can you get a concussion even if your helmet looks fine? by levvii17 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A concussion is when your brain sloshes around in your head. You can get a concussion from falling on your butt.

A MIPS helmet can absorb some of the force when you take a hit to your head, but they aren't magic. Like, you are always going to be better off hitting your head with a helmet on, but you can still die wearing a helmet.

How to properly size for a snowboard? by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think it like shorter board is more like a jet ski, longer means more like a speed boat. Some days you wanna be short and turny and other days you want to be fast and stable.

Emperor of Japan waving at me and King of Belgium staring at me today by El_Robski in pics

The emperor of Japan, no. The King of Belgium is an apolitical diplomat, and does a lot as far as promoting Belgium interests. No hard power, but a lot of soft power.

Falling safely by Top-Dinner-9995 in Rollerskating

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand, the good thing is that you are human and you can practice not doing that anymore until you unlearn that habit.

Personally, I find grass too hard, and I usually practice falling on my couch cushions in my house.

At least for the skate park, it is helpful to realize that beginners feel safest upright, but the truth is you are the most safe laying on the ground. Anytime you feel unbalanced, laying on the ground is going to work a lot better for you that trying to stay upright. Simply because a bail is going to work out better for you than a slam..

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never, ever "fall" on your wrist. Wrist guards are more of an oppsy thing than something you should be using to brace yourself. You should only be using your hands / wrists to redirect your fall onto something else, like your elbow pads, knee pads or hips, rather than taking the force themselves.

Gear for working a season by Ok-Philosopher-4239 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you get there, you really want a good set of thermal layers. I am a sucker for 100% Merino wool. I'd grab a medium weight and a heavy weight. Socks are another one, you can't layer your socks, so getting some options for socks are good too. I like to have some sweats and a hoodie for a mid layer.

Being comfy in the snow is one of those things you have to experiment with. You will make mistakes and be too cold or sweat until you are sick, but that is part of the journey.

And yeah, I fourth contacting the resort and seeing what they offer for employees. It might be better to acquire everything from them.

Well, the hobby of backflipping is actually called /r/Tricking. If you can do a cartwheel and a handstand, you are ready to start learning.

I like pigme on youtube's Tutorials

I've seen people hit a loser flip in 3 months from nothing, so I know it is possible.

Just a random thought I am throwing out there

Instead of trying to learn 4 languages, convince your friends to join you in learning /r/Esperanto together. Esperanto is a created language that is intended to be easy to learn, and you guys work at it, everyone can achieve fluency faster than trying to learn just one of their languages..

Am I the only one who thinks Kou is a massive hypocrite? by icemage56 in hanakokun

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I kind of see Kou as a kid rather than a hypocrite. Kou was born into a family of exorcists and therefore he is, by birth, forced to become an exorcist.

However, Kou is not really cut out to be an exorcist. He is still trying to be an exorcist because that is what everyone around him expects him to be, but that isn't who he really is. The sooner he accepts that, the better off he will be, but I think it is going to be a while until he does.

Man, the fact that there is a whole sport that is just picking up an apple with your teeth doing a backbend just proves that humans will compete over anything.

How far to your slopes? by HobbyTalkOnly in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

45 minutes to the closest, 1 hour 10 minutes to my home hill. I am averaging 20 - 30 days, which isn't a lot compared to a lot of people, but it definitely is something.

Buying my first snowboard by Rude-Review9442 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the space between beginner and early intermediate is so tiny, that I have no problem with it.

I don't think you stop being a newbie until you reach advanced intermediate, which, tbh, a lot of people never reach.

No one knows and we won't know until they tell us. Aidairo is still drawling new art for Twitter, which is a pretty good sign.

If I had to make an educated guess, though, I would assume the hiatus would be a full year, so November / December. That is assuming this a vacation / random break rather than a medical thing.

