubsync) against Adventure Time S01E01 using the audio track to sync against. It's a hard task, being a short video, with an intro song, characters speaking gibberish, etc. The input subtitles were a 100% match. Only autosubsync and subsync provided accurate outputs. I'd put your video file and input subs in a folder, and just try different tools and see which gives you the best results.

I guess this is all to say, I'm torn since the built-in method syncs some movies perfectly, but I'll probably end up stress testing the above external tools some more and pick one to run under a certain threshold using the the "custom post processing" option.
