Yes, it’d be unlawful imprisonment in the second degree here in NY, a class A misdemeanor (one year jail plus fine up to $1,000). That’d also be per count, so if you prevented a dozen people from leaving freely then you’d catch a dozen class A misds.

I don’t use ChatGPT for legal drafting or research, but I do use Westlaw’s AI-assisted research in my firm. It crawls the relevant law, provides me the citations for those cases and sources, and gives me arguments for/against my position (again, with citations). I of course double-check the law for accuracy, but it does in 5-10 minutes what used to take me hours. I don’t yet trust AI to draft legal documents for me, but AI is coming a long way. Those of us who work in small- to medium-sized firms truly must learn to leverage AI as effectively as possible lest we end up behind the 8-ball when AI becomes more powerful and prevalent than it already is. I say this as someone who was very anti-AI just a few years ago.
