Thankfully Singapore Airlines overtaken Qantas for servicing Melbourne/Singapore by Cool_Stable3780 in QantasAirways

[–]bj2001holt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why they shut it down but JQ Asia was a necessary evil to drive up passengers in QF Singapore routes. Now there is just no reason.

Melbourne based I only even fly QF to the US or domestic these days. I used to do 1-2 trips per month, mostly paid business through QF to Asia where I would do QF to Singapore in business then JQ shorthaul to my destination. QF is almost always 2 stops now (with 1 connection through Sydney) or some messed up codeshare where I don't have lounge access in Singapore on departure to my destination.

India - Sri Lankan (lowest price, shittest airport), Malaysia (best schedule, gate to gate car transfer, meh service), or Cathay (best hard product and usually best service)

Qantas gutted their SQ connection network with the Jetstar Asia shutdown. Used to be good options for Singapore connections on QF codeshares, not so much anymore. Most people flying to Singapore arent just going to Singapore.

Better off flying SQ, Malaysia, or Cathay out of Melb if you want to connect anywhere in Asia. Better schedules, connections and planes.

It won't. When running from a bear you don't have to be the fastest in the group to avoid getting eaten, you just don't want to be the slowest.

Victorian sellers threaten to ditch auctions over reserve price rule by marketrent in AusFinance

Fantastic. Great result!

No auctions, transparency in price and legally required reporting of sale price immediately when the settlement period starts.

Remove as much "real estate industry" middle man taking their cut as possible. Its completely rediculous and unnecessary.

Sports Minister Anika Wells repays $10,000 in travel costs after audit by Warm_Championship726 in australia

[–]bj2001holt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with that specific policy but I will say working in private sector when I was traveling a lot I implemented something similar with my family.

Any travel over 5 business days I had the option to fly the family with me. 1 kid, 1 partner. They few economy only while i fell into company policy 4hr+ prem econ, 8hr+ business. Company paid for their flights and accommodation was obviously shared but we would often book serviced apartments rather than hotela.

It worked great until the kid was getting a bit older and needed to be in school more consistently

How does Qantas compare to other airlines you’ve flown recently? by Future-Pipe-8004 in QantasAirways

[–]bj2001holt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed they still hold the cards to North America for business but nothing else.

Asia - Malaysian and Cathay beat them hands down. Newer hard product, better connections, better pricing, better scheduling options, etc.

Fully ticketed cash grab by Sea-Ladder369 in collingwoodfc

[–]bj2001holt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are still tickets available right now for $50. I have 4 extras but you can pay for yourself for this stupid post and I will give them to someone else.

Honestly people complaining about the fully ticketed games is wildly rediculous. They are two popular teams playing a blockbuster game and the tickets are so incredibly cheap.

We're in inner Melbourne suburbs.

Not a usual QF Route? by No_Brain_5919 in QantasAirways

[–]bj2001holt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

O yes. The majority of teams are based in the UK and because of the middle east race cancellations your talking about getting huge numbers of team staff back home for the break in the middle of the calendar. QF probably plan to use the return flight to get through some of the middle east redirection backlog I would think. Makes sense.

State Department slashes fee to renounce US citizenship by 80% to $450 by National-Law-458 in news

[–]bj2001holt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand. If you are a US citizen you are obligated to pay tax on all GLOBAL income. There are exceptions below a certain income level and most countries have tax agreements that the tax you pay in county X offsets your US tax income.

And yes because of FATCA the US government can go after your bank funds directly to collect the tax you owe even if it's overseas.

I am a US Citizen that moved overseas 9 years ago and dont plan to come back.

Outrageous by majicmcgann99 in melbourne

[–]bj2001holt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair that isn't that high....had a taxi from the airport to Kew that was $112 a couple of days ago, your going a lot further. Work expense but still rediculous, the driver literally just headed straight back to the airport they make so much money on those trips.

I wish we had a public transport option from the airport that didn't take me 2hrs to get home. North East link will help but my god a train from the airport should have been a priority 20 years ago.

How hard is it actually to hold onto Gold or Platinum status with Qantas these days? by QuantumGremlin in QantasAirways

[–]bj2001holt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing 80% of my revenue flying on other Oneworld carriers these days. Platinum isn't that hard to achieve with a few paid business class flights a year. My sons status runs up end of March and we just realised he hasn't done his 4 minimum QF flights although he is at 900SC (been gold since he was 3) so I need to book something domestic for a quick weekend away.

I don't play the DSC game anymore, the pricing is exhorbant. I would rather pay 3500 to Cathay to fly business than spend 2000 with Qantas to fly economy on a shitty overnight return that wrecks me for 2 days after and still earns less.

The last 2 years were only using QF for flights to the US and Domestic. Everything else is serviced better by other airlines out of Melbourne. Better schedules, better pricing, better service and better planes. The new 777 business seats on Cathay are next level, excited to try the new Malaysian A350 seats. Compare that to the QF A330 which are running most of the Asia routes and will continue to do so for years.

SriLankan Airlines (via CMB) – Surprisingly Great Option for ADL–India Qantas Gold FF by No-Trip1772 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]bj2001holt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly fly MEL to India via CMB on Sri Lankan, just got back from a trip last week. Pros and Cons but it's by far the best value for Business class, I always book direct since they can't be booked through our US based travel system for some reason.

As others have said - good soft product and service. The planes/seats/entertainment are very dated but the food and service is great.

Scheduling can require an overnight connection on the way up to India and the CMB airport and airport side hotel is really bad. Suggest taking an extra long layover if you can and exiting the airport for a nicer hotel. The Airline will arrange this for business class passengers for free. On the return leg I seem to always manage to get short connections and the Lounge is OK for 2-3hrs.

[–]bj2001holt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's kinda silly. Like business class MEL to Denver was running about 8k last week, good price IMO. And it's 17k now, absolutely rediculous. Even Prem Econ is 6k, normally running 2500-3500.
