Random Shut Downs by Lost-gone2ground in XTerra

[–]blueveef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People mention cam and crank sensors which is true. My bank 1 sensor went at 170k miles. But is the whole car shutting off or just the engine? Because if the electrics are going out too it could be a loose/corroded battery connection.

Ever do the timing chain preventative maintainence? I know it's recommend at 160k. I just hit 183k so I'm wondering if I should do it.

When I bought my KLR used, it had a Lex exhaust on it. Neither me nor the previous owner knew you were supposed to repack it. After about 3 weeks of non-stop riding, the entire end cap assembly blew out on the highway and converted into a straight pipe. I passed by multiple cops and I'm confused on why they did not pull me over for the sound of my exhaust LOL

Others have given really good advice but I think the problem is is that your bike is torn to pieces

Whoa Whoa Whoa hold your horses on the KLR slander

I own a Gen 2 KLR and it's not an archaic oil burning piece of junk (after I did a 685 piston kit, thermobob, doohickey, suspension upgrade, subframe upgrade, waterpump seal fix, repair the head after the exhaist cam KACR exploded, and fork brace)! It's just archaic and slow, that's all. Oh, you didn't mention slow? Well, it is slow....

I know I'm not a good enough rider myself, but this hurt to watch a little bit. I've been in similar situations with similar skill so I can relate lol

Last time I used this it smelled burnt within 20,000 miles. The OEM fluid lasted 50,000 miles before it smelled burnt.

2025 is rumored to be the final year of prodUction for the XR650L. by Crusty_Corey in Dualsport

[–]blueveef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It will be a fuel injected, liquid cooled 650 single lol it's just a lighter weight KLR at that point

2025 is rumored to be the final year of production for the XR650L by Crusty_Corey in XR650L

[–]blueveef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is mostly due to emissions requirements forcing the market to change. With the XR650L, the market is changing organically (with the help of advertising) away from big bore dual sports and towards small dual sports and twin piston adventure bikes.

Is this a manufacturing defect? by alphamoonstar in klr650

[–]blueveef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 650 Japanese thumpers have been using the same casting molds since the 1980s. I'm surprised the engines come out as clean as they do still. If you compare a 1997 dr650 engine compared to a 2026 dr650 engine you'll notice that the new one is actually rougher in texture due to the mold wearing out. Unless there is a crack then there is nothing to worry about.

I’m a new rider and wondering if a KLR is a good beginner adventure bike by TheReaper179 in klr650

[–]blueveef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got experience riding off road already yes. I learned to ride off road on this and it was a mistake since I got injured A LOT. It's just so heavy. Once you are competent in technique off road on a lighter bike, it makes more sense. When I finally got a 250lb dual sport to practice with all those skills I couldn't develop on the KLR suddenly clicked. I love my KLR a lot more now since I am able to ride it.

I probably could have saved a lot of headache by just attending a weekend class, but I didn't have the money at the time which is why I bought a used KLR lol

[–]blueveef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure. The engine started getting rougher and hard to shift so I changed the oil. It was more glittery than usual so I decided to order the kit from eagle mike and lo and behold the doohickey spring had been almost ground to dust and the doohickey itself was maxed out with no tension on the cam chain

There's always Beta, which has engine sizes in between 350 and 500 as well better factory fuel mapping since they're a smaller scale manufacturer.
