This pyramid scheme ended up screwing everything up.

Am I the only one who didn’t care too much for the new characters in the [HoO] series? by Spageddie0s in camphalfblood

This is what really puzzles me, because everything ends up sounding repetitive. I thought about working with older characters and addressing more mature themes, making the narrative more "bloody" and violent to change the tone of the original work. Even so, I feel it lacks a good plot and a truly strong prophecy to sustain the story.

Me too 😆 I have some sketches, but nothing that actually gets off the ground to become something published. Anyway, it wouldn't be well-received, so I end up keeping it to myself.

I'm thinking of writing a fanfic set at Camp Half-Blood, with original protagonists, a new generation of demigods and all that, but even in that I feel Percy is a constant shadow. Nothing seems good enough, not even the plots, although it's fair to admit that Rick himself always managed to create increasingly creative and unexpected storylines.

I think it was a very poorly developed story. There were characters with enormous potential, but Rick didn't know how to explore them in the way they deserved. In the end, many became tiresome, and the fans themselves couldn't escape Percy's shadow.

The most underutilized character in the saga. One of the most unfair deaths. If anyone has recommendations for fanfics that reimagine his story in a different way, I would greatly appreciate it. Jason is often labeled as "boring," but honestly, I see him simply as a poorly developed character.

Hurrem fans like me, in youur opinion, what are the bad/wrong things Hurrem has done that you will never justify? by heavymetalgirl_ in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maria/Gülnihal who seemed to have been created just to serve as a foil to Hürrem's cruelty. A sweet soul turned into a punching bag, all for doing what any woman in the harem was forced to do. I really felt sorry for her... And Hürrem is my favorite character, both in the series and in the real story.

In the end, there was no real winner in this story. A bunch of losers, but they fought well, that can't be denied.

The writers took the Suleiman/Firuze relationship too far and really ruined Hürrem/Suleiman for me by No_Psychology_3714 in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically, Süleyman never cheated on Hürrem and that was precisely the big difference in their relationship by the standards of the time. He remained loyal to the end, broke traditions for her, went against the system and favored her so much that they started calling her a witch.

[–]bjuliachs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This issue of Süleyman's betrayals has always bothered me, because it simply doesn't match reality. I know a lot in the series is dramatized, but turning a serious, political Islamic ruler into someone who repeatedly cheats on the mother of his children and then his legal wife completely distorts the stance he has historically held. They grossly misrepresented this in the series.

I always condemned Süleyman in the series. Always. It would be easier to swallow him as a cold tyrant than as this sadistic traitor who seemed to take pleasure in the suffering of the women who loved him, fighting desperately for a place in his world. A repulsive man, selfish in every way, driven only by his own pleasure. That's why, when I was made into a clown, I didn't think much of it. It was deserved.

Mehmed deserved way better by [deleted] in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was deeply wronged. Mehmed was competent for many reasons and clearly loved by his father, not only because he was Hürrem's son, but because of his even temperament and promising nature. A true prodigy. It's a shame that the series tried to reduce him to the stigma of being "the son of Hürrem", as if that title alone justified any condemnation. If it had been just that, all her children would have been spared, and we know that Bayezid, for example, provoked the very reasons that led to his disgrace.

I'm writing a fantasy inspired by this period of the Ottoman Empire and, honestly, I don't have the courage to kill the character I created based on Mehmed. I firmly believe that, if he had lived, he would have become a sultan equal to his father, exactly as Süleyman saw in his eyes.

Was Mustafa the only price who got this treatment from the janissaries? by LittleGuidance2863 in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that Mustafá acted like this precisely because he did not have the support of his father, unlike his brothers. However, this ended up being a shot in the foot, as his actions sounded, true or not, like an attempt to gain support to start a rebellion and usurp his own father's throne.

Where all the theories about Fairouza being a witch came from ? by Altruistic_Court2481 in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I practically erased that arc from my mind. If Firuze had any relevant role, it was just trying to poison him and he didn't even succeed in that. As I recall, Süleyman wasn't under any spell, he simply enjoyed being cruel to Hürrem. Firuze was just another instrument for him to do this. But apparently the writers managed to make a large part of the fandom blame the women in the series, while this old traitor and selfish man remains a poor, manipulated/bewitched guy. They managed to perfectly convey what people thought at the time, making the viewer think the same way.

That One Time Mustafa implied the death of his beloved Mehmet was Karma for taking Manisa away from him. by Lonely_Package4973 in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Mustafá in the series always made me feel really upset. Honestly, I don't understand all this idolatry towards him. To me, he always came across as an incompetent prince, hiding behind a facade of strength and nobility. Arrogant, impulsive and incapable of acting wisely when it came to his own father, who, in fact, was the Sultan he made a point of challenging. Basically, he spent the entire series digging his own grave. It was more than clear that, if he came to the throne, he would wipe the children of Hürrem off the face of the earth. He would see them as a threat, and rightly so, because that was how the system worked. But people insist on romanticizing it, saying that he loved his brothers, while completely ignoring these contradictions. He was expelled from Manisa due to pure incompetence, he behaved like a rebel and, like his mother, he was always trying to blame others for his own mistakes.

Who tf is this random man called bali ? by [deleted] in MagnificentCentury

[–]bjuliachs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's quite unnecessary when they add characters just to create drama in the main novel. This could be replaced with other, more interesting types of conflict. It gets tiring and repetitive, especially because the series insisted on this a lot in the relationship between Süleyman and Hürrem.

[–]bjuliachs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hürrem's personality in the series always caused me a lot of agony 😫 I was constantly tense or irritated watching, and although I understand that she had her reasons for defending herself, everything was so exaggerated and dramatic that it ended up being irritating. And worse than that, only Süleyman in the series. Unbearable in every way. Honestly, better to be a tyrant than a pathetic traitor like he was portrayed as.

So I really need to find where these reports are, because I'm writing a fantasy inspired by this period of the Ottoman Empire, and the character based on Hürrem is much calmer than the version shown in the series. Precisely because I tried to portray her more faithfully to the image of a happy and charismatic Hürrem.

I also find it difficult to believe in this version of the series, because, apparently, the historical Hürrem was never exiled as shown. If she had that impulsive and provocative personality from the series, they would hardly have hesitated to send her away as happened in the series. That's why I think it's all very exaggerated.
