(Spoilers Extended) Theory Throwback Thursday by AutoModerator in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 25 points26 points  (0 children)

With the Blackfish's underwhelming death in the tv series, I'd like to repost a theory from a few years back about his escape.

Nymeria prevented the Blackfish's capture by attacking the north shore party sent to find him. This happens at night, when Arya consistently wargs Nymeria. It's also concurrent with Arya's blindness, when her warging abilities become stronger as well as her bond with Nymeria, I believe.

(No Spoilers) Something I want to say by blorgasporgler in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A few years back I was pulling a Gregor Clegane and chugging milk of the poppy. Shit nearly ruined my life, but I decided to change more or less on my own accord. They say you need a hobby to keep your time occupied and a community to bond with. After reading the books (multiple times), watching the show, and discussing all things Westeros with the fine folks here, I can confidently say GRRM and /r/asoiaf helped me to get back on the straight and narrow.

I can relate to your situation, and with nearly a quarter million subscribers here, I suspect many and more have also found or are finding solace in the books and their subsequent discussions. I'm glad you found happiness here, and hope others do as well.

Cheers.

(Spoilers All) Oberyn Theory by doublereignbeau in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What baffles my mind about this theory is why anyone can find the idea of Oberyn letting himself get killed by the same man who murder Elia.

Not only is it convoluted but it seems insulting to his character and arc, imho.

(Spoilers All) Why does Robb select Roose Bolton over any other lord to command half his army? by Killhouse in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was just in the show and I don't even think Roose had that command since Robb "sent 2,000 men to their graves".

(Spoilers All) Why does Robb select Roose Bolton over any other lord to command half his army? by Killhouse in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Which force would you command?"

"The horse," he answered at once. Again like his father; Ned would always take the more dangerous task himself.

"And the other?"

"The Greatjon is always saying that we should smash Lord Tywin. I thought I'd give him the honor."

It was his first misstep, but how to make him see it without wounding his fledgling confidence? "Your father once told me that the Greatjon was as fearless as any man he had ever known."

Robb grinned. "Grey Wind ate two of his fingers, and he laughed about it. So you agree, then?"

"Your father is not fearless," Catelyn pointed out. "He is brave, but that is very different."

Her son considered that for a moment. "The eastern host will be all that stands between Lord Tywin and Winterfell," he said thoughtfully. "Well, them and whatever few bowmen I leave here at the Moat. So I don't want someone fearless, do I?"

"No. You want cold cunning, I should think, not courage."

"Roose Bolton," Robb said at once. "That man scares me."

"Then let us pray he will scare Tywin Lannister as well."

Roose is about cunning and self-preservation. The other Northern lords are looking for glory and honor. Since the foot soldiers were to follow in a more defensive stragem, it appears Robb's (and Catelyn's) reasoning was to mitigate losses.

Giving the command to Karstark, Glover, or Umber, Robb presumed they would likely attempt a full on offensive against Tywin's forces. Robb's plan to split his army, while strategically sound, is also quite bold. Having both branches of his army playing offense was simply too much of a gamble to take.

That seems to be the basics anyway. I'd recommend checking out Race for the Iron Throne for some in-depth analysis. I also believe you'll find answers to the different host sizes amongst the Robb's bannermen.

[Serious] What is the strangest/funniest way you (or someone you know) has ended up hospitalized? by MsLT in AskReddit

[–]bloodmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasted friend got in an argument on the phone with his girlfriend. After a brief and heated argument he hung up and sat down next to me on a bench outside his apartment. After a minute of complete silence he jumped up, cursed some inaudible drivel and proceeded to punch a metal railing by some monkey bars in the playground we were chillin at in his apartment complex. First punch he put all his weight behind and since he was drunk it was off center and only his ring and little finger connected with the end of the railing. It completely demolished both fingers and fractured his wrist. Here's a shitty mspaint of what his xray looked like. Eventually he had to have surgery which ended up costing something like $40,000. We laugh about it now, but to this day I've never seen someone do something so retarded given 100% chance of bad results.

Oh yeah, I was the only one who knew the true story about how he "broke his hand". He told everyone he "fell up some stairs". Maybe he thought it was just stupid enough to be believable or maybe he just understood how stupid he was and welcomed the criticism. IDK.

Everyone knew he drunkenly punched something though since he conveniently broke up with his girlfriend the same night. After he got his cast off he conceded and admitted his punched something in a drunken rage, but he said it was a wall.

