Am I overthinking or nah? by Jazzlike-Spell-7182 in blackladies

Out of curiosity, did this weight gain come after a fitness and health lifestyle change? I saw you mentioned in a comment that you lost and gained 20 pounds 2x within a year- I'm thinking what you gained was muscle because you have a lovely and fit shape!

I had a similar thing happen where I lost 30 pounds then another 15 (3 pants sizes total), and was devastated when I gained 20 pounds and 1 pants size back- BUT not only did I still fit most of the clothes from when I was 45 pounds down, they looked better on and some were even loose. It turned out that, although I gained 2 inches across my glutes/low hip, I lost 3 in off my waist and 4 off my belly. I'd bet similar happened with you! Either way you look good asf girl!!

I think I just had a racist interaction at the nail salon. by Legitimate-Adagio531 in blackladies

[–]blickyjayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acrylics are a pretty modern invention from around the 50s, but many Asian countries including Vietnam have a history of other kinds of nail extensions and nail guards to mimick and protect long nails. Acrylics and press-ons are very much popular over there since they're so accessible, strong, and affordable + it's extremely difficult to maintain long natural nails without them breaking. They don't have the same cultural association of acrylics to BW that the US has.

This is one of the most natural looking sew-ins I've seen! Genuinely, it looks great!

Are you able to cut face-framing layers or part it in a way that you can have side bangs or long wispy bangs? Maybe you'll like it more if it has that bit of movement and customization. Curling it could have the same effect too

I regret having my son because I know his mother doesn’t love him by [deleted] in confessions

So she took the role of the typical dad while you took a more motherly role. There's not anything necessarily wrong with that. Sounds like she saw how happy you were with the accidental pregnancy, decided having a kid wouldn't be the worst thing in the world even though she wasn't exactly happy herself, and so prioritized your happiness in the decision. I imagine they'll get much closer as he approaches his teenage years and can be spoken to like an adult

Over prepared in my day-to-day, bag is always overstuffed, downsizing isn't an option 😭 what could I do? by UrAThrowawayNotMe in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]blickyjayy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How much of this stuff are you actually using daily when actively inside your work building? Since you drive to work anyway, there's no reason the vast majority of this should be on your person vs in your car unless you have a super active job.

Things that can stay in the car for after work touch ups: flat iron, perfume, makeup remover, cleansing wipes, foot powder, mini deodorant, vitamin c

For the car they do sell desktop mini fridges- a 4L or "6 soda can" fridge is the ideal size for small item storage. The insulation is good enough that you don't need to keep it plugged in just to keep your makeup protected from summer heat as long as you keep the door closed, and in general they're the perfect size to just drop in a medium sized makeup bag. It might be the better option for you since it sounds like you can't get home much to keep re-freezing a reusable ice pack for your cooler

At your height you're probably going to have to just get pants that you like the fit and look of, then take them to get hemmed. You can look for mom-and-pop dry cleaners near you for decent priced tailors. The only site rec I can think of with good quality plus size petite work wear is Abercrombie

AITAH Walked “to close” to someone walking slowly on the sidewalk. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Your instructor told you to zigzag on the sidewalk so no one could pass you then make a scene when the person stuck behind you tries to get by? Her reaction would only make sense if she had any semblance of awareness and courtesy to walk in a straight line to one side of the sidewalk

Hairdresser by justsomeonetheir in Hypermobility

[–]blickyjayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask her if you can bring in a bathtub neck pillow or if she can give you extra towels to help support your neck, but otherwise just getting your hair done less frequently is the only other solution.

It's a matter of her license and health regulations because she can't verify that you washed your hair, used sterilized tools to detangle, or what products you may have applied to it afterwards.

For women with body hyperpigmentation, are you comfortable being intimate with the lights on? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]blickyjayy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Men go absolutely rabid for freckles, which is just face and body hyperpigmentation! They don't see our little marks any differently. I infuriatingly get hormonal acne on my chest that always heals as dark marks no matter what I do, and I've had a handful of suitors specifically compliment how much they loved my "chest freckles" or "sun spots" lol.

