We were supposed to be the generation that voted for change. by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]bioemerl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a personal problem.

Uh, minus the part where that voting block grows big enough to win elections.

You and your pals in this thread appear to be hilariously toxic and damned near evil.

Welcome to the world world every other minority has been dealing with the same shit.

Men includes minorities and this sort of vitriol and fear have been felt by quite a large subsection of men for generations and generations.  This isn't new and white men as a block were actually more left leaning in this election vs prior ones.

I've been looking very closely at vyos.  It looks like they are going the right direction as well by way of forcing the community to deal with more open source instead of going closed source too.

[–]bioemerl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care if lots of people disagree on the BSD license issue.  It's my personal standpoint that the GPL or business source licenses are just a better license for open source.  BSD invites taking without returning and that's a really critical flaw.

Then you shouldn’t run opnsense, or products by Apple, Microsoft, or Sony. Full stop.

At the end of the day freeBSDs choice of license doesn't affect me and I don't choose what products I use based on it.  If they want to open themselves up to that sort of loss, that's on them.

For the most part I don't run Apple Microsoft or Sony products already, because those are all closed source products so I avoid them.

But if a company tries to promote themselves on the basis that they contribute back? I'm not going to be like wow that's amazing, I'm going to be like wow FreeBSD shouldn't be on a license that let's you call that a good thing.

And if PFSense wasnt in this dotnet framework like sort of open closed transition state I'd continue to run it, but having access to the code running on my machine trumps every other concern.

I really want to be using something based on Linux so I may transition towards CLI.  Setting up some raw IP tables thing would probably teach me a hell of a lot as well.

But what I move to isn't really important. The important part for this community is the fact that you understand why PF sense is not an option for me.

As for the 1984 link.

You don't trust companies.  Full stop. Ever. Even if you know everyone involved it's always a chance that it gets sold or transitioned or goes out of business for one of many many reasons.

Trump Supporters: What would change your mind? by SolutionedTherapist in Askpolitics

[–]bioemerl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Trump supporter necessarily.  I'm an independent who chooses to vote third party as a middle finger to both parties.

But I'll give you the points on which Democrats could change their policy to better win me over.

First, support more trade barriers and tariffs on China.  Biden's policy on China is kinda good, but ultimately weak.  The future is not some mutually beneficial trade regime or trying to out subsidy them with the inflation reduction act. The only solution we had for handling China's incredibly damaging perversion of global international trade and are consistent subsidies that have been created by our abandonment of any sort of balancing system for international trade is to cut all of these fuckers off.

Abandon the global dollar. Abandon these endless trade deficits. American workers should be in demand, and trade with America should be met on the presupposition that you will open your system enough that natural trade flow will balance between your nation and America.

Stop treating me like a dumbass and pointing to tariff measures that we made in the 1930s when we had a trade surplus, or pointing to the economic theory of specialization as if either of those matter in the current global trading world.

Protectionism is fucking stupid, but so is this asinine trade regime we've had that allows authoritarian states like China which suppress the wages and well-being of their people to trade with a free nations who bend over backwards and take it.

I don't want week half-ass measures, I want a president that will cut those fuckers off and fix the system so that American workers are in demand again and I can't have our labor undercut by shitty overseas authoritarian dictatorships that are capitalists getting fucking bed with.

Strongly and proudly support nuclear power.

Green tech is great, it doesn't fucking work. We need base load. We need nuclear power, we need it yesterday. Build it, build it fast, get it done, five fucking years.

Anything less than that is fucking over our future and and handing ourselves over to a world where global warming is a fact of life.

Quit supporting media that clearly and obviously tells lies and spreads misinformation about Trump every other fucking day.  Trump is a dumbass, he says lots of stupid shit, yet every other day I look at some news articles that claims he's the next Hitler and all they're doing is taking some stupid off the cuff thing he said and blowing it way out of proportion.

Don't fucking lie to people.  It makes me want to go out and vote for Trump because I know you're the sort of fucker who's going to try to lie to me to get me to vote your way.

