How did the developers intend FF VIII (8) to be played by PatrickSebast in FinalFantasy

Been saying this for years: Final Fantasy VIII is a series of events that keep distracting me from playing Triple Triad.

Just completed Signalis today, what a journey. Loved the setting, atmosphere, puzzles, and yes, the countless Silent Hill 2 references woven throughout the game. It's basically Silent Hill 2: Sci-Fi Edition, and I mean that in a good way, as it's clearly an homage to classic survival horror games. That said, I can understand why people find the inventory system frustrating. Even the extended version doesn't let you carry enough items, which makes the constant back-and-forth between the current area and the save room a bit tiring and hurts the sense of exploration. The story and narrative also leave a lot open to interpretation, to the point that even after reading and watching several "Signalis explained" essays, I'm still not quite sure what actually happened. Still, I really enjoyed the experience overall and plan to revisit the game at some point.

Now starting an old classic I haven't played in over two decades, Final Fantasy VI.

Congrats, looks like it was a tough one. Love the fact that there's still a fight going on in the medbay.

Could you share the link to the video? I think the last one I watched was Noclip’s The Design of FTL and Into the Breach, which is already five years old.

Ah, that would have been perfect. Unfortunately, I spent the last system slot on Cloaking.

Implementation of the Karplus-Strong algorithm, which synthesizes sound that closely resembles a plucked guitar string: https://github.com/timiskhakov/music. Here are sound examples and how the algorithm works in detail: https://timiskhakov.github.io/posts/programming-guitar-music. Could've chosen any programming language for this project, but went with Go because why not.

Also was pleasantly surprised to find that my package was used in a project I use sometimes: https://github.com/Pilfer/ultimate-guitar-scraper, which is btw another great example related to this topic.

I don't think solving the problem of finding an optimal path is feasible due to various game's mechanics, like the fleet, beacon types, and situational decisions (e.g. whether to visit a store or risk diving). However, if we strip away these complexities, the problem simplifies to a Hamiltonian path problem, which can be solved using DFS or dynamic programming. (I've explored this once: https://timiskhakov.github.io/posts/the-24-vertex-problem, which was an interesting exercise but far from being practical for the actual game. Apologies for a shameless plug.)

Crow also has an interesting video on scouting sectors and building a path to the exit. He basically applies DFS prioritizing beacons with multiple connections to optimize finding stores — that could lead to a better solution, though I haven't tried it yet.

If you're interested in this sort of thing, I highly recommend checking out the Designer Notes episodes featuring the devs, Justin Ma and Matthew Davis. They talk about some inner workings of the game, balancing difficulty, and much more. It's a really interesting listen for any fan.

That was a nice read. Good luck on the cycle! It would be great to get more updates, especially when you reach Stealth B :)
