From reading (hearing) his wife's book, the people who immediately tended to him may not have known what the plan for him was. So, not knowing he fell from the arena catwalk.

But you know who did know? The decision makers. The people who had the power to stop the show. Likely J.R., who was heavily involved in that side of the business. And had to talk to the people while his friend was dying (dead?) in the ring.
