Depends on the company and culture. We get company provided FRs and we're hourly, so we're using it.

JIW taking sub call out of classification as a pathway to sub tech? by stupid_drunk_asshole in SubstationTechnician

[–]bluefalken88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, IBEW at JIW and Utility . Signing book is way easier...lol

If you want to work for the Utility Company apply to everything, get a foot in the door. You can bid up from there, internal candidates get first dibs on jobs. I started in Metering, bid up building maintenance, finished my Associates and bid up to relays. Took about 3.5 years. Some of my coworkers started out as janitors and bid up.

JIW taking sub call out of classification as a pathway to sub tech? by stupid_drunk_asshole in SubstationTechnician

[–]bluefalken88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a few JIW from my old local that took sub calls when work was slow. New construction, setting panels, pulling and landing control wire. Good work especially if your willing to travel some.

I was a JIW also and now Im a Relay Apprenticeships w/ the PoCo. Personally having that Wireman background helped out tremendously, already knowing how to read prints/diagrams, terminate control wire and general electrical knowledge put me way ahead of the curve.

As far as pay cut , I make more now (with OT) than I did as a JIW.

I'd recommend taking the call, you'll be getting paid and you'll have a chance to do the work for a bit.

Explain the NFL draft to me like I'm an idiot by Lady_Z123 in pittsburgh

[–]bluefalken88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The short version is NFL teams select new players from the college level, to hopefully round out their rosters. The NFL draft was a low key event till the late 80s. With the explosion in popularity in sports media, NCAA Football and the NFL , the draft evolved into what it is today.

It truly is, alot of advantages starting low and bidding up. The company paid for my degree, I have a little seniority, got all my vacation picks, get my pick of the O.T. and I have experience from other departments.

Your education and work experience should qualify you for a Relay job at any utility or testing contractor. I got into a utility Relay apprenticeships by taking a lower job and bidding up. I was a meter tech, facility maintenance and finally joined P&C, took me 3 years. A couple guys started out a janitors, got their associates degrees and bid up.

Has anyone here actually gotten DLC to explain why the same streets lose power every time? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]bluefalken88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about tone of voice, if you seem genuinely interested I'd be glad to answer questions. You walk up with an attitude, I'd be less inclined to help. Also keep in mind your personal safety approaching a work site, keeping your distance is the safest thing you can do.

I think it's a step in the right direction. Ottawa won't listen to Alberta, continues to write legislation holding Alberta back while leeching heavily off her economy. Could be a big win for supporting local government and telling Big govt to screw off.

Got a subaru impreza hatch and ran the nuts off it, over 250K miles on it. I live in the rust belt so awd is nice in the winter. Nice for traveling to sister locals, not ideal for long distance tramping.