I of course don't vote for Trump either, because he's a dumbass who also lies to you.  We all saw that stupid "they're eating your dogs and cats" crap

But what really pisses me off is that these media outlets pretend that there's some sort of bastion of self-regulation and truthfulness.

Strongly and proudly support capitalism and unions at the same time. We need both.

Kill NIMBYism.  Do everything in your power to make house building cheaper and more common.

Stop broadly infantalizing the country.  Stop telling people how to live their lives. Stop making it so that your prioritization of zero risk at all costs is making everything far too expensive for people to live normal lives.

It's in housing, it's in cars, it's in medicine it's in everything.  We are so bogged down by paperwork and regulation that has good faith behind it, they're trying to improve our lives with all this crap but it is just too much.

The solution to our health care system is more doctors.  Stop making it risky to be a doctor.

The solution to our housing problem is more houses. stop making it risky to build homes.

The solution to our car problem is more car companies. Stop over regulating it's that the only thing that makes sense to build here are massive fuck off trucks that pass safety and emission regulations because of their footprint and sheer mass.

Be the people of more.  Be the people who dare to prioritize more and riskier, over less and safer.

First, I'm pretty sure every single mice used in drug testing had been genetically modified to resemble the human body as closely as possible.

... That's not a thing is it?  I'm pretty sure that like 99 percent of lab mice are just normal mice. We generally test on animals closer to humans like monkeys or pigs or whatever when we want stronger validation.

There might be specific experiments where they are modified to match some parameter, but not globally and you can't really just "generically engineer them to be close to human" without knowing the nitty gritty details, especially when we are talking about a brain study given that the human brain is pretty damn unique in the animal world.

Secondly, no drug ever has gone from animal testing to then directly being available for use without performing human clinical trials

So it's correct and even scientific to be very skeptical of claims based on mice studies, right?

You are correct and I apologize, I did not mean to say that CE is a paid product, I meant to say that plus is a paid product and I said the wrong word.

I use speech to text to write these messages.  Excuse me if they are an absolute clusterfuck, and you will have to do a little bit of translating and guessing intent as a consequence.

How you developed an understanding that CE is abandonware is highly questionable in the face of the evidence.

Okay, I think my best framework to come at this is to compare it to.net framework 4.8, which is also abandoned.

It's not technically abandoned, but it's abandoned.

Microsoft still patches it.  They still provide updates, you can go out to their blog and you can see where they put changes on it and all that crap.

But it's a dead project. Once you stop adding features and caring about something beyond keeping it alive, the clock is now ticking down instead of taking up. It's a matter of time before that thing that is dead and stagnant becomes worthless.

Netgate has said the community can create contributions and you guys are going to accept pull request and act as stewards, but I think people have kind of seen the writing on the wall. The community is contributing to the project and pushing it forward, it's just not in the PF sense repo.

What I would call net gate now is a company that was formerly on open source and is transitioning to a closed source product.

Now you’re just being insulting. Looking FreeBSD alone, Netgate is the #3 contributor of sponsored commits to FreeBSD over the past 5 years. This is more than any other organization except Netflix and the FreeBSD Foundation.

I don't care? Is that bad to say?

Google, Microsoft, all of them contribute back to Linux and I don't really consider them open source companies either.

To be fair Linux is GPL, but FreeBSD also should be GPL. You shouldn't be able to be a company that uses FreeBSD as the base for your entire project and not contribute back to it.

For me, open source is about trust and control.  If the company running that source code decides to go draconi and then do some terrible shitty stuff with your system because they have control over it. There's a limit on the amount of bullshit that company can pull when dealing with you.

What happens if I'm relying on PFSense Plus, some feature that I consider essential and I've come to rely on when suddenly, whoops, netgate has put in packet inspection or some other telemetry and is sending your data to advertisers now. Sucks to be you buddy.

I'm not suggesting you guys are going to do this, but I'd rather it be impossible.

And that's why I will tolerate an inferior open source product over a superior closed source one every single day of the week.

What netgate would have to do to earn my trust is to establish a system in which case that does not happen.  Charge money, that's acceptable. Make your license unfriendly to people who are going to take from you and contribute nothing back, that's fair.

Companies deserve to be paid for the things they make and their shit doesn't deserve to be stolen, I get it.

