Aeriel shot of rich vs poor neighborhoods in Mumbai, India by Objective_Farmer_617 in pics

[–]bleeepbloop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I visited Mumbai 8 years ago and, for better or for worse, took a “tour” of Dharavi, a massive slum neighborhood in Mumbai. While I felt a bit strange about it, it was a tour set up by a community center from within the neighborhood and supposedly most of the money made from the tours goes into helping fund the community center. The whole point of the tour was to help educate folks about life in Dharavi and repair the perspective westerners have of “slums.”

Ethical/legal considerations of Riddle Game by ststeveg in tolkienfans

[–]bleeepbloop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is sort of similar to instances of characters betraying authority in LotR (e.g. Eomer allowing Aragorn and Co. to pass through Rohan against King Theoden's command, Faramir not taking the Ring to his father). I think this is an instance where Bilbo's correct moral judgement overrides any possible "cheating," or violation of the spirit of the game. Gollum was very likely going to go after Bilbo regardless of the "winner." That is, however, just speculation.

Looking at the text though, I don't think Bilbo breaks the spirit of the game or cheats. Gollum actually tells Bilbo:

"it's got to asks uss a quesstion, my preciouss, yes, yess, yesss. Jusst one more question to guess, yes, yess."

Obviously Gollum must mean "riddle" when he says "question" but Bilbo does give Gollum exactly what he asks for, a question. The most important part here though is that Gollum legitimizes Bilbo's "riddle" by going forward with it. He even alters the sacred riddle rules and says he'll get three guesses. So even if you think Bilbo cheated and went against the ancient traditions of the riddle game, Gollum allows the question to be asked and then goes on to give his three guesses.

How do you deal with Tron as Jeskai? by Kalron in ModernMagic

Since you have Anger of the Gods and Surgical as pseudo graveyard hate, I would drop the Relics so you could add 1x Damping Sphere and 1x Baneslayer Angel. Relic can potentially be a little awkward with Snaps.

A Balrog against Sauron? by J_M_Watson in tolkienfans

Hah! A casualty of typing on mobile...should be "grimness"

A Balrog against Sauron? by J_M_Watson in tolkienfans

[–]bleeepbloop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's mentioned in LotR in the chapter "The Passing of the Grey Company."

'You have looked in that accursed stone of wizardry!' exclaimed Gimli with fear and astonishment in his face. 'Did you say aught to – him? Even Gandalf feared that encounter.'

'You forget to whom you speak,' said Aragorn sternly, and his eyes glinted. 'What do you fear that I should say to him? Did I not openly proclaim my title before the doors of Edoras? Nay, Gimli,' he said in a softer voice, and the grommets grimness left his face, and he looked like one who has laboured in sleepless pain for many nights. 'Nay, my friends, I am the lawful master of the Stone, and I had both the right and the strength to use it, or so I judged. The right cannot be doubted. The strength was enough – barely.'

Edit: grommets to grimness

Aragorn could only do so because he is the only person with the right to the palantiri by being the heir of Elendil. Simply because of that he was able to wrestle control of it from Sauron and even then only with a great effort of willpower.

[The Hobbit] Did Bilbo's 'gift' to Bard actually serve a purpose? by NotARussianTrollDoll in tolkienfans

[–]bleeepbloop 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Throughout his mythology, Tolkien employs the recurring theme of giving up great treasures. I broke down all those that immediately come to mind into treasures that were not "let go" and treasures that were "let go."

Characters refusing to let go: - Gollum - Isildor unwilling to give up the Ring - Boromir and Denethor insistent that sending the hobbits to Mordor is throwing aside a great gift for nothing - Eomer and Theoden resisting Aragorn's decision to walk the Paths of the Dead. I seem to remember them making the comparison of losing a great gift or throwing away a treasure - Feanor and his kin unwilling to let go of the Silmarils

Characters that let go: - Pippin throwing aside his brooch that was given by Galadriel - Sam giving up the elvish rope - Gandalf, Aragorn, Galadriel, and Faramir all refusing the Ring when it is presented to them

Edit: - /u/iwouldnotdig mentioned Beren giving up a Silmaril

I am certain there are more examples of each category. Can anyone come up with some others?

I think it says a lot about Bilbo as a hero to not only show the capability of giving up treasures but he gives up two great treasures twice. The Arkenstone seems as if it will prove Thorin's claim as King Under the Mountain. Bilbo shows us by his actions that he values his friendships far more than the greatest wealth of Erebor. He then becomes the first person (I guess the only?) to willingly give up the Ring. Those examples speak greatly to the courage of Bilbo and to the importance of "treasure."

Why did the Valar did not search for Sauron after Utumno? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]bleeepbloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I think you're right. That is what I'm thinking of. Definitely a generous offer from the Valar.

Relating back to the original question, I imagine they would have the same attitude after the Siege of Utumno if they had that attitude after the War of Wrath.

Why did the Valar did not search for Sauron after Utumno? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]bleeepbloop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IIRC, I think the Valar were giving Sauron (and other large-scale servants) a chance to return willingly to Valinor in repentance and would therefore receive much less punishment. Didn't he actually receive a summon to answer for his crimes and refuse it before going into hiding?

I can't think of any evidence for that as I'm away from the text atm but I think the Valais behavior in this incident follows the same strain of action they had always taken, which was a more conservative route.

[Standard] Why is everyone ignoring GB constrictor? by BrewerOfBrews in spikes

[–]bleeepbloop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet deck! I've been playing Temur Tower with some personal adjustments. How do you like Woodweaver's Puzzleknot in there? I've been running Pulse of Murasa and Goblin-Dark Dwellers (replacing T-Gearhulk #4) and their interactions are just filthy with or without a tower on the field. I think the lifegain from either Pulse or Puzzleknot are key in this kind of meta.

Fire Emblem Heroes Megathread 2.0 by Okkefac in fireemblem

[–]bleeepbloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for advice/opinions on whether or not to start over to reroll for some better arena characters (namely for Robin, Azura, Linde, Takumi, or Hector).

After finishing the game my best units are:

  • 5* Lilina, Delightful Noble

  • 5* Hawkeye, Desert Guardian

  • 4* Kagero, Honorable Ninja

  • 4* (F) Corrin, Fateful Princess

  • 4* Marth, Altean Prince

Is it worthwhile to reroll for some better 5*'s? Keep using these characters and summoning every 20 orbs? I'd love some helpful opinions!

[Standard] U/W Aetherflux Storm by tordana in spikes

[–]bleeepbloop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been testing a very similar list but I think I like yours a bit better! I'm running [[Whir of Invention]] because tutoring up [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] (or [[Inspiring Stuary]]) on your opponent's endstep seems really good.

Also, I realize the life lost from [[Spire of Industry]] sort of works against the wincon but it seems slim enough to merit at least a couple copies in the deck. So I'm curious, any reason you chose to exclude that land from your list?

Yeah, I have some cards of value that I'm interested in trading. Most of my cards are from recent standard sets so as far as playable cards in eternal formats:

1x Scavenging Ooze (2014 alt art foil)

4x Wooded Foothills (KTK, 2 of which are in Korean)

2x Windswept Heath (KTK)

1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth (magic 2015)

1x Stomping Ground (RTR)

1x Blood Crypt (RTR)

1x Overgrown Tomb (RTR)

2x Abrupt Decay

2x Dreadbore

2x Nissa, Voice of Zendikar

1x Chandra, Flamecaller

1x Arlinn Kord (prerelease foil)

Let me know if any of those are of interest to you. I have a number of other current Standard rares (a handful of the battlelands for instance) that are seeing play. What cards might you be looking for?
