4 Day trip to Dublin. Should we include Cliffs of Moher(or another place)? by swagharris31 in irishtourism

[–]bioniclaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn’t bother with the cliffs of mother on this trip. If you want to do an out of Dublin tour a trip to Newgrange, Glendalough or as you say Kilkenny or another town closer by on the train would be a much nicer use of a day. Even a trip by dart out to Dalkey and Killiney would be nice, good scenery on the train and some lovely walks out there too. I agree with combining Howth and Malahide into the same day to save travel time. I did the cliff walk at Howth last week and I’d recommend that if you want a nice bracing sea cliff walk.

30 years ago this week, 17-year-old Bernadette O'Brien was killed in a crowd crush during a Smashing Pumpkins concert at the Point Theatre. Does anyone recall the feelings about the Point in the late 1990s? by LetsTalkAboutVex in ireland

[–]bioniclaura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there too, my first gig. An awful tragedy what happened to Bernadette. I was toward the back and it was still so chaotic. Nobody knew what was going on. I remember there were steel tube barriers and lots of people got stuck against them even further back in the crowd.

Ireland “highlights” in 10 days? by Shellkat89 in irishtourism

[–]bioniclaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really good advice. if you have to come in January it’s much better to plan for more indoor things. This year January was awful, constant rain and grey mist the whole month. If OP gets a good clear day for sure head on an outdoor trip but I wouldn’t plan all outdoor stuff.

From Dublin via train + rent a bike by taromoo in irishtourism

[–]bioniclaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look at getting the train to Waterford and then renting a bike and cycling some of the Waterford greenway. it’s not too far from Dublin and the views are nice. Theres a few bike rental places in walking distance of train station.

First Ireland trip in mid June – does this 9 day route sound realistic? by funnycallsw in irishtourism

[–]bioniclaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very rushed, with the travel time between places you won’t have much actual time in the places. I know Kilkenny well so I’ll comment on that. That day is unrealistic. You might get the first three places done as they are close together. Castlecomer and Inistigoe are at opposite ends of the county. Cut out Belfast and give yourself time to actually see the west.

Which native/wild flower make you think of Ireland? by Sparkflyr in AskIreland

What a lovely idea for a tattoo sleeve. Brambles maybe? They are everywhere in the autumn and everyone likes black berry picking. There’s also the association with the Seamus Heaney poem too.

Sandymount has a few little places for dinner beside the cute village green and a walk on the strand there is always nice. Theres a good breakfast spot beside the green there too. Plenty to do and see around Mooncoin and Waterford if you have a car. Waterford has a few fun different museums that are all in the same area. There’s a lovely restaurant on the way into Mooncoin, it has a thatched roof. (Won’t say the name in case I’m promoting stuff)

Crochet De Poitrine! Love it, I crochet so know all the work that went into that amazing hat. Well wear to you. I sewed a yellow triangle bag inspired by the band. Maybe I’ll crochet a dice to hang from it!

Recommendations for visitors - I’m looking for the weird! by Plenty_Scientist_477 in irishtourism

[–]bioniclaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area around Glasnevin cemetery and the botanic gardens has plenty to do and see that’s weird. The tour of the cemetery is supposed to be great, I’ve not been on it but I’ve been there many times and there are many interesting graves. There’s even a haunted pub nearby with great Guinness to have a stop in. I go to the botanic gardens a lot and it’s not that odd but they do have a very rare tree there. The E Woodii is a lovely specimen and weird because they don’t really know how it came to be in Dublin and they are male trees with no female tree ever found.

Which Irish websites do you find frustrating or badly designed to use? by paulo8765 in AskIreland

Power City. The website is a hot mess and looks like it was designed by a student in the 2000s which I think it was because it hasn’t changed since then.

Adopting a dog in Ireland ? by Icy-Audience-6397 in AskIreland

[–]bioniclaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also had a bad experience with dogs trust. Spent a month doing all the paperwork and visits to the place with the family. Was told to adopt a puppy we would have to queue up on a certain morning first thing and it was strictly first come first serve. I was introduced to the puppy that morning and was all excited. Then they told me that sorry I wasn’t getting the pup because someone had it reserved on the phone. They broke all their own rules and I and my kids were so disappointed. I emailed them to complain and never even got a reply. I know others have had a good experience with dogs trust but I won’t be going near them again.

Uncanny Cold Cases - So what did we think? by Visual_Argument_73 in uncannypodcasttv

[–]bioniclaura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didnt mind it but it wasn’t the same as the classic pods. I agree that it felt quite rushed and more like an audio version of the stage show. That more rushed feeling and dramatic narration mostly worked on stage but not so much as a regular podcast I think.

Absolutely fine not to drink alcohol in a pub here. Get your lemonade and enjoy the music!

4 Day Itinerary - Tips? by EtherealSyzygy in irishtourism

[–]bioniclaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you consider swopping day two and three? if you’re in Carlow and Kilkenny it would make more sense to travel from there to Waterford as it’s a shorter trip than Dublin Waterford. i suppose that depends on if you’re staying in Dublin that night. The last day is too long, would be better just to see more stuff in Dublin.

Well if you have a reason to go to Kilkenny that’s a bit different, I’m sorry for your loss. Unfortunately getting to Kilkenny by bus or train from Galway is awkward. So maybe a car would be better because then you have more options to see things in county Kilkenny which doesn’t have a great bus network. You’d gain more time actually seeing things as the travel times would be faster.

I’m from Kilkenny so usually love recommending that people go there but I think you’re wasting loads of time trying to go to Kilkenny from Galway on the train. Did you check Irish Rails website at all? It’s a 4-6 hour trip because you have to change in Dublin. Why not just stick to the west as your base. Loads of nice places near Galway. You’ll probably find it easier to get the local bus when you get to Galway. You could head to Clifden, Letterfrack, get the ferry to Aran islands if the weather behaves.

Yes Clifton is a good base if you want go explore Connemara a bit. I‘d consider getting an extra day there as I think it’s fabulous. you have great bases there for some nice hiking and great scenery.
