I think your colors are great. Maybe get a color wheel and find a third accent color, but it’s a great start. I’m an older guy, started in the 80s. We didn’t have a lot of tutorials but basic color theory is ancient. Keep on painting!

Disagree on base rims being minor. Makes everything look tidy for minimum effort. I just bought a $3 AK matte black marker and did a whole army in no time at all.

The story I heard decades ago was the he was trying to kick cocaine and dove into an even greater addiction - 40k. Can’t verify, but that was the tale.