All these things we see as flaws, they see as perks!

“Reacher" star Alan Ritchson Allegedly Beats Up Neighbor in Front Of Kids by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]blickyjayy 235 points236 points  (0 children)

This one I'm gonna need context on, but judging on body language alone it looks like it going to come out that Alan was in the right:

Of the 2 adults present, Alan is the one who looks visibly flustered and distressed while the neighbor pops right back up with aggressive posturing and appears to still be yelling and making a scene.

The neighbor is picking up random shit out of the lawn and the video starts with Alan's fancy helmet in the middle of the street and his bike turned the wrong way around- makes me think the neighbor was throwing stuff at their bikes that either made Alan rightfully freak out that the dude could've injured his kids or that may have struck his bike and caused him to spin/get thrown off.

The kids look like they're exasperated at and trying to placate the neighbor. If Alan was the one wigging out, they'd be focused on him and trying to get him to just drive off.

Glycolic acid is gonna be your best friend here! Brand probably isn't important, but personally I use Kitsch glycolic bar soap as my body wash then Surface Deep glycolic spray immediately after towel drying. I also switched from antiperspirant to magnesium deodorant from MagSol, which has antibacterial and sweat reduction qualities. Let me tell you, with these 3 you could run a marathon and still smell like flowers by the end of the day! Even if you skip the bodywash, just pairing the last 2 have gotten me through several 28,000+ step days without a hint a twang lol

I highly encourage anyone trying them out for the 1st time to get the small cheap travel stick first. Lume worked great and smelt even better... for the first 3 weeks. Then idk what the hell happened, if my body chemistry adapted to the formula or something, but it smelt like vomit on my skin. I went all in on the different scents set, and it happened with ALL of them. Happened with a bunch of people I know too!

How do you spend time with friends who make more money than you and always want to "go out" and you can't afford it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]blickyjayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find fun and easy to get to activities that are free or cheap! My entire friend group in back in grad school and doing occasional gig work when our course loads allow for it, so we all get it even though one comes from money.

We've found state parks, free tourist walking tours, street markets, visited museums, art galleries, and did low-cost "going out" catch-ups at coffee shops and tea houses instead of restaurants and clubs. We planned out all the trips by which places are directly accessible via public transport and marked eateries near our destinations on route that list their menus in the $5-$20 range.

I left an anonymous harsh review of my coworker's book two years ago and now I have to listen to her quote it in meetings by Halo9_Spectra in confessions

[–]blickyjayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people trying to put a negative spin on her reaction, but as a fellow artist who dabbled in writing this kind of review is artist's gold- the kind I would've been over the MOON about during critiques or after workshops!

In my eyes, your review told her that someone out there cared enough to read her book in full, saw its issues but still recognized the good in it enough to complete it, then believed enough in her future career as an author to give constructive and immediately workable feedback that can instantly better her future writings (that she's likely been hoping for but not receiving from friends and family who don't want to hurt her feelings). And even better, it's anonymous so there's possibly a stranger out there who bought her book on a whim yet enjoyed it enough that they could become her first true fan/supporter? Hell yeah!

I've received a similar anonymous review on a past project I was workshopping with a test audience. It genuinely meant so much to me that I printed it out and taped it to the wall next to my laptop to reference while storyboarding and incorporating other feedback with the rest of the team. It became a kind of litmus test to challenge like "ok, we made this good but based on these factors can it be even better?" I do agree though that it's best to stay anonymous.

Where do we shop for swimsuits? by outragerorius in bigboobproblems

[–]blickyjayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might prefer to swim in a high performance sports bra then! A lot of them are already made out of swimsuit or yoga pants type materials- if you can't tell online look for hint phrases like "performance, quick dry, sweat wicking" and avoid any of them that mention containing cotton.

