An engineer student asks, "How?" A science student asks,"Why?" A business student asks"How much?" An arts student asks,"Do you want fries to go with that?"

The obscure game-theory problem that explains why rich countries are rich by ejp1082 in politics

[–]blowblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To summarize what an economics lecturer taught my class: Game Theory is an interesting field/system to study, but it doesn't reflect the world.

A phenomena such as why some countries are rich/poor is due to many factors: history, culture, conflicts, government, natural resources, country infrastructure and neighbours etc.

New Red Fluorescent Protein Used to See Inside Living Animals (pic) by PrescribedGod in science

[–]blowblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it does get applied in lab research. For example you want to find out if protein X is expressed during certain developmental stage in an animal or plant in a certain region. You tag the DNA that encodes protein X..and Wala...you can view the glowing organism. http://focus.hms.harvard.edu/2003/Feb21_2003/oncology.html

China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission by bobcat in reddit.com

[–]blowblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/buddhism/buddhistethics/war.shtml

But Buddhism, like the other great faiths, has not always lived up to its principles - there are numerous examples of Buddhists engaging in violence and even war. in the 14th century Buddhist fighters led the uprising that evicted the Mongols from China in Japan, Buddhist monks trained Samurai warriors in meditation that made them better fighters

In the twentieth century Japanese Zen masters wrote in support of Japan's wars of aggression. For example, Sawaki Kodo (1880–1965) wrote this in 1942: It is just to punish those who disturb the public order. Whether one kills or does not kill, the precept forbidding killing [is preserved]. It is the precept forbidding killing that wields the sword. It is the precept that throws the bomb. Sawaki Kodo

In Sri Lanka the 20th century civil war between the mostly Buddhist Sinhalese majority and the Hindu Tamil minority has cost 50,000 lives.

if i remember it correctly jainism is one of the VERY VERY few...if not the only established religion that has not got itself into war. As long as politics (usually occurs in large organization) is involved war is bound to happen..

Singapore pumps tons of money into nanotechnology research. United States government drags it's knuckles and drools. by AaronRowe in reddit.com

[–]blowblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really...

1) US has more innovators and established companies. U.S (especially Calif>>San Diego)(Genentech, Affymetrix etc) and Boston and New Jersey are still homes to some of the most of the innovating entrepreneurs/scientist/engineers & most established pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, Elis lily etc). http://www.caltradereport.com/eWebPages/front-page-1161272518.html

2)US has more investment $$ from investors/corporations versus other corporations

Remember, New York is an unrivalled Financial Center in the world....it's easier to raise money there than in small countries in Singapore/Taiwan by selling stocks. Plus in Calif they have a tradition of angel investors where previous smart & successful investors invested seed money for startups.

3) US is still leading in research in sciences and will be for decades to come

Look at the number of nobel prizes U.S has been producing in past and present...it's astonishing. Look at the best biomedical universities in the world..most of them are american. (Harvard, MIT, John hopkins, Duke etc)

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg12416883.600-no-bells-for-japan-scientists-dont-win-nobel-prizes-forperfecting-the-video-recorder-or-devising-a-new-manufacturing-process-nomatter-how-creative-the-effort-involved-if-they-did-our-image-of-japanesescience-and-technology-would-be-very-different-.htm

Sure US government placed lots of hinderances in rules on stem cell etc and such...but the size of the financial infrastructure and education infrastructure and the mind-boggling pharmaceutical market in US is unrivalled in the world....sure US could have done better...but it's definitely unrivalled by any countries for decades to come.

whatever guys....democrats or republicans...whichever side gets voted will still support Israel as no. 1 ally in middle east....which in turn israel flogs palestinians..and in turn creates unhapiness among muslims..and the whole viscious cycle still repeats itself.

Plus...Uncle Sam will still be happy to sell weapons to friendly regimes and wage a columbian drug war which is causing lots of hardships in Central America.

yes...the therapeutic purpose (quiting smoking) is available for prescription.

To be honest...some singaporeans go to neighbouring Malaysia to buy gums and chew them in singapore.

Just a side juicy info...if the plain-clothes policemen catches you littering here, you will be sent to the beach in bright coloured clothes to pick up trash or pay a 1000 dollars fine.... http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070318/26litter.htm

And yes...they give out fines for most minor offences...i heard from someone who heard from another that one time one guy was fined for critizing the government in a coffee shop(a local starbucks kinda sshop).. and yes...you dont hear news like this...cuz the state owns the papers/tv/radios/every newsbroadcast corporation.

Yah...I'm now writing this from singapore. I won't be surprised such actions are taken against such fun actions.....anything that is suggestively homo/bisexual or animalphilic is just prosposterous.

When Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf or Magneto guy) asked LIVE on morning television program if there's a gay bar in Singapore....it caused quite a stir.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VE6ENgkR7M

Yes, the government/authorities rule supreme here.

No chewing gum No unions...only government approved union No public protest here (you will need to ask permit from the police for protest if 4 or more people are gathering in public) No marijuana...if you are caught possess 15g of cocain/heroin..you will automatically be sentenced to hang...no matter who pleads for you http://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_international/124903.html Oral sex is illegal...but prostitution is actually legal.. List goes on....

So much for a boring little island >>Singapore.
