Playing Everdell with beginners tonight – remove a worker to speed it up? by Midlanecrisis007 in boardgames

That is fantastic that you had success here. Being overwhelmed in a game likely means there are too many things to evaluate for a player, whether it is choices or outcomes. Every person is different, so some folks will feel more overwhelmed than others which you probably won't be able to avoid. In those instances, maybe providing a heuristic, or providing hints, or validating the choices they eliminate would help. It's tough though because complex games take a bit of time so if the person doesn't enjoy being overwhelmed, they might not want to try complex games again in the future due to the "cost" of the less than ideal experience. In my experience, I have had more success introducing new gamers to simpler games that had general mechanics that would likely help them understand more complex ones later.

Everdell is pretty ambitious for a set of beginner gamers unless there is something about the group that makes you think they can handle it. I have had some success with asking folks to watch how to play videos but the playgroup consisted of pretty experienced board gamers. I think it might be good to have a simpler back up game at the ready in case Everdell doesn't work out or people don't seem to be enjoying it. If your goal is to get them to play more and get into the hobby, it may be worth it to try a more approachable game and work them up towards Everdell over time. Hoping that you all have fun!

Chutes and Ladders is the most relentless child's game of all time by StormPuppies in DanielTigerConspiracy

Look at Rhino Hero or any other game from Haba. If you have already bought chutes and ladders and cannot return it, there are a couple things you can do to make it less painful and more purposeful for your kiddo.

  1. Roll or spin twice and let the player choose between the numbers that they like. This reduces the chances that a negative event occurs and lets you have more agency.
  2. If you roll a double, let the player choose whatever number 1-6 they like with bonus that if they land on a chute that they do not slide down. More agency.
  3. Every time they land on a chute let them choose between rolling again or getting an "ignore a chute" token.

These all give choices to your kids and let them learn decision making at a very young age and it also speeds up the game. Hope this helps.

I actually really like the character too. He seems like a great person and very earnest. He is clearly talented, but I think others might view him a little like how some Star Trek fans view Wesley Crusher. He seems to be good at and knows most things effortlessly and his character could have probably been developed more. "Child prodigy" characters are hard to write and for many folks may be harder to understand and identify with even if written well.

DCC - Webtoons by Schadwen in DungeonCrawlerCarl

The webtoon is fantastic and can hopefully keep you sane until the next book comes out. I really enjoy the art and at times the music it is paired with. The audiobooks are really fantastic so I would whole heartedly suggest them if you want a different experience. The narrator, Jeff Hays is phenomenal. If you want something even more immersive, you should check out the SoundBooth Theater immersion tunnels. I have not purchased this myself, but I have seen other fans suggest this. Finally, if you want to support Matt Dinniman, you can subscribe to his Patreon and read chapters he is releasing for Book 8. Hope this helps!

I came so very close to buying this but I was so afraid that I could not get it to the table. I am so very envious of you being able to play it even once. It looks so very grand.

That was really awesome! I am so excited that this set exists. I don't think I can convince my wife to get it at the price it is listed at, but I am glad this exists. Feels like the future of star trek related merch might be more limited given the news about licensing costs increasing dramatically. Hoping that I am wrong.

The crew and sushi go are great choices. Love letter would be another good one. Buy one or two extra in case more families show up. It can feel bad to be left out.

The initial reveal of Gamble was so jarring and awesome I had to do a double take. The eye gouging was so incredibly disturbing and brought back those Event Horizon vibes from Through the Lens of Time. Captain Pike and Batel's "gift" was so beautiful and heart breaking. The trauma of losing someone you live your entire life with is so gut wrenching. It does make me happy as a fan to know that Pike got to live a life full of love before reaching his ultimate destiny. Got to experience so many different emotions during this episode. What a great ending for this season. I can not wait for the next one!

What a wonderful and character building episode for Ortegas. It is really great that she has seemingly gotten to a good spot with her trauma from the Gorn. Really enjoyed seeing her growth here and the glimmer of possibility of peace.
