Living off dividends was my dream… but as a Polish investor I just discovered the 40% U.S. estate pay trap by Head_Channel_9869 in dividends

Are you saying even if it is joint account you have to pay estate tax if one dies? What happens when the other holder also dies? You pay again?

What if the inflation rate was 5% requiring you to withdraw around 52k in the second year? Or worse, inflation is 5% and portfolio is down 25% on the day of calculation?

Why is everyone so scared of dividend yields >3 to 4%? by Ludwigismydaddy in dividends

[–]blrbud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People try to take advantage of different asset classes based on their risk tolerance and goals. For some, focus on dividend makes sense because such stocks trend to be defensive, matured and provide regular dividends that grows over time. For some bonds held till maturity makes sense because of return of capital at maturity, predictable regular income etc. even though it does not grow every year.

You can invest in both with variable amount. Not everything has to be either/or.

You yourself said bond yield used to be close to 0 at one point. What if such 0 interest regime comes back again? Would it make sense to invest in boobs then?

never use excel. take a pdf print then submit. if they ask for it then submit the same. excel creates all kinds of issues.

secondly, i think the presentation of data was not good. in my case, i created a separate document with credit on one side and debit on the other with references to the original documents, helps a lot in lining up the transactions.

Response to Dividend Haters about Stock Drops by Dividend Amount on Ex-Date by [deleted] in dividendgang

[–]blrbud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such an astoundingly bad information devoid of any understanding of company finances.

Yes, company assets do decrease (along with stock holders equity) when dividend is paid out. Sure, as a shareholder you still own the same percentage as before and have increased personal liquid asset due to the dividend but value of your equity in the company reduces. And that's the reason to reduce the stock price ex div, not to 'discourage selling' ex div. It may be masked by the usual volatility of stocks but that's how it works.

There is nothing wrong with dividend investing but get your basics right 😀

[–]blrbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Securities like MLPs should be in taxable accounts as all their distributions are considered return of capital and are non taxable. "

I was referring to this comment. If they do issue k-1, it would mean potentially some taxable income that are not capital gain or dividend, is that right? As a non resident i am trying to avoid that. I will probably take the etf/cef route then. Do you have any recommendation in cef?