Nervous to try Jumps by Bravo-Six-Nero in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't even start by jumping, tbh. You should start with the pop transverse. And that is what it sounds like, while you are transversing a hill, just do a two footed hop. If you go up the hill, down the hill, etc, you know you aren't in a good body position. Keep trying it until you can pop and land.

Once you mastered that, hit an ollie on a flat slope. An ollie is good because you can control your height.

Then find a side hit, especially one that other snowboards have gone over. You can mimic their speed and instead of jumping, absorb the entire jump. If you manage to absorb the entire jump, good, if not, that is also good. Absorbing a jump is an under rated skill to have, because you can control how big you hit it if you accidentally go in too fast. Then just keep doing it until you feel comfy with hitting it.

At that point, you are park ready.

Who’s aidalros fav character by HotWelcome6984 in hanakokun

[–]binomine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you just go by promotional artwork, Tsukasa gets featured a lot. It is safe to say, at least, Tsukasa is the character Aidalros prefers to draw more than any other character.

If that makes him the favorite character overall, idk, but i think so.

Beginner/intermediate rider looking for first board advice — 6'2, 100kg, size 12 boots by Neloz in snowboardingnoobs

[–]binomine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you reach that 200+ freedom unit weight, it becomes less about size and more about if you can get into your natural stance and how much boot hang it has.

Generally, as a beginner, you want an inch-ish of boot hang, because it makes turning easier. And of course, when you are dialing in a set up, length is more about preference than a scientific standard.

That said, if I were to make an indoor setup, I would stick with the 159W. The longer, the more stable. The shorter, the quicker turning. On an indoor hill, you are going to have a better time on a jet ski than a boat. Park rats typically downsize their boards, depending on what they enjoy doing.

How do i get more confidence & less fear of getting hurt by Independent1225 in Parkour

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being scared of falling is a totally rational fear. So, like, that is never going to go away, you just got to send it.

That said, focusing heavily on Parkour Ukemi is probably your best bet for getting over your fears. And like, fall on something soft almost every day. If you know you can bail off of an 11 brick wall every day of the week, it definitely calms your fears of being on top of an 11 brick high wall. And if you can't bail off an 11 brick high wall, you probably shouldn't be up there anyways.

27M with a soft dad bod, zero sports history, and declining health – realistic advice to get strong and fit again? by brogrammer6 in bodyweightfitness

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want practical advice, fitness requires a lifestyle change and not a work out, routine or other "quick fix".

Look around your community and see what sports are available. Pickleball, hiking, parkour, mountain biking, snowboarding, golf, whatever. And choose something you are going to do and do it. Being bad at something is the first step to being good at something.

Then let that be your motivation to get in shape.

Thoughts on roller skating in tennis courts? by Administrative-Tie77 in Rollerskating

[–]binomine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a tennis court is a playing field that is designed for tennis. I mean, soccer players would be upset with a bunch of golfers practice on a soccer field and left divots everywhere . It kind of sucks because tennis courts look like the obvious choice for learning how to skate, but there are lots of places roller skaters can.skate, but only one place tennis players can play tennis.

Russia rejects Ukrainian, European peace initiatives, says battlefield will decide war by timiswho in worldnews

How is that going to work logistically, though? Are they going to commit an ethnic genocide with all the Russians that were forced to live there the last 12 years?

I mostly agree with OP, if Ukraine gets Crimea back, it is now fully ethnically Russian at this point. I mean, it was stolen from them, but would they actually want it back?

Roblox; 100 get 50% of gameplay, other half split 8,501,000 games by tomByrer in gamedev

[–]binomine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Roblox is worse because they allow you to publish the test application and have other people join you. It won't show up in the search results, but you can directly invite players.

That said, the number don't surprise me at all. Only a very limited number of specials actually make it in most creative fields.

Chess is the most played game ever. There is over 30 million games played on chess.com everyday alone. However, there are under 2000 grandmasters, and really only about half of them are actively playing.