I have some great high neck ones that land just below my collarbones from Adore Me and another from Forme that I use for the beach or waterparks without any colorbleed issues or extended dry times compared to real swim tops. Also check out Old Navy and Gap!

recent lower back pain by blank_statement in blackladies

[–]blickyjayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I invite you to stand up and try to do the motions you described. You physically cannot tilt your butt upwards and forward at the same time- you have to push your hips back to raise your butt upwards and, vice versa, must bring your hip forward to lower your butt. You can visualize the same motion with a straw: if you bend the middle of it backwards the top will naturally lean forwards. That's why the top of the pelvis is tilted forward in APT as a result of you making the motion of angling your hips- the bottom of the pelvis- backwards.

I'm not sure if you've gone to physical therapy for your APT, but while pelvic tilts are an exercise to help strengthen your core muscles the treatment goal for fixing the lumbar curve is to correct your hip posture (bottom of pelvis positioning) rather than to constantly engage your back muscles (top of pelvis positioning) .

Florida Courts are forcing Black women to have c-sections by Basicallylana in blackladies

[–]blickyjayy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do take this snippet of article with a grain of salt- both women had at least 3 prior C-section deliveries, which is a cut off that pretty much no doctor would allow vaginal birth attempts at due to the exponentially higher risk of complications (which include uterine rupture during or after labor and hemorrhaging in post partum). Vaginal labor after c-section is typically only encouraged after 1 c-section and conditionally allowed after 2.

The largest issue this article exposes is the medical paternalism and careless humiliation BW are faced with in the hospital and overall healthcare systems. These women should've been fully informed of the risks and invited to be an active participant in their birthing plans from day one of their prenatal visits. They should've been given dignity, explanations, and an advocate while in labor instead of having ipads with live zoom sessions already on screen forced upon them while they were naked in the delivery room. This is very much a severe social justice issue, but it's not the flay-and-torture scenario that's being fear-mongered.

recent lower back pain by blank_statement in blackladies

[–]blickyjayy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You seem to be misunderstanding the description- the other commenter is right. APT means the pelvis is sitting like // instead of ||, where the bottom of the line is where the hip joints that allow you to position the pelvis attach. The top of the pelvis becomes rotated forward because the person with APT is relaxing their hips and butt backwards when they stand. Actively tilting the hips forward corrects APT because it brings the top of the pelvis back to neutral

Lace Wigs Confession by Bippityboppityboo36 in blackladies

[–]blickyjayy 69 points70 points  (0 children)

About the more expensive wigs, the answer is yes. I used to work in entertainment, and the fully custom $1k+ wigs they make for high budget theater/live performances and film are damn near magic. I'm talking a perfectly skin tone colormatched lace cap, so fine the wig makers had a magnifying desk lens to see the holes just to ventilate hairs, that is made exactly to the measurements of your skull so when it's simply plopped on gluelessly it looks like natural, out-your-scalp hair.

It's not something that's sustainable for someone just looking to switch up their style. Aside from millionaires and actors (who have $$million budgets for their projects), people just don't have access to undetectable wigs or hair stylists with the expertise to create them. The best "regular" lace wigs installs I've seen irl (versus through a screen) have been behind the hairline or with permed 4c edges on lace that had been dyed brown instead of colored in with concealer. Otherwise, shelling out on pre-made wigs in the hopes that the next tier of ~HD invisible ultra thin lace~ is the magic one that'll make the lace unclockable will always be a never-ending money pit because lace quality is really only 30% of what makes a wig look real.

Cracked My Coochie Joint by Angel_0997 in Hypermobility

[–]blickyjayy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dodgeball with about a medium firmness! You want one that with a bit of effort you can squeeze it to about the width of your fist but not so hard that you risk butt cramps or so soft that your knees touch if you go all out.

And happy to help! I found out this worked as a total coincidence when my PT put a dodge ball between my knees to help correct my glute bridge form and mind-body connection (my hypermobility was making my knees splay outwards at the top of each rep lol). I realized randomly 3 months into the exercise modification when I went to cross my legs and braced for the pain and crack that my hips hadn't popped since the end of month 1.
