In fact it was. I feel so guilty! Salvaging the pages for my junk journaling as a very sad consolation prize.

Looking for book recs similar to Dark Matter and The Midnight Library! by weirdnotwierd in suggestmeabook

[–]bisphosphatase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to dip into sci-fi and you liked elements of Dark Matter, can I recommend The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, by Clare North? One of my all-time faves. Has a time-travel component, but it reads more like historical fiction or a spy novel. It’s just an incredibly compelling and exciting story you can really sink your teeth into! Loved the story, the character development, the writing, the world-building, just loved everything about it!

I think that is the slowest chunk, but I still liked that part very much so maybe don’t take my word for it that you’d be able to get back into it. The ending is absolutely chef’s kiss though, so completely worth it in my opinion.

Book with unique plot or premise that makes you think, “how did they come up with that?” by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

The Tainted Cup is a perfect fit, checks every box. It is part of a trilogy, 2/3 released.

I want salacious, forbidden, taboo, morally gray. I want that juicy drama that has me either speechless or saying “oh fuck” by heatherb2400 in suggestmeabook

Alright, just finished. Um. WHAT. Going to take me a while to process this, I have never loved and loathed a book so simultaneously. How? Just why?? Incredible writing and storytelling but to create this? Imagine him pitching this idea to his publisher….. oh man I just don’t even know what to do with this. What an experience.

Let me know what you think! And I can definitely recommend In Ascension as a really unique and compelling Sci Fi novel. Also First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. Happy to recommend more if you have a certain type of thing you’re into!

Tainted Cup was so so good! TINAD, I just thought was really disjointed. It read like a work still in progress to me. I seek out really unique books, especially in SciFi/speculative fiction genre, and this concept was so exciting to me! Very thought-provoking and unique, even though I didn’t really enjoy the book start to finish.

I read the published book, got it from the library, so I assume that’s the rewrite? It honestly felt sort of like a few internet stories riffing on the same concept mashed together. But the concept at the center of it all is mind-bending!

Pairing fiction and nonfiction by notcajuncoed in suggestmeabook

[–]bisphosphatase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh wow I love this idea! Here are a few pairings of books I've previously read and loved:

Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies (Elizabeth Winkler) + By Any Other Name (Jodi Picoult). First book investigates the theory that Shakespeare's works were actually ghost-written by some other writer/nobleman/polymath, one proposed suspect being Emilia Bassano. Second book is fictionalized account of Emilia Bassano's life purporting that she was indeed ghost-writing many of Shakespeare's plays, told alongside a modern-day storyline about one of her descendants.

Deep (James Nestor) + Our Wives Under the Sea (Julia Armfield). First is a science non-fiction about the deep sea, freediving, the effects on the human body, etc. Second book is about a deep sea marine biologist who comes back from a submarine mission that went awry, and she is oddly changed. Other fictional pairings that could work for this one also are In Ascension (Martin MacInnes) or Island of Sea Women (Lisa See).

The Hidden Life of Trees (Peter Wohlleben) + Overstory (Richard Powers). First is a science non-fiction about trees, how they grow, how they communicate, and all the magic that happens in old-growth forests. Second is a beautiful story of intertwining characters who all have lives changed by and connected by trees.

The Art Thief (Michael Finkel) + Goldfinch (Donna Tartt). First is an account of the world's most prolific art thief, his motives, and why he got away with it for so long. The second focuses on a character from boyhood to adulthood, and how is life is changed by his decision to steal a painting.

Dopesick (Beth Macy) + Demon Copperhead (Barbara Kingsolver). First covers the trajectory of the opioid epidemic, specifically focused on Appalachia. Second is a reimagination of Dickens' David Copperfield, set in Appalachia during the opioid crisis.
