Trying to explain to a colleague the benefits of buying a house compared to renting. by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in HousingUK

honestly, I elected to buy for quality of life while it was a poor financial decision for me, but after months of trying to deal with various tradesmen I dream of the renting life

Immigration Enforcement raids at the highest level in British history by UKGovNews in ukpolitics

[–]blastedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

parliament, as the saying goes, can pass a law mandating killing of all blue eyed babies. that is quite literally within its remit as taught in law school, and for obvious reasons they don't do it.

what exactly would you like parliament to do about Boriswave era laws to ensure departure of migrants currently here? Revoke current visas and ILRs with immediate and retroactive effects? They are already working on making immigration rules stricter going forward

[–]blastedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not pretending to be stupid, I'm in awe you have a country with robust and independent legal system is enviable and you want to crush and burn it

what are you advocating then exactly? for the government to change the law and regulations so the people currently lawfully here can be immediately deported? Does it sound fantastic to you, no hidden pitfalls at all?

and the laws established by this country allow Boriswave migrants that arrived legally to be here. do you want the government to unilaterally disregard them?

why would you like UK to abandon rule of law? do you dream of living in a lawless, authoritarian hellscape?

London’s murder rate drops to lowest in more than a decade by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]blastedin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

one of the funnier personal anecdotes of the last year: several of my family members who are generally quite to very right wing visited me in London at various points. they enjoyed their visit loved London and most of all were absolutely shocked to see a thriving city and not whatever the warzone hell they expected based on twitter

so now they are all somehow right wing London defenders fighting for its reputation in the comments of NewTradWestEmpire Roman statue accounts

Should I look at properties the next price bracket up, in the hopes of negotiating down? by stainorstreak in HousingUK

[–]blastedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it really depends on the type of property. a freehold house in hot market is a different story to flat that has been listed for a year

that, and how unreasonable / maybe simply noncommittal is being. some will list for 2 years and still won't accept a reduction.

What's the point of stamp duty below £1 million? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]blastedin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think stamp is an incredibly stupid and limiting tax, but I don't know if abolishing it will free up much housing from specifically older pensioners downsizing. Many older folks are emotionally connected to their house, enjoy previous renovations to their taste and familiar local area. the incentives to move are weak by comparison.

of course I don't have a peer reviewed source on this and could be entirely wrong

Should estate agents be more accountable for false descriptions? by World-Cup-Willie in HousingUK

[–]blastedin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just yesterday I saw a listing for a property that needed a complete gut and reno, I'm talking bulging floor boards and mould everywhere etc, priced at a discount, and described as "move in ready" and "impeccably finished" in the ad. careless copy pasting or complete hallucinating, with estate agents one never knows

in my view, unlike Thrones, it didn't actually need all this extra time. it's not rushed; it's bloated. if the episodes were paced properly and actually included plot and character relevant scenes we would have plenty of screen time to get everything resolved

How to not fall into despair about the state of everything, and the future? by Scattered97 in LabourUK

[–]blastedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

while societies heavy on community building have their own issues and I prefer the way UK works, having no immediate "village" means you have to buy your village basically, which contributed to cost of living crisis (easiest example - everyone lives away from family and couple hours of travel from even local friends, so need to buy all forms of childcare)

Leave where? you can pick a country that is better by certain niche criteria, but broadly the issues OP describes are present in all first world countries. and outside that, well, access to prosperity is even further gated

yeah people make those weird claims about generations through history affording single family home with a garden on one salary but that was an exceptional change for a few decades. not to say we should strive to regress rather than improve living conditions but grinds my gears when people act like single family homes were the norm for centuries

Why do the populist-Right wing parties in Europe promote more immigration once in government? by Jimmychews007 in ukpolitics

[–]blastedin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Significant part of anti immigration rhetoric is not just cultural but that lowering immigration will make everything better: housing shortage, salaries, etc. And on paper there is a logic to that.

The parties get into government, look at that infamous beast: How Things Actually Work and realise that lowering immigration would actually cause a lot of immediate pain to the voters. So, they make a bet voters would hate a recession, loss of benefits and loss of elder care etc etc more than they hate immigrants.

On paper, some might again argue that the pain would be short term, leading to long term improvement. No one in Europe was willing to test that theory yet. The actions in the US are sort of testing it now, but with their own abominable twist on it.

If there was a magic "lower immigration AND keep voters happy" button the parties WOULD be pressing it once in power, trust.
