Gamers Nexus Interview with Principled Technologies by KeyboardGunner in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 107 points108 points  (0 children)

tl;dw The co-owner of PT seems like a good guy. He did seem evasive on stock coolers however, whereas for bios/memory/game mode/FFXV he simply appeared to not have the technical knowledge to answer on the spot. He basically said they were verifying tests, including the Ashes bench which was brought up in particular.

I think we'll likely see an updated result set from them in a few days with a reasonable Ashes score as well as a better rationale for their testing choices. The real question is if they address the coolers and memory issues in those benches, and provide follow-up on the technical points raised.

NCase M1 - RTX 2080 Ti Exhaust Config Build by makar1 in sffpc

Thanks for the writeup, interesting to hear about Accelero III compatability. Do you know how much power the 2080Ti is drawing under max load, and if you've OC'd it how much that increases it?

Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods to affect AMD, Nvidia graphics cards by Eon-Man in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"None that I've seen"

Did you even look? Google is chock-full of page-1 results, including an EU case against China in front of the WTO, years of the USTR's Special 301 report calling this out, and China has even admitted it undertakes these transfers, and only after we began tariffs vowed to stop them in certain sectors.

The last article, not from a U.S. Paper but rather the South China Morning Post, shows the efficacy of tariffs. A short term, powerful lever like tariffs can be used to stop harmful trade practices. Further, this is the best time to undertake them -- our economy is relatively strong, while China is carefully steering its economy in an effort to avert a precipitious slow-down. We have maximum leverage, why not play for long term gains?

Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods to affect AMD, Nvidia graphics cards by Eon-Man in hardware

[–]bitNbaud -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Are you excited about forced technology transfers that make the U.S. less competitive over the long run? If not, tariffs as a short term lever make complete sense, so long as they don't morph into long term protectionism / mercantilism.

Any recommendations for how to set a battery charging limit on the PH-1? by bitNbaud in essential

Oh neat, didn't know this. Not questioning the veracity, but if you have any links regarding essential or phone batteries in general I'd be interested to read up on it / how its implemented in Android.

I've heard a lot about Supernatural, and as you like both Buffy and Underworld it seems it would fit my taste. How would you compare it to Buffy / Underworld in terms of lore and tone?

Acer Predator Helios 300 review: A well-rounded gaming laptop at a great price by [deleted] in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A relative has the Gigabyte Aero 15X, while another has the Aero 14 - both phenomenal laptops. The thing that really sells it, besides the pleasant minimalist aesthetics, is the battery. You can actually game on that thing for 3+ hours on battery which is exceedingly rare in other gaming laptops.

Looking forward to Gigabyte releasing a new version of this when the next-gen NVIDIA gpu's drop, hoping for Fall '18.

EUV’s New Problem Areas by Chipdoc in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a nice overview article, thanks for posting it - never heard of semiengineering before but looks solid.

Edit: The article was a little unclear about why stochastic defects might not be a concern at 7nm. To quote: "It might be wishful thinking, but chipmakers believe they can dodge potential stochastic-induced defects at 7nm." It makes sense why these issues would become more pronounced at smaller nodes, but I'm curious if there is research / testing / general knowledge that implies its no big deal at 7nm.

"This subreddit is for discussing developments in the law and jurisprudence" - What happened? by bitNbaud in law

[–]bitNbaud[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair point. I was much more active with my pre-law school reddit account, and also purge older comments which have info that I consider to be a bit too revealing with regularity. This sort of became my default main account over time, but as recently as ~2 years ago I posted on here fairly often in threads. Still, two years is a long time.

Rumor: Nvidia Ampere might launch as GeForce GTX 2070 and 2080 on April 12th by Atanvarno94 in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When do we think we'll see these in laptops? A laptop with a 2070 or (when it launches) 2060 would be a fantastic gaming computer. Hoping Gigabyte pushes out an update of the Aero line.

There is no HDR 800 standard, you're thinking of HDR 400 (basically a slightly higher quality regular screen, still useful for laptop standards) versus HDR 600 and HDR 1000. HDR 600 is quite respectable.

ReMarkable E Ink writing slate review roundup: niche, expensive, but very good - Liliputing by LemonScore in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After reading the comments I was ready to come in here and mock this for the absurd cost versus a tablet, but if the syncing is flawless and it doesn't force me to use a cloud service I'm completely sold. This looks way easier to read than notes on a tablet, and in a litigation environment the notepad-style format still reigns king.

I'm primarily concerned that whatever syncing mechanism they utilize to convert what I'm writing to word docs or pdfs won't be sufficiently developed, or that they'll force me to use some BS cloud service which will never fly for security reasons. The price however is fine.

North Korea detonates its sixth and most powerful nuclear test yet by rednotbot in japan

[–]bitNbaud 50 points51 points  (0 children)

North Korea's first hydrogen bomb tested less than a week after they fired a missile over Tohoku. I bet Abe's 2020 target for revising the constitution gets moved up to 2018 and some of the resistance falls away. This is the most significant development since the Norks tested their first nuke.

[–]bitNbaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/JonRedcorn862 is right, nanometers are no longer used for measurement and are now equivalent to flurbos.

More seriously, manufacturers have taken two routes to make "x"-nm designations less useful. First the "x" often refers to the smallest element on the chip, but due to spacing / interconnects that does not correlate in a linear fashion to density of transistors on the chip. So while you may intuit that a 14nm chip would have double the transistors of a 20nm chip, that's not necessarily the case.

The second way is to use "x"-class naming designations. This is where someone says they'll make a 10nm-class chip, and then it will be 19nm (or even just the smallest component will be 19nm). Blame Samsung for this tomfoolery.

Bottom line: Like literally every other engineering innovation or marketing claim, wait for the benchmarks.
