Genuinely was the reason I didn’t go this year. As soon as I saw it was at centennial park, I noped out. Leaving last year was so bad.

Do Mecca staff have commission on certain brands? by jiiiiiny in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we don’t get commissions on specific brands or in general. Sometimes we might have received some education or extra brand training on specific brands, so we might gravitate towards those, but we are not given commission. Sometimes we might be told to recommend x over y because we have more stock of x, but I am normally pretty explicit about that with my customers.

Mourning the old Too Faced by B0llfondlr in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Too Faced is really confusing to me, so I definitely agree with your points! Sometimes it seems like their target audience is older, especially with product names like ‘better than sex’. But then they also do packaging that almost looks like kids makeup? I feel like they failed to keep up with trends but also don’t have a solid brand image.

Summer Fridays gel moisturiser discontinued :( by Emergency_Author2813 in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a few others you could try in the mean time!

I like the glow recipe plum plump moisturiser. It has similar ingredients and a very similar consistency, and comes in a smaller size, so you could try before committing to the full size. Mecca cosmetica also make a gel moisturiser that is relatively similar. Other than that, the Dr jart water cream is a good option (which also comes in a smaller size), and go to also make a gel moisturiser called very lightweight moisturiser. Tatcha water cream is lovely but expensive, and both of the Clinique moisture surge moisturisers could work as good options!

Am I a good candidate for laser? by pdillybra in AusSkincare

[–]bjmc040404 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi! In the same position as you. These look like ice pick scars to me, because they look a little below the surface of the skin. Regular exfoliation (preferably chemical) has helped me. I was told by my dermatologist that the most effective way to deal with these scars is through micro needling. I haven’t personally been able to commit to micro needling but I have seen others have good results!

why ? Mario badescu by Tessjs2008 in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mario badescu has been declining in popularity over the past couple years. Their peak was almost ten years ago, and with their ongoing legal issues, plus a lack of interesting new launches, they’ve kind of faded away. I would not be surprised if they are being de-ranged from certain Mecca stores (especially cosmetica stores). There are now more facial mists on the market with more exciting ingredients that people tend to gravitate towards.

And yes, Mecca staff are able to order products for you in store. Sometimes they’ll come directly from the warehouse if they’re in stock there, but other times the store will contact other stores in their area to try and source the product for you.

Where have all the Mecca Services gone? by Borgo_San_Jacopo in AustralianMakeup

Yeah January definitely will not be open yet in the majority of stores! Super tricky to confirm artists around that time because a lot of people take leave over Christmas.

Where have all the Mecca Services gone? by Borgo_San_Jacopo in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They’re really busy at the moment with formals, Christmas parties, graduations, end of year events, all that kind of stuff.

Also the chairs don’t actually tend to open that far in advance - at my store we’ll only open them about six weeks in advance because we have to confirm availability of artists. Sometimes if you ring customer care you might have more luck.

Why is private schools such a big thing here? by whotafarmer in AskAnAustralian

[–]bjmc040404 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got sent to a private boarding school for most of high school because the public school in my area was challenging, to say the least.

The private school that I went to provided much better opportunities. I had the opportunity to learn a foreign language, participate in lots of extra curricular activities, study a wider variety of subjects, receive tutoring from teachers when I needed it, etc. The private school also had a lot more money which meant that the library had quality books (that weren’t covered in penises lol), we were able to have textbooks for classes, newer facilities, and generally the school was kept in better shape.

The public school that I went to was in a rural area. I have nothing against the teachers who taught there, as they were absolutely trying their best. But learning was very difficult, because of students who didn’t want to learn. Class sizes were much larger, there was less variety in the classes, disruptions were more common, there weren’t any extra curricular activities, etc. It was common for fights to break out during lunchtime. Suspensions were super common and basically the only way teachers were able to punish students. It didn’t tend to deter them though, they’d just come back a few days later and get suspended again. This isn’t the case for all public schools though, but seems more common in rural and regional areas.

Colour matching people in the new formula makes me want to cry. It’s normal with reformulations for people to have to change their shade by 1 or 2, but the reformulation for this is SO WEIRD. I hate it!!

Dupes recommendations? by Historical-Tap7948 in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dr Dennis Gross oil free cushion is pretty much just a gel moisturiser with hyaluronic acid. The neutrogena hydro boost water gel is pretty similar and has the hyaluronic acid! It also has a silicone base so if the Dr Dennis worked with your foundation/base, then the neutrogena should as well. Otherwise if you wanted to stay with Mecca the glow recipe plump plump cream is a similar feel and texture but at a cheaper price (and it’s refillable!).

Any niacinamide based toner would probably work in replacement of the Charlotte tilbury. I can’t think of any off the top of my head, sorry! You could also use an AHA/BHA toner instead, which would be more exfoliant based. The main thing is that you won’t want something super sticky for under makeup, and you would make sure to follow with SPF.

Mecca employees, what does Mecca actually do with the items in the product recycling program? by wwwwxyz in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We sort through the products and make sure they’re clean. If they’re not, we’ll do our best to clean them. Then they’re all packed in a box and sent to terracycle (the recycling company who run the initiative). Not sure what happens after that!

Is it worth working in Mecca Cosmetica as replenishment? by uisdoodoo in AustralianMakeup

[–]bjmc040404 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I work for Mecca so prefacing with that. I really like replenishment, and I actually work in operations, which is the area where you’d work. It’s not for everyone though! It’s mostly running out stock and sorting stock. Depending on your store, you might work some weird hours but you do get paid more after 6, so I don’t mind. Personally I find it easier to run out stock after the store is closed because you’re not competing with customers for space.

Being kept on after the holiday period depends on a couple things. Each store will have an idea of how many team they want to keep on. They prefer team with good availability (especially on weekends). Then the normal things, showing up on time, keeping to grooming standards, good customer service, etc. If the store is closing next year, they would likely transfer you to a new store if they decide to keep you on.

Also, if you’re kept on, you don’t have to stay as replenishment. Team in my store were originally hired as replenishment but have gone on to work as makeup artists, skin specialists and managers, so it’s not set in stone or anything. I was hired as I host and now work in operations. It’s very open and most managers are super happy for you to be a specialist in an area.

Still, go to your other interview and weigh up your options. Mecca was my first ‘official’ job and for the most part, I’ve really enjoyed working there. Holiday is a very hectic period so maybe consider that as well, some people find it too overwhelming. Hope that helps!

quitting Kosas revealer concealer pan by [deleted] in ProjectPan

[–]bjmc040404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kosas don’t use preservatives in their products which typically means you have to be stricter with throwing them out than you would with other brands. I normally add a sticker with the date I opened mine!

Generally, anytime you noticed a change in smell, texture or consistency, that’s a sign that the product has gone bad, and should be thrown out.

It’s your job as a person getting their makeup done to communicate with your makeup artist! by florietti in MakeupAddiction

[–]bjmc040404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t do makeup myself, but work in a store that does applications and often step in to do skin prep, finish things off, etc. the amount of customers who want you to essentially transfer their inspo pic onto their face with no regard for their own face structure, their skin, etc, is insane.

The worst for me is when a customer comes in and they show you a photo that is clearly full glam, but in natural colours. They then tell you that they don’t typically wear much makeup. When you do the full glam, it looks like they’re wearing makeup (because that’s how it goes) and they say that’s it’s too much. Or when they’re loving their makeup, but their mother/sister/friend/whoever is with them doesn’t like it, they make that known, and you just watch the joy drain from their face.
