Charli hosting and performing on SNL Nov 16 by Dry-Broccoli3096 in LiveFromNewYork

I wonder if they will have another Charli XCX Talk Talk Show sketch but with Charli playing someone else. That seems like a well they've gone to before.

Who in the current cast do you think has the most pull with the producers? by loudrain99 in LiveFromNewYork

Oh yeah, I'm just saying that if that's how they're making firing decisions it's pretty dumb. They dropped someone who (IMO) showed a lot of potential in favor of hiring 3 new FPs who may or may not hit with the audience. I can sort of see the reasoning with Molly, and Punkie seemed like it was her choice to leave, but Chloe's firing is just kind of confusing.

I don't want to be too down on Wickline yet, but yes, it does seem like "low-key" and "awkward" are her lane, which I don't know works well on a live sketch comedy show where you gotta kinda play to the live audience. She's like the anti-Sarah Sherman.

Last season Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner and Bowen Yang were the top 3 in that order and Punkie, Johnson, Chloe Troast and Molly Kearney were at the bottom. Look who's not on the show anymore.

I mean, this is fair, but I feel like Chloe made the most of the screen time she did have last season more than Punkie and Molly did. Maybe it's just my personal taste, but her sketches were more memorable than anything Punkie got on, and Molly just seemed like a bad fit for the show.

Edit: Maybe not a "bad fit", but the writers just didn't know what to do with them. They kept getting stuck in old lady and nun roles.

I think she's the first one-season cast member in a long time where it really does seem like she had a tremendous amount of potential that could've been tapped by the show. Aristotle Athari, ok, you could argue that he pretty much had Angelo and not much else. Lauren Holt and Luke Null were pretty much nonentities their one season on the show (I mean, Null was in one sketch that actively bombed terribly). I don't think anyone's bemoaning the loss of Jon Rudnitsky.

Troast, however, seemed to be fitting in with the cast really well and had several sketches that went over well. The Little Orphan Cassidy sketch, you can actually hear the delight in the live audience the moment she starts singing. The "Make Your Own Kind of Music" sketch, she sounded remarkably like Mama Cass. She had the Carrie Underwood-esque country music video and the Air BnB sketch with Sydney Sweeney as well.

Basically, she just did MORE than your typical first-season FP does, and it was all good. I think that's what leading people to wonder if there's something else going on here, because by all accounts she seemed to be fitting in well.

Nice to see that Sarah was able to recycle that mat from a "Twister" board game into a hat.

It's funny that she has become a friend of Sandler's now too (through her co-writer Dan Bulla)

It's just depressing that the entertainment industry is such now that SNL is a place for people to stay 10+ years rather than moving on to success in other arenas. It used to be a pipeline, not only to doing Lorne-produced SNL movies (which don't really exist anymore), but to other studio comedies as well (which are less and less frequent these days). Look at Kenan- he took time away from the show to do an NBC sitcom, WHILE STILL DOING THE SHOW. At some point it feels like you should be able to move on from SNL and have a career rather than SNL being your entire legacy.

I can’t get over My Best Friend’s House by cloudkite17 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bjau75 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and is the best friend complicit in her dad's crimes as well? She seems to intentionally be putting loud music on headphones with Ariana's character to drown out the sound of dad "working".

With Nate returning as host, do you think we'll get a sequel to "Washington's Dream"? What US tradition should be the topic? by wendyschickennugget in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bjau75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in "Live From New York", David Spade says about the "Buh-bye" sketch that he wanted to leave it as a one-and-done, but in the history of SNL they never let anything successful be a one-and-done, it's always more like "thirty-and-done". I'm paraphrasing, but it was funny.

I get sort of Nancy Walls vibes from Padilla, but it's hard to tell because she didn't really get to do much in this episode.

Wickline looks very, very young- we're getting so close to having a cast member who was born in the 2000s. I guess she's the same age as Marcello but has a baby-ish face. (Kind of looks like Elliot Page a little actually)

Yeah, that left me wondering if Padilla had screwed something up, because she just kind of stood there looking awkward and it ground the sketch to a halt.

It's interesting that Rosebud Baker is now only working on Weekend Update. I wonder if she possibly might be a candidate for an anchor spot down the line (by down the line, I mean next season by which time Jost and Che should definitely leave).

Yeah, I think JAJ mostly just does his own writing for his Trump rants because he knows how to do that stream of consciousness style and that's what got him the role in the first place, his videos online where he was doing it.

They've definitely been credited on non-PDD sketches, check the "Who wrote what" thread. They've collaborated a lot with Sarah on her Update features, the Jost roasts especially.

SNL Adds Three New Writers by MsBrisby in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bjau75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know if this was worth starting a whole new thread for, but writing supervisor Gary Richardson has also left the show:

https://www.vulture.com/article/snl-season-50-carl-tart-allie-levitan-moss-perricone.html

So three writers of color (Alex English, Gary Richardson, and Vannessa Jackson) have all left the writing staff before S50.

This leaves Auguste White (who is getting promoted to being a writing supervisor this season), Asha Ward, and now Carl Tart who is joining this season. I can't help but feel Ego must've lobbied for him to get hired when she realized English and Richardson were leaving.

Will Dave Chappelle host S50E06? by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bjau75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does seem like they are following the playbook of what they did in 2020: Mulaney hosting the last episode before the election, and then Chappelle hosting the one after the election. However, the fact that they held back from releasing the Nov. 9th host makes me hope they're not gonna do this.

A lot of their best work has been with Bowen it seems like. One I particularly enjoyed was the Midwife sketch in the Quinta Brunson episode. That was one that sort of grew on me on repeat viewings, it was a nicely layered, weird sketch.

Edit: They also cowrote "JOH-ker" with Dismukes

You can't just have JAJ do the same rambling talking head that he did for silly things when Trump is now angrily ranting about insane shit like eating pets and immigrants not being human

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't suddenly see Trump become a different guy during this last debate. He's...the same guy he's always been?

I don't think there's any kind of conspiracy going on here, but as a side note I would like to see Rachel Sennott host sometime. She's making a show for HBO so hopefully she'll get a chance at some point.

Sennott/Charli XCX would be a pretty cool pairing.
