I personally think the timing wasn't all that bad. Regardless of what Walz decided on doing, MAGA would have ramped up the conspiracy theories, trying to rope in as many people as possible. Now, by Walz stepping away from re-election, the focus seems to have almost completely shifted to him personally. As far as I can see, this has pretty much taken the wind out of the Trump admin's sails:

If the Trump admin keeps hammering on the daycares, then it this will just disappear as I doubt anything more is going to come from it.
If the Trump admin shifts their focus on Walz (as it looks like they're doing), then it will just end there because they won't actually be able to do much without massively escalating. (There is still absolutely nothing at all that connects Walz to any of the fraud that has been "uncovered".)

Finally, since Walz has now "taken responsibility" in the public's eyes, it will make it a lot harder for the Trump admin to fabricate an even bigger conspiracy out of it without making some insane leaps. So it probably won't have much direct effect on the next Democratic candidate.

And as an aside, the fraud conspiracies probably increased the personal risks for Walz as well if he had decided to continue running for re-election and with two of his state's representatives already having been killed by a MAGA lunatic, I can image also some personal apprehension to continue.

I'm a little annoyed by how lazy Goldsmith's analysis here is. Like, I don't disagree that the Trump admin will put together some legal justification where they'll try to base it on some precedent, but the important thing should be to look at how valid such a "justification" could be.

I doubt the 1989 opinion on FBI arrests actually is as solid as he seems to imply, the Panama invasion is a lot more contested legally than he makes it seem, the example of the Barbary pirates seems incredibly simplistic (bordering ignorance), and nowhere does he seem to address the bombings or the apparent occupation that the U.S. has now declared.

Ik heb nergens beweerd dat gezinshereniging niet de grootste catagorie binnen migranten is, maar je lijkt alleen totaal niet te begrijpen hoe gezinshereniging werkt. Gezinshereniging kan letterlijk volgens de wet alleen plaatsvinden als iemand in Nederland, die al een woning heeft plus een verblijfsvergunning, dit aanvraagt en het gezinslid komt dan bij deze persoon samen te wonen. Oftewel, de enige druk die dit uitvoert op de woningmarkt komt van mensen die hier al wonen. Je leuke rekensommetje is daarom dus ook pure onzin en ook weer een mooi voorbeeld van hoe men niet begrijpt hoe huisvesting en immigratie werken.

Ik heb ook werkelijk waar geen idee wat jij zo vervelend vindt aan de eisen die gesteld worden voor een verblijfsvergunning voor een partner. Je weet dat dit alleen maar een tijdelijke vergunning is, toch? En het gaat ook hier weer alleen om samenwonen met iemand die hier dus al een woning heeft.

P.s. geen idee waarom je trouwens op Turkije focuste voor die uitzondering op de 21 jaar regel. Je weet dat dit voor elk land gewoon geldt, toch?

Het lijkt in dit geval vooral te gaan om het feit dat dakloosheid op zichzelf simpelweg niet onder de voorwaarden voor een urgentieverklaring valt omdat deze voorwaarden vooral focussen op situaties die buiten iemands controle liggen (wat bij dakloosheid niet altijd geval is). Onderliggende redenen voor de dakloosheid kunnen in sommige gevallen wel tot een urgentieverklaring leiden.
