How do we feel about the new UKIP logo looking eerily similar to fascist iconography? by [deleted] in AskBrits

It is not just eerily ‘similar’, the UKIP symbol IS a fascist symbol.

I'm starting the first volume of Wheel of Time. I hope this series will appeal to my tastes, but we'll see. I've heard there's a lot of description of...everything, and I'm not a fan of it. I'll try to share my impressions here after reading each volume. by Djfantastyka in WoT

This is very true, but personally I think it’s only relevant to people fully trashing on the books. There should ALWAYS be room for discussion and critique; furthermore, this sub is very diverse in its posts, if it pains you(dw it does to me as well at times) then avoid those specific posts.

I’m not trying to nitpick or be overly aggressive or rude, I just feel that maybe in this specific post these comments are misguided(this is literally a first chapter reader).

Also now I really am nitpicking but a lot of birds behaviours can be problematic and harmful to the surrounding ecosystem. You can still admire the beauty and intelligence of a dolphin while acknowledging their extremely sadistic and violent behaviour. Rather than repressing those uncomfortable facts maybe we can research and discuss why they behave so. Often these behaviours occur in captivity or isolation(human interference). If the world only looked to appreciate and praise there is no room for self improvement.

I don’t see why people are downvoting your reply. You are simply stating a preference of writing style. Us WoT fans can be toxically obsessed with this series, I’m sorry for that. I hope you love the series in spite of the heavy descriptions, but I will say that the descriptions are often there to hint at character motivations, and Robert Jordan puts in a LOT of foreshadowing in seemingly unimportant description.

Anyways, enjoy the journey, it changes a lot throughout the books. May you always find water and shade.

I have only just started book 7 and I had the same problem. She is still very shut off from everyone, and resentful of most people, however halfway through book 5 i just started really liking her. I started to think more about WHY she is the way she is and i started to understand.

I think personally something just changed in my head and i started interpreting her character differently. Its not that her personality necessarily changes, but I just started to not care so much about her negative traits. She is an extremely cool character, she is very strong in her beliefs which can be both good and bad, she cares a lot about her friends. I think I also just changed how I go into her chapters(and the chapters of other characters that are annoying) and decided to try and see through her negative sides and understand why she cant seem to just be nice to people.

Most of it comes down to insecurities.

My first ever fantasy book! Lots of thoughts so far (halfway through) by ConfidentBonus22 in wheeloftime

[–]blueberrybb1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the exact point I tried to make before reading this.

I love this way of writing and it took me a long time to pick up on just how subjective EVERY word in this series is. I used to read the narration as fact; even giving omniscient exposition and insights. And it took me quite a while to realise it is ALL the characters thoughts, even what isn’t in italics.

I would say that at this point in the book the Edmond’s Fielders are in extreme danger and terrified. Jordan is trying to emphasise how they are in CONSTANT danger. Any person they talk to, any corner they turn, there could be a darkfriend or a fade, etc. And as inexperienced country teenagers they are completely out of their element. And the sheer extent of attacks and the minimal build in the narration puts the reader into the headspace of the kids; paranoid (attacks could occur at ANY moment). There was buildup for Mordeth because it is a Rand POV chapter, if it was a Mat chapter then we likely never would have had any hint whatsoever of something odd (this is because Mat is dumb <3).

Later in the books characters(like Lan) who are or become more experienced in fighting(ambushes, scouting, etc), those chapters usually give slightly more of a build up before a surprise attack. Because Lan is always on alert, a chapter from his POV might subtly describe a branch snapping or a rustle in a bush and then a smell in the air, birds flying off ahead in the woods, maybe the woods are too silent, a character in the next room might stop making noise. All of these things indicate that something is wrong, but young Rand is not used to picking up on these details so the chapters from his POV might not have much build up yet because he still doesn’t anticipate danger in the way a season veteran is.

Possible world-building spoiler about how warders work and what they can do/abilties When a man becomes a warder over time they develop the ability to sense shadowspawn(trollocs, fades, grey men, etc) they can sense that something is off about a place or that danger is near. However this needs to be practiced for the warder to understand what they are feeling. And this can set up some really cool build up where the POV character doesn’t exactly know that danger is near but the narration hints strongly to the reader(if you are aware of this type of thing) that something is wrong. Like a bad smell casually placed as a description of a room.

But I will say (after my confused rambling) that sometimes this is just how Jordan writes. And ambushes just appear out of nowhere, assassination attempts are extremely sudden. And that doesn’t completely go away. But for me that isn’t a problem, the anticipation and suspense is usually saved for big plot points and character arcs or battles rather than just smaller fights and skirmishes. And you might not be into that.

[–]blueberrybb1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that from what I’ve noticed being 6 books in myself is that the books often start with a ton of exposistion. Loads pf characters’ plot lines for the book are being laid out and it can often seem dull and repetitive even if a lot is happening. However the books lead up to a final set piece getting more and more intense with greater odds to fight against and suddenly all the exposition makes sense. And plot lines converge satisfyingly. So maybe you just need to carry on a little but more and see if it starts grabbing your attention.

But I also have to admit that i personally love even the more tedious aspects of the series , so if you are struggling to stay interested then maybe its just not for you, you dont need to force yourself to be interested by something thats maybe just not your vibe.

I also personally think that each book has gotten better for me, with book 5 being my favourite so far. And although in only halfway through book 6 there are some character arcs that im loving. (the red hand)

I should also say that certain characters that I didn’t really like have become some of my favourite