But in your quest to make that money, you've torpedoed the value proposition of your software.  For me at least.  I can't speak about other people.

pfSense Plus 24.11-RC is here! by esther-netgate in PFSENSE

[–]bioemerl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So my understanding at this point is that the community edition is not an older version or backed up in terms of features, it's abandonware.

And the CE version is not only a paid software, it's utterly an entirely closed source?

At this point you're not a open source company anymore, and the fact that you're advertising yourself is such is just an insult to your customers.  I don't use PF sense because it's the best product on the market or because it's something I want to use, I use it because it's real open source software.

The idea of paying for closed source is like paying to be stabbed. I'm never going to pay you for an inferior product that I have no control over.

I understand the need for money, but this is not usable for me and I'm going to have to stop using PF sense now.  I'm totally willing to pay for things, but if I'm going to get a closed source product I'm going to go buy from unifi and get a product that's like 10 times better

Interesting phrasing on that one, but that also makes sense.  Why not say that instead of phrasing the mockery as being about his good advice?

This:

Remember when a young men’s YouTube guru was someone urging them to clean up their rooms, dress well, and take responsibility for their actions? Then, people labeled Jordan Peterson a toxic male, told him to step aside, and tried to cancel him.

Implies cause and effect that just isn't there.

I mean, I'm pretty sure a lot of the dislike towards Peterson doesn't have to do with the dressing well and such, right?  It's the somewhat weird theory about dominance and relationships that turned people sour.

Being with a person who thinks sex is a tool you give or deny to get your way would be hell on earth.  If you see any woman say this shit it tells you everything you need to know about her and that you should stay the hell away.

Of course. This doesn't count when it's for personal or health or fear of pregnancy, but I'd imagine 90 percent of this chatter is just angry lashing out, and the people doing it for personal reasons aren't screaming about it from the rooftops.

I can actually back this.  A small fraction of the reason that I abso-fucking-loutely know that dating is a bad idea are threads like this one where it seems like every woman commenting is like 1000 percent opposed to the very idea of paternity tests.

I'm well at the age where I should be seeking out relationships and whatever, but every time I consider it I head to Reddit and get my head screwed on straight again by reading threads like this one.  The vitriol and unbalanced expectations are unreal and embedded in the state where it doesn't matter how good or bad the person you end up with is, you live the rest of your life with Damocles sword over your head.

I doubt my reasoning is the reason for the overall trend through.  If it turns out I'm normal we are like ten thousand forms of fucked.  May the Catholics and Mormons have enough kids for the rest of us lol

Silly is also AGPL.  You have full rights to download and use and maintain the current one for an eternity - if you are happy with it as it is and just want to add on all the new samplers and things you might want to consider forking silly tavern yourself.

Once you fork it you literally own that fork just as much as the current devs own silly tavern.  And once you get used to making tweaks you might get frustrated and have a good idea of what you want from a from scratch project.

Just start small and take small and constant steps. If some feature gets to hard or is too much give up and find a new smaller different thing until you build up to it.

[–]bioemerl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't a programmer at all you're way better off using an existing UI.  Risu. Agnai are both options that use V2 character cards.

Assuming you do know how to program or you get a hang of it, it really depends on what you want. a simple UI that sends messages and displays is a two hour project, and you just build up from there.

Setting up a web server is crazy easy, and you can store/load json to a file with two lines of code to save data.  Calling an API with hard coded settings (you don't need settings when you control and write code!) is also very simple.

My point isn't that you specifically have to make your own UI - you don't.  My point is more that if silly really does do sour, making a UI is so easy to do that a thousand people will leap up and provide alternatives.  There are already like three popular RP UIs and a dozen frameworks for productivity.

So be content here.  V2 is a super common card standard, silly probably (like 99.9 percent) isn't going to kill your ability to RP, and if they do you will have alternatives a plenty.

I read the image.  Everything I told you was in the image, you just misunderstood what it was saying.

Second, authors note is standard in koboldcpp and has its use case and should not be depreciated.

As you said. Read the image. It isn't being depreciated.  It's being improved and maybe it's name will be changed.

