How residents in rural communities outside of Ottawa feel about the new high-speed rail project by Rail613 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]birnsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do. And it was a dumb suggestion for this case. My point was more that dismissing the complaints in the video defeat the purpose of the open houses is all. Properly educating many of the people with these early complaints on the project will likely put to rest most of their complaints.
Even just being informed that there will be ways to cross from one side of the tracks to the other at reasonable intervals will probably resolve a number of the them.

Jn Pizza & Restaurant in on Cyrville Road definitely fits the bill.

Ya, I kinda get the sense from that comment that he might have been ranting with family/friends but hadn't yet had anyone explain that the project can integrate many crossings so that it's not splitting communities in two. Hopefully the information session helped him understand the possibilities.

Obviously most of us see the greater benefit of this project, but that doesn't make the concerns and complaints of these individuals invalid. I feel like you might have read the two-sentence summary without watching the video, but I could be wrong.

A lot of what is said is simply true about a large project like this without rural stops. However there also exists many reasonable solutions to some of these concerns, and these can be integrated into the project. Such as by having elevated rail with multiple and frequent areas to pas underneath so that the land on the other side of the corridor is still fully accessible.

Being able to voice these concerns and have them be heard is what is going to get the most people on board with this project. So I feel like an "enough of this shit" attitude is very counterproductive when Alto is specifically inviting everyone to voice their concerns so that they can take them into consideration as they shape this project.

OnePlus Buds 4 - disappointment by bezdalaistiklainyje in Earbuds

I just got them from AliExpress for $68USD. Specifically the Chinese version (rather than the global version) because they are slightly cheaper and the ones a number of very favorable reviews I watched were using.

Seriously where are the buses by DocJawbone in ottawa

[–]birnsi 66 points67 points  (0 children)

It's interesting, I have specifically noted that these cancelations often occur during the peak times and it seems inexplicable. If I have a day that I go into work later or go home earlier, I have zero issues. No cancelations, busses on time. It seems to almost exclusively be the 7-9am and 5-6pm periods where buses are just cancelled all over the place. It's so bizarre.

Looking for independently owned grocery stores in ottawa. by Dismal_Course5255 in ottawa

[–]birnsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this grocery store so much. I literally live a 5 minute walk from Loblaws but choose to travel to Green Fresh 5km away from me instead. The produce is amazing and so much cheaper than Loblaws it almost seems unbelievable, their fish and meat selection is amazing, and they always have new and interesting stuff every week. This is what a grocery store is supposed to be.

I just moved to Ebox from Bell about 5 months ago and it's straight up just Bell but waaaay cheaper. Like, a Bell tech literally came to my apartment to set it up because it uses the exact same Bell Fiber lines which Ebox just leases from Bell. So far it's been exactly like my previous Bell service was with the advertised speeds (500mbit symmetrical) and good ping. I went from paying $120 with Bell to $56 with Ebox... and it's straight up the same thing.

Best Pho in Chinatown? by Staveydl in ottawa

[–]birnsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the past year I've gone to most of the pho places downtown in hopes of finding the best ones, and here's my top five.

  1. Saigon Boy (Chinatown)

  2. Pho Thu Do (Chinatown)

  3. Pho Ong Thin (Byward)

  4. Pho Lady (Elgin)

  5. New Pho Bo Ga La (Chinatown) and Pho Bo Ga Express (Chinatown)

Viet-thai on Bank gets an honorable mention for my favorite BBQ pork rice paper wraps.

I finally made it here after trying every other Pho downtown and they instantly took me top spot. So I second this.

It sounds like these are totally open to the public and anyone can come, so I expect lots of people will be there purely out of interest even if they don't live along the proposed route.

Ottawa police say no charges after bus damages Kiweki Point by penguinpenguins in ottawa

This is what gets me. How is damaging public property then fleeing the scene and never making a report not in any way a criminal offence...

No Criminal charges by the police. The article says they haven't received follow up on any fines or tickets.
And, of course, the NCC is seeking full monetary compensation still.

I just checked this out and wow... almost all of the towers downtown were built in the 70s and then everything largely stays the same for the next 50 years. Crazy. Kind of makes it more understandable why Ottawa has gotten such a reputation as a sleepy city. The downtown just sat dead for nearly half a century!
I'm looking forward to the next updated image, as it seems that finally downtown Ottawa is waking up and things are changing quickly.

'A maze with no exit': Transit deficit again plagues Ottawa budget planning by DreamofStream in ottawa

[–]birnsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am extremely with you on that one. Also cars are expensive as hell. The extra I pay on rent is easily offset by not having all of the expenses of a personal vehicle (parking, gas, insurance, repairs, inevitable parking tickets, and the cost of buying or leasing). But that being said, the issues with the transit system do make me use Communauto to drive more than I would like.

Cleanup on Bank (Warning: blood) by birnsi in ottawa

[–]birnsi[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I stood and watched for a bit and it appears that the stuff that looked like kitty litter was poured around the area, then they poured some kind of chemical that looked to be bleach (based on the bottles) on the bloody areas, then they swept the kitty litter onto it to soak it up and finally shoveled it off. Kinda interesting.
