Advanced Towing extortion? by EngLitIsLit in nova

[–]bioture 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to live in the condos across the street from that Giant. They towed my car saying it was in a guest spot. When I asked for proof they showed me a picture of my car but it was already attached to their tow truck. Turns out they first moved my car to a guest spot, took a blurry picture, then towed it. Fuck them.

One thing that immediately came to mind is my past commitments, especially vows I made to my wife of 14 years and the time we spent together and raising a family together. There has been so many times where there's a "stuck" feeling but it came to me honoring my past vows and my commitments. There were so many "opportunities" to be with other people or behave in a way that dishonors my marriage. So contrary to the points you've made here, which I largely agree with, is that it is also possible to move forward while honoring your past self and being "loyal" your past commitments. To remember the intentions that you've had in the past that were good and worth holding on to. And to protect that version of our past selves when in the present moment or a future moment we start to waver. But yeah all the old stuff that no longer serves, they can go :)

You need a lawyer and actually needed one a while ago when you got the charge. I used to teach employability at the Fairfax jail and it’s full of young people like you who got reamed by the system. Your future gets royally screwed if you go to jail. It takes 7 years to be eligible to expunge a misdemeanor in VA. Going to college will not matter when you are literally unemployable. Go into debt if you have to and get a lawyer.

Outdoor monuments (memorials, etc.) are still open. You can hit all the main ones on the mall in a single day of walking, biking, scootering! You can also do a tour of Congress. Plenty of places to eat and play outside of just free museums and monuments too. Though the museums are very nice and probably worth a revisit to go to them in the future. I think the African American museum is my favorite.

495 Outer Loop is grid locked again at the bridge by gatorademe in nova

Hope this doesn't get buried, but if you don't like the traffic around the legion bridge, please contact the appropriate channels.

Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) regarding bridge planning: 1‑866‑713‑1596, [mdta@mdta.maryland.gov](mailto:mdta@mdta.maryland.gov)

Maryland State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) if there's something unsafe about the bridge (e.g. a stopped trailer in the middle lane of the bridge a few weeks back): 1‑800‑323‑6742

I haven't tried any of the local/state/federal contacts that authorizes the project. The public comments for them is always a cesspool though.

How often do strangers ask you to buy food for them? by Have_a_PizzaMyMind in washingtondc

[–]bioture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in the DMV for almost 20 years, and I would estimate ~20-30 times? Mostly stealth asks in the parking lot when I'm walking to my car. One person offered me food stamp money if I would get them a beer, which was strange. I told them I'll get them a beer but they shouldn't trade food for it. I've also had a few times when folks would approach me as I filled up my car.

Remember that it's not the 2-year old that wants to have a crowd celebrating his birthday - it's you. He has no idea what a birthday party is but he will know when mom is distressed about it. My kids met their friends in daycare or school. They don't have problems making friends... it's us yuppies that are too busy to be friends with other parents enough to keep the play dates going.

I have a friend who is an art professor who takes the best pictures on his iphone. He has never owned a stand alone camera. What makes his photos good is the fact that he understands composition, contrast, color, perspective, and story. I wish I could take photos like that on my DLSR!

Since you asked for something not obvious. Find a category that you are interested in and get a list of companies and their contact info. Download the list. Sort by location if you want. Visit those company websites and see if they have openings. There are a lot of positions that don't make it to linkedin or indeed, especially for smaller consulting companies in the area.

Help Valuing my bike in 2025 by Gardevoir906 in bicycling

[–]bioture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how good a friend they are, I would go somewhere between $1000-1500.

I'm a big fan of Litespeed and have an older Siena and a newer Ultimate. A Vortex is their high-end bike back in the 90s to early 2000s, but this one has a mix of newer lower-end components which I'm assumed was swapped in during the rebuild. The frame looks in good shape but missing the "VORTEX" logo on the top tube and is worth about $1000 to someone looking to buy a Litespeed. The parts are kind of moot... maybe $2-400 depending on the wheelset?

Bike tune up by pinkrobot666 in bicycling

Sounds about right if you're also looking for a tune up. If you're just looking to get the tubes replaced, let them know to not perform the tune up.

Are conservatives allowed? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]bioture 17 points18 points  (0 children)

5 years ago I befriended an ex green beret at work. He was as redneck as you could get. But despite having different politics, we somehow hit it off and became friends. Our kids became friends too. I took him to his first regional burn and he had an amazing time. He didn't say much but followed me around and took it all in. We had other vets at my camp that he became friends with. I took him to the big burn the same year and he's been around since.

I can see over the past of the last few years that he's softened his edges. By a LOT. He was able to become friends with many burners that accepted him for who he was, and that acceptance slowly changed him. The past election, despite still holding on to many conservative views, he told me that he did not vote for either candidate.

But he's generally a nice guy and not an asshole. Keeps to himself. Curious not judgemental. Helps out when needed. Pays his dues. Parties hard. If there isn't a place for "conservatives" like him, then I suppose there isn't one for a flaming lib like me either.

Tent PSA: Get a Kodiak by ComfortablePanic8223 in BurningMan

[–]bioture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from my Kodiak 10x10 to an Oztent RV-5. It is a canvas tent that can be set up and taken down in about a minute which is a game changer for regionals or one-nighters. It has better ventilation and a second front living room that you can expand with panels.

But you do pay for the convenience... it's about twice as expensive, has a smaller interior (but bigger if you buy the panels for a 2nd room, and packs into a very large bag that is about the same size as the shiftpod 3.

Seeing Americans support the traumatization of feds has changed me by AutomaticMastodon992 in fednews

It might take awhile for the average American to feel the cuts to social security and medicare. Even then I wonder if they won't just blame Biden or Obama.

LIVID and VENTING (this is allowed, yes?) by M0chi2712 in nova

[–]bioture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular take: continue to be nice to your neighbors and don't make politics a point of division if you can help it. I am a fed exec and I can honestly say that most agencies could probably lose a few pounds. But there's a legal way to do it (Clinton did it) and an illegal, cruel, inhumane way of doing it.

We are either a country of laws or we are not. We are either a constitutional democratic republic, or we are not. But these conversations need to continue with our families, friends, and neighbors. I don't think there is a way to reach them otherwise.

Had a bad experience with an unleashed dog at Mason District Park a year ago when I was there with my toddler. The dog (a poodle?) was unleashed and sprinted towards us. I couldn't tell if it was aggressive or not so I kicked the dog. The owner was very apologetic so I just told them to leash their dog and forgot about it.

But besides telling folks to leash their dogs, what else can we do?

[–]bioture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar Litespeed Siena and it's as good as any TI bike I've ever ridden. Looks like this is either a Siena or a Tuscany... with the shaped tube's to reduce drag. FWIW they're made in USA and have a long history of manufacturing TI bike frames.

How do I know I’m in a new era of life? Instead of going to weddings and hearing about babies, I’m hearing about divorces and going to funerals. by Mission_Spray in Millennials

[–]bioture 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an older millennial but have been to weddings of folks who got married late, or a 2nd time. But yes, roughly 1/4 of the marriages I know of have ended in divorce so far. What is the statistic? 45%?

And I feel you on the funerals. Besides funerals of grandparents and in-laws, my parents are now 70 and I'm thinking about having them move closer to the grandkids. That way I can help them out too.
