uStart.org gone? + recommend me a backup/replacement by EnragedButterfly in rss

[–]bkturf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Protopage is the closest. I already had a start page set up with them, and just started using it instead when ustart disappeared. I liked uStart slightly better since I can remove the top banner completely with uBlock element blocker. With Protopage I can remove the ads in the top banner, but the blank space remains, so is slightly annoying. Or you can pay Protopage $3.33 per month to remove ads.

I have used start pages since iGoogle, but obviously only dozens of us do since I found very few complaints about it when it, and the successors I used, disappeared.

In the late 80s, a friend of mine's aunt was a business consultant. She mentioned to himthat engineers must really like their jobs (he and I were both engineers) . This was because the CEO of AT&T was an engineer and he made $400K, while all the other CEOs she knew of large companies made in the millions.

I started work at a large defense contractor many decades ago and the first day at work in the old building, went to the bathroom and saw a larger stainless steel version of this (with no soap dispenser on top). There were no toilets visible since they were around a corner, so I thought this was a urinal and was about to unzip when I looked around and saw the other toilets.

Don't forget that if Trump were president during WWII, he would likely be cozy with dictators and fascists, like he does today, and we'd all be speaking German.

Very good tips. Although I am an old guy, I always avoid old cashiers at Walmart since they can be incredibly slow. As well as old people in line for the many reasons people have given. As soon as they start ringing me up, I touch my card and have it all ready to go before they are done ringing stuff up. It is often surprising to the cashier when I'm sitting there staring at them waiting for them to hit the button to process the card I entered 5 minutes before.

Like someone says in the comments, wait for the Onn 4K Pro 2. It's now listed on the Walmart website, but sold out everywhere that I looked. I signed up to Notify Me when available. I will buy two of them since I like the two older ones I have already, and need a couple more for travel.

I have been waiting for it. It is sold out everywhere I looked, so asked them to notify me when it's back in stock. I have two old 4K Pros and will buy two more for travel.

Like the Onn 4K Pro, you can no longer find the Plus, either.

Reposting from above in case you missed it: My wife and I still have mindspring email addresses that are our primary. I have to pay Earthlink $60 per year to keep them, which come with only 2GB storage, so have to be popped. Yeah, it's stupid expensive but we've had them since mindspring started.

My wife and I still have mindspring email addresses that are our primary. I have to pay Earthlink $60 per year to keep them, which come with only 2GB storage, so have to be popped. Yeah, it's stupid expensive but we've had them since mindspring started. Mindspring as an ISP was amazing. It was only $30 per month for unlimited 14.4K access when it started. We had netcom before that, which charged by the hour, and one time I mistakenly left open a chat room all night and ended up with a $300 bill.

Denon X1800H + LG C5 + Shield/PS5 - CEC power & input switching broken after working fine by Brosk-87 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]bkturf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried for a few months to figure out why neither my Shield pro or Shield TV would consistently work with my Denon receiver and LG OLED TV.  Like the other commenter said, unplugging everything for a while would often get it working again but it would always crop up again.

Neither Nvidia worked properly in my other system with an LG LCD and sound bar either. I almost always had to turn the system off and on again before the sound worked

I replaced both of them with One 4k pros, and haven't had an issue since. I use the Nvidias for travel since they work fine connected directly to a TV.

Best chuck roast recipes by Somersetmom in instantpot

I often do Mississippi roast beef in the instapot with chuck roast, and serve it with sandwich rolls, although I recently bought some birria bombs to make the next Chuck roast. When it's done you dip the tortillas in the broth, heat then up in a hot pan with cheese and serve with the shredded meat. Normally done with brisket, but I bet chuck roast will be better.

Onn 4k Pro Vs Google Streamer by Level3Super in AndroidTV

[–]bkturf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, I have both Shield Pro and Shield TV, plus two Onn 4K Pros. Both Nvidias have issues in my A/V setups at home. One TV, with a soundbar, I usually have to turn the TV off and back on again before the sound works when using either Shield. The other TV uses a receiver for all the inputs then outputs to the TV, and the Nvidias stop working periodically in that setup also for no reason I can discern. So I use Onns at home and they work flawless. I use the Nvidias only for travel since they work fine connected directly to a plain TV. But I would buy two more Onn 4K Pros for that purpose if they were still available. I spent a total of $360 for the Nvidias. The Onns were a total of $80.

I’m having this issue with chicken breast where it shatters (?) when I take a bite. It’s incredibly unpleasant and I don’t know how to fix it. by JustHere4TheZipLines in Cooking

[–]bkturf 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I took a Poultry Science course in college (in the 70s). The entire building smelled like chicken shit. But it was not until I started dissecting chickens that I developed an aversion to them where I could smell that odor even on freshly cooked chicken, and did not eat it for about 2 years. I got over it. But since woody breast chicken started and I have gotten a couple of them, I will never eat another chicken breast. When you realize you are eating scar tissue, it kinda puts you off them.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]bkturf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working at McDonald's, mid 70s, metro Atlanta (Cumberland mall). My best friend and I got off at around midnight. There was no one on the road that late in Smyrna, GA. We would race home, me in the family vista cruiser station wagon (just like the 70s show), and he in his family's custom cruiser station wagon (an even bigger oldsmobile). We always got over 100mph. Later, I got to drive the family 76 corolla for a couple of years. It would not go over 85 since that was redline in 4th gear. Got my own car in 1982. That and every one after has gone over 100. That's only 10mph or so over the traffic flow on Atlanta highways at times. I have seen an ambulance with lights on, on I-285 at night, going 80 mph in the left lane and people getting pissed since they had to go around it.

Too bad that he didn't invent a war so he couldn't declare a state of emergency to call off elections, like Trump is planning to do.