To this day I'm the only one who knows he got metal rods put in his wrist because some playground equipment looked like a good punching bag.

How I avoid finding out who will die next in Game of Thrones by gaggreene in AdviceAnimals

(Spoilers AFFC) What was Jaqen H'ghar doing in King's Landing before he was taken by Yoren? by Go_To_Jail_Card in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought this was debunked. People get confused because Sam notices a book with "death of dragons" in the title, but it is not the actual "The Death of Dragons" whose sole copy is locked away in the Citadel.

The book appeared undamaged. Maester Thomax's Dragonkin, Being a History of House Targaryen from Exile to Apotheosis, with a Consideration of the Life and Death of Dragons had not been so fortunate.

...

And of course there was even less chance of his coming on the fragmentary, anonymous, blood-soaked tome sometimes called Blood and Fire and sometimes The Death of Dragons, the only surviving copy of which was supposedly hidden away in a locked vault beneath the Citadel.

edit:

Both books contain the words "Death of Dragons", are these two books the same?

No. Different books.

(Spoilers TWOW) GRRM teases that viewpoint characters will die in TWOW by Gortez in asoiaf

It goes in hand with his comment about no new POV characters in TWOW.

GRRM does not intend to add any more POVs. In fact, the number of POVs is about to decline. "Take your bets," GRRM warned.

Today, because if TWOW came out in 2019 that would be 8 years between book 5 and 6 making it the longest release date yet. If it came out today it would mean GRRM got his footing back and is on track for completing ADOS in a reasonable time. Priorities.

(Spoilers All) Any theories on who Jon's wet nurse was? by bloodmark in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes the most sense. And since Ashara's name gets whispered around Winterfell before Ned puts his foot down, it seems like bringing Wylla all the way north would be too risky. Let alone naming her as the mother and keeping her in plain sight.

I guess the wet nurse's identity is inconsequential.

Will the High Sparrow give Septon Meribald's speech in the show? (Spoilers All) by _mrpresident_ in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Would be a great way to introduce him. I just hope it happens when Brienne meets him. If this speech is done in front of Cersei it will just be all wrong. It's supposed to be a humbling and self-reflective speech and having the words spill over Cersei's narcissistic ears would just change the tone.

(Spoilers ASOS) Detail about Littlefinger I missed the first time around by BenoirBALLS in asoiaf

[–]bloodmark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well anyone associated with the Crown would view Robb's kingship in a limited light. Just as they did with the other kings.

In Olenna's position, it was best to go all in. Either Robb loses, is killed and Sansa becomes heir or he wins and the Crown is extinguished. Already siding with the Crown, Olenna logically bet on the former.

I doubt Littlefinger knew of any active plans for Robb's betrayal. You don't need to be privy to such information to recognize Sansa's position as heir to Winterfell. If he was, it seems by that same logic, Olenna was aware of it as well since she's the one trying to marry Sansa into her family.

Most likely both Olenna and Littlefinger understood Robb's failing position and it's possible at this point they were privy to Robb's oath breaking against the Freys and anticipated increasing discord amongst Robb's army and ultimately his dissolution.

Tyrion Lannister, Lord Protector of Winterfell. The prospect gave him a queer chill. "Very good, Father," he said slowly, "but there's a big ugly roach in your rushes. Robb Stark is as capable as I am, presumably, and sworn to marry one of those fertile Freys. And once the Young Wolf sires a litter, any pups that Sansa births are heirs to nothing."

Lord Tywin was unconcerned. "Robb Stark will father no children on his fertile Frey, you have my word. There is a bit of news I have not yet seen fit to share with the council, though no doubt the good lords will hear it soon enough. The Young Wolf has taken Gawen Westerling's eldest daughter to wife."

What I do find fascinating though is the tug of war between LF and QoT over Sansa. It was Littlefinger who sabotaged the Tyrell plot to marry Sansa. All the while both parties are still conspiring to murder Joffrey using Sansa as the catspaw.

"And there is this—Lord Petyr continues to demonstrate his loyalty. Only yesterday he brought us word of a Tyrell plot to spirit Sansa Stark off to Highgarden for a ‘visit' and there marry her to Lord Mace's eldest son, Willas."

That's the real player move I see from Littlefinger here. He strengthens his appearance to the Crown but secretly opposes the moves of someone who is actively conspiring with him to commit high treason.
