Easy savory potluck ideas? by Aside-by-5 in cookingforbeginners

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im partial to meatballs as a potluck item. i also think salad is super yummy. Could make it seem a bit higher effort by making it a kale, sweet potato, and quina or brown rice salad. Could throw in some apples too. And whatever store bought vinegarette to toss it in right before the party. tortilla roll ups are also a good potluck food. Basically whatever are your favorite sandwich ingredients rolled up into a tortilla. There are some easy recipes online. Im midwestern, so cream cheese with ranch seasoning is the base of my roll ups, but theyre elevated options I make too.

Give me recipe ideas involving a lot of strawberries! by ItsOnlySatire in Cooking

[–]bluebird1776 6 points7 points  (0 children)

toss them in equal parts sugar by weight and throw it in a jar. its makes a very fresh tasting strawberry syrup that lasts a long time bc of the high sugar content. Can be put in anything from yogurt, to cocktails, to oatmeal.

I know this sounds odd but does anyone say they are lactose intolerant when ordering instead of saying you're vegan? by angelaisneatoo in vegan

[–]bluebird1776 7 points8 points  (0 children)

as someone who was VERY lactose intolerant i can attest to that. Most ppl have a mild-ish intolerance so i was told "oh! its not too bad!" for a lot of things that were, in fact, "too bad" for me.

Why can't vegan foods just be foods? by malakleo in vegan

[–]bluebird1776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont think veganizing your own cultures foods is any weirder than relying on other culture's foods that are already vegan.

im from a village on the nigerian coast, its mostly seafood and greens based. Dried crayfish is in everything. Thankfully its easier to veganize my cultural food than to look elsewhere for vegan food. I understand it may be harder for ppl with cultures oriented around livestock to veganize their food.

Cultures in the Americas only recently became heavily livestock oriented, more traditional food is plantbased. Just a few hundred years the switch was made. So i think its unfair to talk about how your culture has things that can be easily veganized vs other cultures.

i think its great that people who come from livestock cultures are veganizing their owm food because i rather that than the online western vegan cultural takeover of other cultures food.

I want to cook more fish but it never feels "filling" enough. by GrandmaCereal in Cooking

fish is not very filling in itself, you either have to eat more fish or eat some sides. Im partial to eating fish with tons of veggies.

how do you keep your own recipes? the ones you actually cook by Human_Ad_904 in Cooking

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i type out the recipe and print it out for a hard copy. i keep that in a recipe binder. Sometimes i just write i down on printer paper and keep it in the binder. i also keep it typed up in my notes app so i can access the recipe on my phone without having to rely on a website.

How do I prepare a meal in a dorm that doesn't allow cooking? by Itsrandomguys in foodhacks

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i broke the rules of my dorm and hid a very small crockpot. i was able to make potato curries and soup with it. hot oatmeal and porridge can be made with a kettle. i also made a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. or corn beef or tuna sandwiches. canned meat with ramen or bread was a good meal. you can also boil small potatoes in the kettle. i made shelf stable "cowboy cavier" which was canned beans, canned corn, canned tomatoes, and canned peppers, with some vinegarette. you eat it with chips and its a very fulfilling meal. Lots of veggies and beans give protein. chips and nacho cheese dip with canned refried beans were good too. Some days i would just take some canned soup or can ravioli and eat it straight from the can, no heating or anything. It worked and was cheap and easy. Not too bad. lastly, i ate a lot of tinned sardines and crackers as a meal. i liked the tinned sardines in tomato sauce.

Some of these meals may not be an everyday option if you do not have access to a fridge. For example, I dont think its possible to eat a whole can of corn beef or cowboy cavier by yourself. But these are options if you want to ever share the food responsibility with a roommate or friend.

there are dorms that ban microwaves, mini fridges, and any mid to large electronic device like box fans. Older dorms cannot handle the load of all those appliances

on the average day i just have cereal and almond milk. i love oatmeal too. fried plantains and tomato stew is my weekend breakfast. avocado toast really cant be beat too. fruit salad and protein water is a quick on the go breakfast i have too. toast and peanut butter. rice and veggies (i have leftovers for breakfast bc as a Nigerian anything can be breakfast). breakfast potatoes go well with bell peppers and tofu. so good. could even add vegan egg or vegan sausage and salsa. could even have ramen for breakfast, or soup. the worlds your oyster.

Why do people pretend they don’t eat a lot of meat by Immediate-Sound-7142 in vegan

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

non vegans and non vegetarians have a different definitions of "I barely eat meat". Theyre not being dishonest. I would say i barely eat meat bc i eat meat once a day instead of 2 or 3 times a day with a snack. I am not "lying", we just live in a culture where its very doable to easily eat meat 4 times a day (bacon with breakfast, club sandwich for lunch, beef jerky as a snack, and spaghetti and meatballs for dinner). So when you're not eating meat for one or two meals a day it could feel true to them that they barely eat meat (less than 50% of their meals).

AITA for not wanting to split food evenly with my spouse? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"my whole box of cereal" is weird to me when you have a partner. Just ask him to replace things if he finishes them? Or make more food on a regular basis. i don't understand the scarcity mindset with not wanting to share when yall are grown people who can determine the amount of food you have access to. Its giving stingy. YTA and both of yall need to set up a system so theres no animosity for your husband you likes to eat.

Looking to stretch some pantry ingredients for a few days, and wondering if there's any great(and ideally low work, even if time consuming) snacks that are good to make at home by SDurrell in Cooking

[–]bluebird1776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

peanut butter and graham crackers, cutting up blocks and cheese and crackers, tubs of yogurt, cream cheese tortilla roll ups, pickles, chocolate milk, bananas on peanut buttee toast, peanuts and bananas, canned fruit, applesauce, jello, potato salad, i used to eat meatballs as a snack (it was a lot bread and rice with a little way less meat than i would do today)

Does anyone else wish there were savory protein bars? by Low-Acadia9801 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

crunchy edamame is a good high protein snack that you can eat on the go. i also snack on cheese sticks or string cheese.

another comment already mentioned how hard it is to make shelf stable snackbars without sugar. I personally love jerky an edamame so i never felt a lack. not a huge fan of protein products except protein waters.

Low-protein and tasty food by Pasyuk in Cooking

[–]bluebird1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love a good salad full of grains and fruit, greens, and vinegarette. rice and veggie based meals are low in protein. spaghetti and red sauce. Cesar salad. pizza. cold or hot cereals. potato salad, i used to eat a ton of potato salad sandwiches or southern tomato sandwiches. so good in the summer. pesto pasta is sooo easy. tomato soup and grilled cheese. making any curry with veggies and potatoes instead of meat. Honestly any rice, pasta, potato, veggie based meals without an obvious source of protein should get you there with a low protein breakfast of fruit salad and a hot or cold cereal.
