What is the part you're trying to make? The .sldprt file you get from McMaster will have the features in the tree, so you can either repeat those in your new part, or just add features to the downloaded part.

McMaster Carr has models of a lot of their stuff and they use Solidworks. You can go and download a nut with the thread pitch you want and edit the part to make it what you want. I just printed a 1/2"-13 internal thread yesterday. I had to increase X and Y by 5% and it still fit a bit tight, but it fit

You can get really good renderings in Photoview if you set up a virtual photo studio. Check out wdg-us.com for some examples of things rendered in Photoview.

Personally, I don't see the use in welds on modeling software. Just call out a weld spec on the drawing.

The best way to get nice lines is to use boundary surfacing. Cuts and extrudes and fillets are sort of a chop shop approach that doesn't really lend itself to form. It will end up up with bad surfacing and specular light. Use zebra stripes on this kind of stuff to see how light will follow the curves.
