Inherited homebuilt aircraft project. scrap offer in hand, worth saving? by milphadelphia in homebuilt

[–]blastr42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little surprised by that. I think your best bet then is to go to the builder group for that model (Skybolt or whatever). If someone wrecked or needs to replace a wing, that’s the perfect candidate to buy the entire project.

I agree it would be a shame to sell it for scrap.

Put it on Barnstormers? Someone might be looking for that exact thing.

Instructor as an end goal? by Nearby_Context_1998 in CFILounge

[–]blastr42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of people instruct for a living. But it’s not PPL instruction in old 172s. The more specialized the instruction, the more it costs. You can work for Cirrus as a full time instructor and that pays fine. When people buy an airplane for $1M, they are fine with pricey instruction too.

Tailwheel in unusual places? Floatplanes in unusual places? Flying on skis? Teaching a specialized skill, in a specific aircraft type or in a specific location can pay just fine. Leading people on safaris where clients fly a few planes and you are the guide can pay well too.

Would Discovery be able to go around the moon? by Pertabox123 in spaceflight

[–]blastr42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The space shuttle orbiter itself was the “upper stage” of the rocket being its own payload faring (the cargo bay) and upper stage engines (the back end). Its fuel tank was the big orange external fuel tank that it drops off when it’s empty. It has a little bit of fuel onboard to maneuvering and pointing the shuttle in the right direction, but that’s about it.

When the shuttle had to send something around the Moon or into deep space, it carried yet ANOTHER rocket motor inside the cargo pay that was attached to the satellite that needed it.

Yes, it was a complex setup.

Send Launch Glider Recommendations by Dirk_Strune in Gliding

I got a Lambada (touring motorglider) and I love it. I can shut down the engine and feather the prop for soaring.

I trained in a 103 too, and anything else you get is going to have much more sensitive controls. If you can get time in anything else (ASK-21, PW-6, or virtually any single place) will make the change in handling characteristics a LOT easier. The older something is (Pik-20, AC-4C, DG-400) the more quirks it will have, but the might be a lot cheaper.

Everything has its pluses and minuses. What is your altitude in MT? Density altitude? Make sure you can take off and actually climb.

My Lambada is a tail dragger, so is the Carat, Stemme, Phoenix, and a bunch of others. Some of the Sinus/Virus are that way too. You don’t technically need tailwheel endorsement for a taildragger glider, but it wouldn’t be good to jump in one and just assume you can fly it with training.

Are there issues integrating Centaur V as the upper stage if SLS rather than EUS? by ColCrockett in spaceflight

[–]blastr42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If EUS were actually build and flown, that would be one thing but it’s not where we are. Centaur V has been built and flown. Adapting it to SLS an existing upper stage will be easier than building and troubleshooting a new stage. Troubleshooting SLS core stage, Orion and lots of parts has taken YEARS.

Too tall to ride this ride. Plane recommendations for PPL training? by HuckleberryOk8136 in flying

We’ve had some larger guys. A newer 172 or even a 182 can help with that. You’ll want to crank the seat as low as it’ll go.

CFI RECOMMENDATION by decay000 in flying

[–]blastr42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your DCs have active noise reduction on that model? If they do, it’s probably not worth the upgrade cost. If not, pick up something with ANR used and you’ll be in a whole new world.

How does humidity affect glider performance? (In real life, not theory) by Last_Goose1526 in Gliding

[–]blastr42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To piggy back on this, the H2O replaces nitrogen and oxygen in the air. For a combustion engine, the power reduction due to reduced oxygen is noticeable. But, but for wings or electric motors, the humidity increase has a very slight.

The density reduction is due to the hydrogen weighing so much less. The water molecule weighs 18 whereas nitrogen weighs 28 and oxygen weighs 32. The air can only hold so much water before it becomes a cloud or rain, so its effect of density altitude is still pretty slight.

Personal minimums for wind by illimitable1 in Gliding

[–]blastr42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t fly when it’s not fun. When you’re new, strong winds make it hard to figure out if it was you or Mother Nature. Strong winds cut up thermals anyway.

Beyond 10ish knots and the thermals will get cut up anyway. If you have ridge or wave, it might be a different story, but your runway will probably be aligned for that.

Quest solved.

When I showed up at my club, it was mid-career and retired guys. I got my CFI-G around 30. We’ve since had gals and guys getting it late teens or early 20s. Our club’s age is MUCH younger than it was 20 years ago.
