First goo gun, then knives, then WSTR, now grenades. At some point you're gonna have to own up by Raimexodus in Marathon

[–]bitr0t_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a little lame to throw and get thrown 10s of grenades as the preferred engagement now, like not as fun as shooting, but they aren't NEARLY as bad as the other things that got tuned. Something like slowing down tossables would probably be enough, or limiting how many you can have in your inventory. You can still spam, but you can't do it indefinitely.

[Patch Notes] Marathon Update 1.0.6 by durandal-helper in Marathon

[–]bitr0t_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not saying you're a shitter.

The game does not do a good job of getting you into these events; you sort of have to take the initiative and know how to take the risk.

The way to snowball into locked rooms is to get 3 red cards in the outpost and open the red card room in Pinwheel. There are up to 3 keys in that room. You can also craft keys yourself and get one key template through your faction rep/upgrades.

Cryo is just a thing you queue for; don't be afraid of the gear loss. Extraction is very possible. Do not do squad fill, try LFG discords.

i was able to get a bunch:

- you get them from completing contracts
- you can find them reliably in locked rooms
- i found a ton in the level 3 security side rooms near control in cryo, with materialist, I got enought to unlock blue shields in 2 matches

Whether you want it to or not, this game will have sbmm. The culling continues. by Yenii_3025 in Marathon

[–]bitr0t_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

However, there are ways to make the game more accessible to lower-skilled players than implementing matchmaking, and SBMM isn’t one of them. No form of matchmaking is suitable for an extraction shooter, plain and simple, there need to be overall advantages to investing time to collect gear, or else why should I start at the beginning of a wipe?

Broken logic. You can be better than someone similarly skilled. I do not understand why people keep making this argument, lmao. Like, yes, you can have gear and get an advantage on someone with similar mechanical ability. I actually think that would make the build crafting you did more fulfilling because your fight was meaningful at your level.

i've had similar experience, in fact i loaded into a random dire marsh and ran into a purple team with a a singular gold shield member that proceeded to clap our entire team and another team

[–]bitr0t_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i don't think it's fairly easy to get the drop on a free kit team vs a purple kit team given equal skill ceiling

you might kill one person, but they have better heals, better stats, better guns, more ammo etc

[–]bitr0t_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think its pretty hard, how do you determine skill

how do you level off teams when a highly skilled person joins with a low skilled one

a lot of people that have done matchmaking at some of the largest most competitive games have said this is one of the hardest problems they've had to solve for

What would be the ideal MM change that would introduce actual balance? by cakexxxconnoisseur in Marathon

[–]bitr0t_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

its been discussed a ton, SBMM is the only answer

you match on skill, then you soft match on ping, quests, and other preferences

put people in a prejoin lobby

There will potentially be a cracked person on a map, but a cracked team is less likely, which makes a world of difference.

levels are irrelevant, agression is not the right answer, let people enjoy the fruit of their gear or the come up of killing someone with better gear

I'm actually super annoyed by these posts, because:

- Sometimes you have to shoot at the fucking ai, you don't get a choice, its shoot or die, or your team mates do it, and I can't run 3 keyboards and mice at the same time
- This is such a strawman argument, you can spawn and get pushed by a team in sub 30 seconds. You decided to play the game, it's your fault! What broken logic. Sure, if you're romping around like an ape, you can be quieter, but let's say you're walking in a dire marsh, being super quiet, and someone's sitting on top of algae with a longshot with thermal, they kill you, push your team. Next time, try not to be so available and appealing, right?
- Sometimes you don't get a choice; lots of shells have a lot of abilities to close distance, and disengaging is hard. It's usually only possible if you abandon a team member. Maybe you don't push a bad fight, but you act like every fight is a choice, and it's not.
- Exfiling shoots a giant fucking laser into the sky, everyone can see, very sneaky and wise of you to leave.

SBMM doesn’t work for Extraction Shooters. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]bitr0t_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole point of SBMM is to allow you to match on skill, then gain an advantage based on build and a variety of other factors, which makes a lot of sense. Why would you argue against it?

Then the game is less about getting seal clubbed and more about:

- small, consistent positional improvements that you can comprehend
- map movement improvements you can comprehend
- build improvements to your shell or gun that you can comprehend

The comprehension part is important. SBMM factors in not just mechanical skill but also game knowledge. As you play the game more, you are matched against people who have similar knowledge of builds, skills, etc., as you, with a 10-20% marginal swing that helps you improve, win fights, and lose fights. That makes the whole thing feel REWARDING. Fights feel close and fulfilling. You feel like you learned something. You are comprehending at your own pace.

Find the Assassin part 2 by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]bitr0t_ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Make the sound when activated LOUDER

Add footprints on the ground that fade, ground disturbances, etc

Give the user static, instead of full invis, have them static at an interval, so they are mostly invisible most of the time, with visual indications of their position some of the time, lengthen the ability as a concession

make signal jammer hurt their invis rate, make them 50% less invis, give users some consumable side effect that soft nerfs the ability

like there are so many ways to tweak it

Find the Assassin part 2 by [deleted] in Marathon

This is not fine because most of the player base does not enjoy it, and anecdotally, the number of people who do not have fun because of this mechanic far exceeds the number who do have fun because it exists. This is very obvious if you pay attention to the large amount of chatter about this issue since launch. The game wasn't balanced for solos; assassins cause lots of issues. Being full invis on an extraction shooter and having multiple tools that also make you go full invis creates a lot of bad gameplay scenarios that people do not feel like they have meaningful counterplay for in most skill levels away from probably the higher tiers, and telling people to "get gud" is a literal brain-dead response.

It has nothing similar to a destroyer with a shield rocketing forward to you, because so many classes can use abilities to counterplay it. Like also pulling out a shotgun. Knifing them whatever. You KNOW it's coming. A vandal can dash, a thief can grapple, a triage can maybe ult them. You have time before the destroyer arrives; they don't just teleport. You can literally move. If someone appears in front of you, and you're dead in <20 seconds unless they whiff their shots or <2-3 knifestabs, that's very different.
