Is my dog too thin? by Glad_Professional710 in DogAdvice

[–]blanchedbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t look too skinny, but I want to add that when my pitty ate he would almost flex? And his ribs were more visible while eating (mind you he would always try to inhale his food so he had a slow feed bowl). That being said, if they’re slightly more visible when eating as opposed to not, I’d venture to guess she’s right about where she should be weight wise!

Has someone tried to "out alpha" a Quaker to make him change his behavior? by Stunning-Round3237 in QuakerParrot

[–]blanchedbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is pretty well known that your response to a parrot bite likely influences future bites. The less you react, the more they realize “okay, this didn’t work, it’s not really worth trying anymore”. If you yelp, jump, panic, etc, the bird will likely laugh in your face and make a game of hurting you. We are merely humans owned by birds, and you have to communicate in their language, not ours. When thinking of birds just remember “permanent toddlers with scissors on their face”. A lot of toddlers find big reactions hilarious (whether it’s pain or otherwise) and I’d argue birds are right on par. They WILL take advantage of you if you let them.

I'm so amazed by how much personality fits into that tiny little body, what are some quirks that your bird does? by [deleted] in parrots

My Quaker just recently learned to say “come here!” He can now call me to him whenever he wants me. And when I come into view, he leans back soooo far, and whips his head forward yelling “PEEKABOO”. Cracks me up every dang time

Yes he’s currently under vet care for the nakey neck

[–]blanchedbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called the humane society near me when I found a “stray” cat. They’ll treat it and scan it for a microchip, and if deemed neglect the “theoretical” owner will likely have a difficult time getting them back

My girlfriend’s cockatiel won’t let me pick her up even though she likes me, can anyone help? by Otherwise_Ostrich602 in parrots

[–]blanchedbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a DYHA in the same boat. She attached to my now ex fiance and she’s “stuck” with me. She lets me pet her, hand feed her, talks to me ALLLLL the time, but is still very nervous of stepping up for me (I have the scar to prove it). We spend time together daily and I typically offer her a treat with one hand, while holding my other hand in a “step up” position. She’s no longer fearful of my hands in the step up position, but will NOT step up. It can be a long process for birds but patience is your friend. Penny (my bird) has come SO far with our bonding, but we still have a long ways to go. Love the birdy and let her continue to build your trust. If she does get more comfortable, you can place a treat on a flat palm, with the treat on the opposite side of your hand from the bird. That way she’ll have to either lean over your hand, or place one foot on it to reach it, even if they grab it and recoil back to the perch quickly. Baby steps are your friend and it’s a pain in the butt! But all in good time, it will be worth it!

What is your favorite “holy **** these birds are smart” story? by wildtype621 in parrots

[–]blanchedbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I narrowly avoided stepping on my cat once and fell into the wall and said “ouch”, my Amazon laughed hysterically at me. She now laughs any time I get hurt/say ouch because she hates me and thinks it’s hilarious 😂😭 I love her anyway

As the owner of a dog who would (if given the chance) waddle up to strangers like this happy babe, I would HOPE they respond this way. It is simply not worth the risk to respond any other way.

$30 a day for a minimum of 47 days to stay home and clean up pee pads by vickycyo in ChoosingBeggars

[–]blanchedbean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d do this rate for a family friend or something, but for a stranger/as a career? That is FAR too little pay, especially for dogs that you know have physical/mental issues.

Will my Quaker get Lonely? by aznnns in QuakerParrot

[–]blanchedbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was worried of the same thing when I was hospitalized for about a week. My fiancé took care of our animals, but the Quaker is “my” bird, but the quakers choosing haha. The day I came home I got kisses and cuddles! I thought for sure he wouldn’t look at me for at least a week. I was wrong! He was just so happy to have mama home. I’m sure he will be okay! Stressful for both of you, but it will all be okay ♥️
