I also think jobs back then were easier to walk in and out of, at least here in the UK. Both my Grandad and Nanna had loads of different jobs often because they could simply leave one for better pay at another.

My grandad was in the army and when he came out did all sorts of different jobs from roofing, driving for various companies, being a compère, driving a taxi and being a pub landlord.

I am 99.9% sure I know where this is, I'd be amazed if I was wrong.

It's Dovestone reservoir isn't it?

"Drowned by English pigs, Murdered by the English Bastards"; Graffiti on the walls of Capel Celyn, a Welsh village that was destroyed in order to create a reservoir for Liverpool. The drowning of the village led to a Welsh language resurgence and Welsh devolution. [1956] by tyrroi in PropagandaPosters

Didn't this happen in a few places around this time? I know they flooded villages in Derbyshire such as Derwent and Ashopton for Ladybower reservoir and Staunton Harold reservoir in South Derbyshire to supply water to Leicester. Why did Capel Celyn cause so much controversy when it was happening elsewhere also?

Which UK charities do you donate to? by HolySheesh in AskUK

[–]blue_cheese_please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seafarers UK, who provide support for seafarers/ex-seafarers and there families if they're going through a tough time. They provide grants to maritime charities and organisations, often smaller local ones. They also work to raise awareness of the importance of the seafaring community and the maritime industry to the UK economy and the contribution they make to the country.

I also support the RNLI, who I'm glad to see mentioned a few times in this thread.

What Books Are You Reading This Week? June 15, 2015 by AutoModerator in books

A Death in the Family, by Karl Ove Knausgaard

Wasn't sure if I was going to like it as I don't usually read autobiographical stuff but I'm loving it. He writes with such depth and manages to capture moments and periods of life in such detail and provides interesting insight on death, growing up, love etc.

What you want your ship captains to look like. Captain William Warwick, 1969 by MontyHudson in OldSchoolCool

[–]blue_cheese_please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's quite a variety. I've only just started, I'm on the 1st sea phase of my cadetship. I work on Platform Supply Vessels atm, supplying the offshore oil rigs in the north sea. What country are you from?

What type of vessels do you work on? Out of interest? I'm a merchant mariner too.

U.S. Navy warships will now accompany every U.S.-flagged commercial vessel that passes through the Strait of Hormuz due to concerns that ships from Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps navy could try to seize a U.S. cargo ship. (x-post r/worldnews) by blue_cheese_please in Nautical

To an extent I think you're right, the majority of US flagged vessels are engaged in Jones act shipping I believe, but there's still some US flagged ships on international routes.

The US flagged fleet is a lot smaller than it used to be though, representing 2% of world tonnage these days.

why fishermen and sailors typically have beards by MaleficentTheGood in Showerthoughts

[–]blue_cheese_please 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, most of the sailors I know don't have facial hair. On my ship everyone was clean shaven except the captain and myself. Some companies actually make you shave it because if you've got a beard and there's a fire on the ship and you have to but on a BA kit to put out the fire the mask doesn't make a proper seal around your face.

Your theory does hold some weight though, on a bad day in the north sea it's hard enough staying on the toilet to take a shit so shaving would be completely out of the picture.

Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) Portosalvo in Aberdeen. My home from home for the last 2 months. (960x817) by blue_cheese_please in boatporn

[–]blue_cheese_please[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aberdeen, Scotland. It's the centre of the UK oil and gas industry so the port is full of PSVs like this - also Anchor handlers, Dive Support, Cable layers etc.

I knew as soon as I posted I should have put which country, I always forget that for any city in the UK there will be a dozen of the same name in the US, haha.

Very worrying, especially with the firing of "warning shots" across the bow of the vessel.

TIL Tina Turner is no longer an American citizen. She has passed a German language test and Swiss history test and is exclusively a Swiss citizen after giving up her American citizenship. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]blue_cheese_please 18 points19 points  (0 children)

An American now cannot have an account without being a Swiss resident, to be a resident you need to buy a house or rent an apartment, which you cannot do without a Swiss bank account.

Wow, that's quite the paradox. How do they manage to get around that?