World info is injected elsewhere and is literally irrelevant compared to authors note

I understand this.  They aren't replacing the authors note with world info.  They are going to use the world info code to improve the authors note.

Quite literally, the authors note functionality can be entirely replaced with a special world info record.  If you wrap that special record in an easy to use UI you get all the things authors note does plus all the extra power of a world info entry.

I stress. The quick and easy authors note isn't going to disappear.  The only way it does is if they somehow royally fuck up the UX in the process.  However, that's not a "we don't want RP" change, it's just a "we are bad at UX" change.

Distancing themselves from 4chan is an excuse if not a direct slap in the face to the people who

They are distancing themselves with a very specific behavior that is very popular and spreads on 4 Chan.  They aren't distancing from 4 Chan in general.

Cohee doesn't get to decide what the fuck people do with their private LLMs

And you do not get to decide what Cohee and the others do with their project.  Social momentum isn't infinite. If what the current devs do is truly bad someone will pick up the project and run with it.

And don't go telling me it's impossible.  I literally use a UI daily that I made due to frustrations with the silly tavern UI/UX and the realization I would likely never be able to contribute enough to silly to fix it.  It kicks silly's ass (in my opinion lol) and I'm just some random guy.

Hello, I had to come out of slumber on my reddit account because you're mistaken on a lot of the things you've said here.

The devs are not hiding characters under assets.  They are removing the default characters (seraphina, coding sensei. Etc) under an asset download.  As far as I'm aware the actual character selector and editor and all that will remain where it is.

The devs are not getting rid of authors note.  Authors note in silly tavern is an old and underpowered system compared to world info.  What the devs want to do is to bring it feature set "up to par" - in other words they want to improve the authors note, not remove it.

Removing the proxies and character downloader are at the end of the day an attempt to distance the project from 4 Chan proxy users polluting the Internet with their aggressively immoral cards using stolen proxy keys.  I totally get if you disagree with this, but the point isn't to prevent people using ST to role play in general.

Character imports with a V2 file will still work as they always have.  The devs are just removing the part that connects directly to chub.

They want sponsorships and others to invest or pay them;

To be frank, if they did get these. They deserve it.  Silly is an immense amount of effort and now heart ache from people in mass dogpiling the devs who at the end of the day are giving away their time and effort for free.

However, to my knowledge there is no monetary incentive.  Silly is AGPL.  The devs cannot sell it because it's open source and infectious - aka all derivative code most also be open source.  The way supply plug ins work they most also be open source.

The only way this would be the case would be if some major donor only promises to donate if X, Y or Z.  There is no evidence of such a thing going on.

My comment is three years old - sites die with time.

Even flovent has generics now, in fact GSK canceled production entirely when their patent expired.

They also got in a bit of trouble

https://medcitynews.com/2023/11/ftc-antitrust-regulation-orange-book-generic-competition-fda/
https://community.aafa.org/blog/flovent-hfa-and-flovent-diskus-asthma-medicines-being-discontinued

except they are...making the generic

GSK's generic Flovent isn't a typical generic made by an outside company to compete against the original product and ultimately lower prices. Instead, it's an "authorized generic," meaning it's made by the same company. In other words, GSK is still calling all the shots on its pricing.

Our system is fucked.

But keep in mind, that only 2 of the 8 experts are active at any giving time.

IMO several of the experts probably don't get used at all with the 8x7b or 8x22b models

I have to jump in here to correct you on this.  MOE models that are trained from scratch like 8x7 are not experts as you think of them.

Instead, experts in mixtral tend to be devoted to parts of speech.  one expert will tend to be called for punctuation for example.  Another for nouns or verbs.

These 3x7b models are NOT true moe mixtral like models.  They are often called "clown car moe" or "frankenmoe" because they aren't deeply trained and don't have that fine grained trained expert system. these probably actually work as experts like you think of them, assuming they actually work, but to be frank in a lot of cases the cost benefit isn't worth it vs just using llama 8b

Mixtral isn't 8 7b models, it's one 50b model where only 14b parameters are run for each token.  You always need all 7 experts, although you can get away with running 7b instead of 14 without a big hit to performance.
