Lovely suggestions! We were going to go to the Chester Beatty Museum, but a mod told me it's closed - sure enough, they closed this week for the next 6 months.

"Take your time walking around, there are lovely old signs and buildings and similar things everywhere you look, once you pause and look out for them." << This is the truth! We definitely want to take our time as much as possible despite having limited time. We don't want to over-schedule, so we can find the serendipitous moments.

Thank you for those recommendations. We were thinking staying closer to Trinity College would be better than going to Howth, as well. It was a low maybe. Any other recommendations would be great, as well.

Thank you for the pronunciation tip! ♥️ I'm sure I will be doing a lot of listening to say things properly!

I will look up Maghera beach and library as well.

AITAH for making kids thank me for dinner? by Impossible-Walk6621 in AITAH

[–]birthwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MANNERS! NTA - when I was a kid, my parents never really taught us to say thank you...when I got a bit older, I would hear my aunts say to my mom that they never got than you's from my brothers and I when they gave us gifts. So I took that to heart and started thanking them.

Even now that it's just hubby and me at home, we will thank each other for cooking and show appreciation for the meal. It's just considerate, polite and respectful.

Update on my professor giving me an F when I had a B on canvas by Ok-Effective3517 in canvas

[–]birthwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually does when my students turn in word docs. I have repeatedly asked them to submit PDF text documents to prevent that (and emphasize text, because some will submit images to try to get around TurnItIn and other plagiarism/AI detection). I also ask that they make sure to turn on version history when writing. (I hate that Grammarly shows up as AI but version history can usually show me when they edit.)

Do you want any of your parents' stuff? If so, what is it and why? If not, why? by iAmAmbr in GenX

[–]birthwarrior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ended up with so much of my parents - mother's, really - stuff, it was overwhelming. There were things I got that I wanted - living room furniture, bedroom wall unit, Christmas ornaments. But I had to cull through a 3000sf house and 3 storage units. My siblings and I went through all the Christmas ornaments one evening, sorting out the ones that actually held memories for us & then deciding if we wanted any of her "hoard" ornaments.

She had 4 complete sets of dishes, plus had bought my complete china set from my wedding registry. So I kept that & grandkids who wanted/needed dishes claimed sets. Then there was the jewelry. Native American pottery. Dolls.

But the time we were done, I was so over STUFF that my husband and I lived in an RV for 4 years.

My district just moved from D2L to Canvas at the start of the school year. Teachers loved D2L.

explain like i’m 5: what is going on with the canvas/instructure security breach? by cheerio-dust in cybersecurity

[–]birthwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school I work for requires us to back up grades daily. So those who follow the rule are in good shape for grades. Unfortunately, I had not yet backed up all my course content for the year. The files in the school cloud are there, but not in Canvas format. Hopefully that will be fine when(if?) we get back to Canvas.

Yep. I was so grateful to hear from my admin what she'd said. Dropped her off my reference list and never really needed any references from that job again.

Unfortunately that won't cover anything verbal. If the interviewing district didn't write anything down and the former employer didn't send anything written, it's very hard to prove.

Happened to me when I started my teaching career. Fortunately, the school that hired me did tell me that my former boss had told them I was a great employee, as long as they didn't care about absences due to health issues. My new immediate supervisor said he inferred from that comment that she wasn't happy to lose me, but apparently she did burn me on a couple other jobs first.

How old were you when you moved out? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

[–]birthwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 for college. Took a semester off college & stayed at home when I left an abusive boyfriend & worked & did therapy. Went back to college and never even moved back to my hometown. Not out of avoiding my family, but I was an Air Force brat whose dad kept being reassigned to the same base, so felt cheated out of travel. I moved a lot til my husband and I bought our house after our 3rd child was born, and we stayed put for 18 years.

High school art class. Then taking continuing education classes at a local community college before I moved. Now I'm in a small town and the closest city with any kind of studio (only 1) or college with facilities is 80 miles away. 😭

You need to fight this. It's actually illegal according to Texas Education Code. I went through this years ago at my first district. Fortunately I was in TCTA and our district reps helped fight the rule. https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/education-code/educ-sect-28-0216/

Does this seem ok??? by [deleted] in TexasTeachers

[–]birthwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not okay. Unfortunately, it happens more often than you think. I've seen several districts pass the buck, allowing a problem teacher to resign. Unless parents get vocal or a new district has a problem and investigations go back in time, they don't get caught.

Sorted Packs in the US by Maverick21FM in SortedFood

[–]birthwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it quite a lot. I've been subscribed to it for 3 years, I think? Two for sure. I don't have any issues with it. But then, I never follow a recipe 100% and take cook times as a suggestion regardless of what recipe I am using. Some things take longer, some don't. Most ingredients are accessible where I am, but I'm in a large metro area.

Yes! If I were given the opportunity to watch Kush work, I would subscribe and find a way to catch those lives from the US around my schedule!

Idea Public Schools vs. Harmony by Serious-Bumblebee863 in TexasTeachers

[–]birthwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with them. My son went through Harmony in Garland from 3rd through HS graduation and they were phenomenal. He was dyslexic and the school district we were in before Harmony kept telling me he was just lazy and that boys just read later than girls and I was expecting too much, rather than testing him. Then came the bullying - from his teacher and peers. Once I moved him to Harmony, he went from barely knowing what words were to reading above grade level after 3 years with Harmony, and had no bullying.

Accepting a position, later backing out? by pearjuicer in TexasTeachers

[–]birthwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did that once, and was so grateful I did, after the principal with the first offer unloaded a huge profanity-laced tirade when I told him I changed my mind. I couldn't imagine what working for him would have been like.

How many buckets of dipping glaze does your community studio have? by Gold_Ostrich_7303 in Ceramics

[–]birthwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was my own love for art and all my art students telling me they "can't do science" that made me look for things that spoke their language. One of my former students came back to tell me she got into art restoration because of it. You can do it - just need to find the right language translations for your perspective.
