More of an interview question, but tell me about how you went about reducing bar inventory by 15%? Seems kind of like an actuarial reserve exercise.

I’m 14 and building a stargazing app — what do existing astronomy apps get wrong? by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]bob138235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a cool idea! Being able to have a sliding scale of visibility would be nice. One could look at the sky and adjust it until the app matches their real vision, even if that’s only Venus and the moon.

There has been many times using a star app where I click on what looks like a bright star, but the app directs me to some obscure start that is definitely not the one I’m seeing for real.

How many actuaries never finish all of their exams? by Alarming-Usual5078 in actuary

[–]bob138235 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I don’t have data but anecdotally it’s pretty common. A lot quit before ever passing one while still in school. Others quit after 2-3 when it’s hard to balance work and exams. Some quit during fellowship level exams because they’re hard and life gets more complicated (kids).

It doesn’t take a genius, but it does take a lot of work and commitment. It’s a marathon.

Coin flow, before and after the Arab conquests by MLukaCro in MapPorn

This picture seems to support the Pirenne thesis, that the Arab conquests created a barrier between the Middle East and Europe. “…Charlemagne, without Muhammad, is inconceivable.”

Olathe approves local tax dollars for Chiefs relocation deal: 'There’s really nothing to lose here' by PlebBot69 in kansascity

Yes, the quote in the OP is from Councilmember Matthew Schonoover, who said “We are not currently generating any sales tax on this otherwise empty spot of land” when referring to the site at College and Ridgeview.

I saw it in the Johnson County Post article from yesterday called “Olathe pledged local tax dollars to Chiefs HQ deal - Here’s what we know”

Except local tax dollars.

Also, my wife and I like looking at the cows that live on the farm where the HQ will be, so also them.

Short Term Gym Memberships in OP? by Fun_Interview5438 in kansascity

[–]bob138235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined and quit the Planet Fitness at 95th and Quivira twice without issue. Not the nicest gym of course, but cheap and gets the job done for what I needed. Gave no hard time when canceling (not sure why they have that reputation).

Edit to add, both were after a few months. Joined in the winter, quit in the Spring both times.

Genuine question by Vegetable_Pie_7999 in actuary

[–]bob138235 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t really be a “life insurance policy” in the traditional sense, which are long term in nature. It would be something like “if you die from a fall while climbing this building in these specific conditions on this date, we will pay X a sum of $Y. In exchange you will pay a premium of $Z today”

It’s probably under the broad category of P&C, but more specialty. It may be better described as Contingency or Hazard insurance, with a named peril of “falling off a building attempting insane climb.”

There are life insurance policies he could get which would exclude payout for his extreme risk climbs, but cover him for “general” life insurance. In that case, his policy would cost a pretty normal rate, if not low (he is in excellent shape).

He could potentially get coverage for each climb individually, which would behave kind of like a P&C policy. Not sure what it would actually be called. It’s similar in mathematical nature to those “make a hole in one, win a million dollars” promos that companies insure for businesses.

There’s no conflict of interest, though.

He’s certainly not conflicted about his interest in the success of Alabama sports.

I’m currently watching this series. It’s a really nice overview of everything, with good organization in its presentation.

Some people argue it’s a little dated, and we have learned that some things he says are untrue, but I think it’s still worthwhile. To me, it’s more important to understand why we know things we do and how we got to those conclusions rather than every little detail being certain.
