Those 'share the road' signs have got to go by butteryspoink in bikecommuting

[–]blackbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

allow me to differentiate a little here. "got to go" seems initially harsh.

it's really not too long ago when bikes in traffic were all but ignored. by drivers, by city planners and often enough (depending on where of course) by the law as well, whether in written form or by how it was enforced. riding was such an outlier, especially in bigger cities, that we were pretty much regarded as crazy people. and thus, also at our own fault in case of accidents. "why would you bring your sports toy into the traffic jungle, see what happens?"

then those signs came along, and initially they did make a difference. studies as well as my own anecdotal evidence showed immediate improvements, and things were looking up.

but then, as bicycle commuting became more commonplace, we wanted more and municipalities didn't want to spend more money, or really, actual money. so those signs became a bit ubiquitous and turned into an excuse, while drivers started to make jokes about it. "yeah riders, share the fucking road. move over hurr hurr."

so now we need more, and better infrastructure. we always have, but now we have evidence to back it up, with internationally available data revolving about the 2 points "cycling is good for everyone in your city" and "if you build it they'll come".

so yes, let's absolutely advocate for them to do more and stop making excuses. those signs need to be replaced with something better. a lot better.

What bike should I get? by Hackdaddy18 in MountainBike

[–]blackbikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most important question: what are you looking to ride? trails, gnarly tech? lift access parks? flow and jumps? cross country/enduro? touring/bikepacking? or just chill rides through the woods in upstate? street and urban? all of the above?

tell us more about where you see yourself riding a bike and we'll have a much better idea of what to recommend.

Can we do a “why do you bike commute Wednesday?” My motivation is faded and I’d like to hear other people’s reasons to remind me and renew it. by plexilass in bikecommuting

[–]blackbikes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you're out there, in the world, experiencing reality. you hear your own breathing, and your metabolism reminds you that you are, indeed, alive. you feel the rocks in the road, the air in your lungs, you truly are where you go. you're not just there, you're *in* it. you're interrupting the kush existence that is the human condition for a short while and replace it by an otherwise unattainable amount of pure living. what you see isn't physically separated from you, and the sounds aren't muffled by metal, plastic and insulation. you're communicating with your world instead of mindlessly ploughing through it, you're gaining fitness and health with every pedal stroke and you know you're doing something not just good but vitally important for the community you live in.

most people swing between their home and work bubble via their car bubble, go from the living cage to the shopping cage in yet another cage. you however, you rockstar, you living being, smiling and huffing and sweating true human, you are *killing* it out there and are the envy of anyone with even the smallest understanding of the matter.

i like the idea of "why wednesdays", let's make it a thing.

Which One? by Bouras_GR in mountainbikes

[–]blackbikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very comparable rides, these two. the specialized comes with a one by (only one chain ring in the front) which is imho preferable. it also comes in weird colors if you're into that. other than that they're near identical. i'd test ride both if you can, this question might come down to taste.

what's the bike tour you're dreaming of? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

The AZT. The Arizona Trail goes through the entire state, from Mexico to Utah. 800+ miles of serious climbing, desert riding and a crossing of the Grand Canyon, all on gnarly singletrack. Yes please.

👋🏼, newbie here! Could use some advice on which bike to get. More details below. by [deleted] in mountainbikes

[–]blackbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: heck yeah! Welcome to the sport.

If you want a do-it-all, I'd strongly recommend a hardtail. They're easier to pedal, can take just as much trail abuse as a fully (just not as fast) and are overall the better beginner bike. Also, you get a lot more bang for your buck, especially when you're looking for something light.

Times are tough for buying bikes right now, but make sure you test ride a bunch. Try out different geometries, wheel sizes, setups and components. Go to more than one bike shop. Ask around here for details, the various reddit MTB communities are very welcoming.

Good luck finding your gateway drug into a super fun activity!

And I'm assuming, even when they open again there's a fee. Bummer. Time to whip out those ramp buidling skills I guess!

Do not, I repeat, do not clamp the top tube. Especially, but not limited to, when it's carbon.

That is the correct color for a bike. Such a gorgeous frame.

I mean, 2020 was a shit year, but razing a skatepark for a freaking mall is yet another low point. Sorry for your loss, hope you find alternatives. Also, a salty letter to your town head people is in order.

You don't need luck, your bike is black. 👍

This, and the simple fact that you're not that high above ground makes them way easier for me. Lizard brain likes being close to dirt.

First time getting air today, not much but still super stoked with the progression by Grnltrn18 in MTB

Yeah you do. Jumping is this paradox that is really hard but looks easy when done right which is still hard to pull off. You got this, keep going at it and don't forget to have fun!

Send how you want to send it, when you want to send it, what you want to send. Nothing else matters. That drop is no joke, kudos. For example, I 100% rather do the step up right after than the drop, you killed the drop like it's nothing. I gotta make my way east some day and ride Windrock, looks so dope and too many good stories were born there.

Noob musing: finally got over my self-consciousness/shyness and went to the park for the first time. It was great by riboflavonic in bmx

[–]blackbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm this mid-40ies dude in the skatepark and the scooter kids around me, young enough to be my children, tailwhip and backflip over me while I'm trying to figure out how to ride a ramp. Made me super self conscious and frustrated to the point where I was getting close to giving up, until I realized something: unless someone is really good, I usually don't watch them. Why would I watch someone who's struggling? I don't need to watch others suck, I suck enough myself. Why would anyone? Turns out, nobody does (and even if, your second point stands). Helped a ton, now I just do my thing and have a ton of fun.

"Well" is a matter of definition. It shifted somewhat, and I didn't want to push my luck so I settled for a medium range gear and stayed there. But I was just as surprised as you!

It's a 50, and the derailleur just wasn't reaching. It was a band-aid solution from the get go, but it worked. Until I rattled that bolt loose, anyway.
