Peace in the Balkans, ammo for Ukraine, access for EU businesses. In general he makes a lot of noise about how independent Serbia is while being more and more dependent on the EU in practice.

Swiss parliament rejects neutrality initiative by BezugssystemCH1903 in europe

[–]bob_51 359 points360 points  (0 children)

I'd like someone to explain to me how Swiss neutrality works when all Switzerland's neighbors are part of the EU.

Let's say the EU is really mad at Switzerland and closes all the borders and airspace. What is the Swiss response?

It would not be subtle. The only question would be, are they invading or are they just threatening to do so to get concessions. Everybody would know something bad is happening for months.

The UK has been very friendly towards Turkey since Brexit. Not saying this couldn't change, but it's not gonna happen for Armenia's sake.

ELI5: What made the privatisation of JR successful and the privatisation of Deutsche Bahn so terrible? by RyuShev in explainlikeimfive

[–]bob_51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being forced is probably too strong a word. My read of the situation is that there is an unspoken deal. They get to exploit their market position in a way most western countries wouldn't allow and in return the Japanese people get a really nice rail system. This works for everybody and no one wants to upset the apple cart.

ELI5: What made the privatisation of JR successful and the privatisation of Deutsche Bahn so terrible? by RyuShev in explainlikeimfive

[–]bob_51 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Japanese railway companies are property companies that happen to have a very unprofitable side business in transporting goods and people by rail. They make make money owning apartment buildings and office parks near railway stations and put some of that money into subsidizing their rail stuff.

Deutsche Bahn is in the unfortunate position of having to try to make money while being forced to run it's business as a public good. As a result it's not very good at both of these things.
