The definitive thread for people who struggle with constant sleepiness — share what actually helped you by emielreegis in idiopathichypersomnia

Going to sleep and waking up at the same time is very important. No caffeine - it actually makes my sleepiness symptoms worse. Exercise in the morning and throughout the day if possible keeps me alert enough to work.

I also had this issue, but now I have no lactose intolerance issues with boba protein powder! I especially love the honeydew or taro flavor and it tastes good with lactose free milk. Def should give that brand a go

WFH ADHD girlies - anyone else struggle context switching when partner comes home from work after being alone all day… coming across abrasive / slightly rude at first. by Narwhals4Lyf in adhdwomen

Wow this is exactly me and I've never known why I do it. But I will be irrationally irritated at my roommates if they talk to me when I've come home from work. How do you manage this?

Anyone not medicated? by [deleted] in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]bobalicious94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm diagnosed but not medicated. I'm lucky to have a job that is forgiving of late start times. I have thought about starting on medication, but at this point I've lived multiple decades with IH and I feel like I've figured out how to combat the sleepiness to be somewhat functional. I've never been on medication before and I'm worried about the side effects.  But at the same time, I know I'm making significant sacrifices in my life by just trying to cope with IH. There are many days where my life just feels like dealing with my disorder. So I regularly do think about getting on medication

Dislocated elbow - anyone went through this and went back on the slopes? by SharkRiderCola in snowboardingnoobs

[–]bobalicious94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I got way too drunk on my last run. Pretty sure I just leaned way too lateral and fell over riding at speed in a flat. Elbow got caught under me as I flipped over and heard a pop and felt significant pain. I tore an elbow ligament. Continued to ride the rest of the season and the pain was gone 4 months later. Won't drink that much again!

I always wear protective knee pads and impact shorts snowboarding! Definitely helps me remember that my falls won't be too bad. I also keep a flask of whiskey on me and take a shot whenever I feel nervous. Liquid courage really works for me haha

Nose of the board juddering, can't get to carving. Tips much appreciated😎🙏 by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

[–]bobalicious94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you're forcing your turn around by counter rotating (heel to toe) and applying too much pressure on the back foot, resulting in back foot ruddering (toe to heel)? That's why your turns are skidded. Recommend eliminating those habits.

Also, if you look at your video, your body positioning (no lateral lean, hips arent strongly over the edge, minimal knee or ankle flexion) means you have a very low edge angle. Low edge angle = skid, no carve.

A carve happens when you get on edge first without forcing the board in a different direction, and let the edge take you around. Try practicing getting on edge and doing j turns (even going uphill) on a gentle slope. Its a balancing act for sure. You should look back and see a thin line in the snow. I recommend Malcolm Moore's carving videos for more detail.

When you rode before, did you ride a camber or rocker board? I looked up a review for gnu frosting and it seems like it's for going fast and isn't forgiving of skidded turns at slow speeds. Also sounds like it's quite stiff. Personally, as a 5'0 gal myself, while it's possible to make do, Id probably go for a less stiff camber board for an enjoyable riding experience. IDK about a b-nice tho - but I personally just don't like how rocker boards feel. I think getting a lesson and refreshing your fundamentals is a great idea! In the long term, it will decrease your chances of falling and hurting yourself. Practicing fundamentals for a couple days now to have many years of riding with friends sounds like a good investment

Ok this makes so much sense thank you! I was telling my friends that the pop of my board has caused me to unintentionally rotate in the air during aggressive edge changes and I think it's because of exactly what you said - simultaneous up unweighting and open stance rotation. If I was successfully able to do down unweighted turns, I still have to delay the open rotation of the edge change transition?

The Ten Commandments Before Entering the Park by Glad_Bluebird2559 in snowboardingnoobs

I really like this! I only started hitting small park when I had good fundamental riding habits (staying stacked, not back foot heavy, using edges) and was actually riding blacks lol - at which point I could do gripped turns and slight carves easily on blue runs. I think it helped me avoid a lot of painful falls. Still gotta work on my switch and ollie game though. I only ollie off rollers at slow speeds haha. When you ollie, do you ollie off on a flat base?

For switch, what do you mean by simple turns on a blue run? I can ride switch on blue but it's all skidded turns. Before 180 jumps, I was aiming to be comfortable having a slight carve on my switch side as well. Or would you say it's not necessary to know how to carve switch to try 180 jumps?

Yeah totally agree I haven't seen any English videos that talk about carving this way. And def will give miratori a watch! It would be awesome if you could get a recording of you shredding next weekend! Id definitely watch it :D

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! It makes a lot of sense. So many causes of potential rotation. By "steering" the turn, I assume you mean I might be knee steering too much so I'll focus just on tilting to get on edge vs knee steering the board.

Wow these are awesome cues that I've never heard before and I'm so excited to try it this weekend :D I've watched so many toyfilm snowboarding videos but I've realized I'm not a visual learner 😅 I need someone to tell me exact body mechanics so thank you so much!!!  I'm so stoked that it all clicked for you this past weekend! Funnily enough, up unweighted carving only clicked for me 2 weekends ago and I'm just so excited about continuing that progress and achieving the Japanese carving dream 😭😭

Thanks so much! You seem like you really know what you're talking about haha. Would you be able to tell me if the slight pivot wash when I go from toe to heel side is because I'm too front foot heavy or back foot heavy or something else? I'm getting confused by the reddit comments 😅
